Atletico title hopes evaporate in Liga draw with Espanyol - World

Al-Ahram Weekly29-03-2025

Atletico Madrid's slim Spanish title hopes faded further with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Espanyol on Saturday in La Liga.
Javi Puado earned the Catalan side a point with a penalty after Cesar Azpilicueta put the visitors ahead, leaving the Rojiblancos six points behind league leaders Barcelona despite having played an extra match.
Barcelona host Girona on Sunday in a Catalan derby, while Real Madrid, second and three points ahead of Atletico, welcome Leganes later Saturday.
"Two points escaped, two important ones, I don't know why this is happening to us," Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak told Movistar.
"If we don't have consistency we can't fight for the title.
"We don't have it, we're losing points and I think the teams behind us are catching up."
After Barca beat Atletico 4-2 in their previous top flight outing, before the international break, Diego Simeone's side knew they could not afford to lose further ground in the title race.
Simeone put Julian Alvarez and Rodrigo de Paul on the bench after they featured in midweek for Argentina against Brazil in South American World Cup qualifying.
Uruguay international Jose Gimenez also began on the bench but he was needed to replace Robin Le Normand midway through the first half after a clash of heads.
Espanyol, battling relegation and provisionally 15th, fought gamely against an Atletico side that played within themselves.
Marcos Llorente had a goal disallowed early on for offside but Atletico failed to create further chances until Azpilicueta blasted the visitors ahead from distance.
It was his first goal for three years and also his first for Atletico Madrid, but it was worth the wait as he hit a sumptuous volley into the top corner after Antoine Griezmann's cross was cleared to the edge of the box.
Conor Gallagher came close before the break and Alexander Sorloth dragged a shot wide of the post as Atletico sought a second.
Espanyol had created little danger but found a way back level when Clement Lenglet blatantly pulled Leandro Cabrera's shirt in the box.
Puado rammed the resulting penalty into the top corner past Oblak's outstretched arm after 71 minutes.
Alvarez, on from the bench, hit the sidenetting as the clock ran down on Atletico's ambitions, with Joan Garcia saving from a Griezmann header at the death.
Eliminated from the Champions League by rivals Real Madrid, Simeone's side's last realistic hope of silverware is in the Copa del Rey, where they face Barcelona in the semi-final second leg on Wednesday.
Espanyol are now two points above the relegation zone.
"It's a good point against a side fighting for the title... we got a tricky point, a good one, and we're doing well," said goalscorer Puado.

Tennis: Wimbledon champion Krejcikova suffers shock Queen's exit - Omni sports

Barbora Krejcikova's preparations for her Wimbledon title defence suffered a major setback as the Czech crashed to a shock defeat against Rebecca Sramkova at Queen's Club on Tuesday. Krejcikova beat Italy's Jasmine Paolini in three sets in last year's Wimbledon final to win her second Grand Slam crown. But the 29-year-old's hopes of repeating that memorable triumph were rocked by her 6-4, 6-3 loss to Slovakia's Sramkova in the opening round of the Wimbledon warm-up event in London. The defeat extended a disappointing run for Krejcikova since her victory at the All England Club. She lost in the second round of the recent French Open and missed January's Australian Open with a back injury that kept her sidelined until May. Krejcikova, the world number 17, was also beaten in the US Open second round in the last Grand Slam of 2024. World number 41 Sramkova will face former US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the second round at Queen's. Raducanu, who famously won in New York as an 18-year-old qualifier in 2021, made a vibrant start to her grass-court singles season, routing Spain's Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-2 on Tuesday. The British star revealed before Queen's that she is still troubled by back spasms that have plagued her for much of a frustrating 2025 campaign. But Raducanu looked in fine fettle as she brushed aside Bucsa to the delight of the British fans in the Andy Murray Arena. "I must say I was quite locked in today," the world number 37 said. "I'm very pleased with my performance. "I was a little bit nervous at the beginning. It's my first time playing on this court at Queen's and the support is incredible. "I just want to stay here playing as many matches as I possibly can." In the first women's action at Queen's since 1973 -- the tournament has been solely an ATP men's event for 52 years -- Raducanu was joined in the second round by two of her compatriots. Katie Boulter won 7-6 (7/4), 1-6, 6-4 against Australian qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic. Heather Watson beat world number 27 Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 6-3 to book a clash with former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. I don't like that because he's with the Spanish national team! He added: "When he goes to Ibiza, or wherever he wants, he can do it. But not with the Spanish national team at a press conference. I don't like it." On Thursday, Yamal arrived at the press conference after Spain's victory over France in the semi-final of the tournament with his cap backwards.
