Proteas 'overwhelmed' by welcome from fans, says captain Bavuma
Returning home to a rapturous welcome from fans on Wednesday, captain Temba Bavuma said the magnitude of the Proteas team's achievement in London last week had only really sunk in when he and his squad entered the arrivals hall at OR Tambo International.
Bavuma admitted the Proteas were taken aback by the thousands of people who turned up at the airport to welcome the team home after they won the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's four days earlier.

The victory ensured they ended a 27-year trophy drought for the national cricket side, who last won a championship final at the 1998 Champions Trophy tournament.

Police deployed to protect Gift of the Givers workers from water mafia in Eastern Cape
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has condemned threats made against humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers while they were providing assistance to flood-affected communities in Mthatha, Eastern Cape.
The incident prompted both national and local government to denounce the criminal opportunism targeting disaster relief efforts.

Sars strikes: MaMkhize's luxury cars up for auction
A total of 13 cars and a tour bus linked to the controversial businesswoman Shauwn 'MaMkhize' Mkhize are set to be auctioned online next week.
Bids for the 14 vehicles are welcome from 27 June to 2 July 2025.
Among the luxury cars is a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S680 Maybach Edition 100, one of only 100 made worldwide. Picture: Bidders Choicer website.
Some of the cars set to be auctioned, including the tour bus, still have Royal AM Football Club's branding on the sides. The soccer club, formerly known as Bloemfontein Celtics, was bought by Mkhize in 2021 and moved to KwaZulu-Natal.

Sundowns off to winning start at Club World Cup
Mamelodi Sundowns beat Ulsan HD 1-0 in their opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup at the Inter & Co Stadium on Tuesday.
Iqraam Rayners scored the only goal of the match in what was an entertaining game between the two teams.

Rayners also had a goal disallowed due to offside against the Korean Republic outfit. The game was delayed by over an hour due to adverse weather conditions in Orlando, Florida.

Kyalami closer to hosting F1, but government 'not playing its part'
South Africa is one step closer to hosting a Formula One Grand Prix. But Kyalami Grand Prix circuit owner Toby Venter has put a damper on celebrations, citing a lack of commitment from government.
Venter announced on Wednesday that the FIA has approved the proposed upgrades Kyalami requires to host a Formula One race for the first time since 1993 and has been granted a three-year window to comply. He is confident the upgrades, for which the circuit will foot the bill – estimated to be between R90- and R180-million – and set to take three months, can be completed before the end of the year.

But Venter stopped short of predicting a date for F1's big return, saying that 'government needs to engage with Formula One to make it happen like they do all over the world'. This, according to the Kyalami boss, is something that is required in addition to the Bid Steering Committee set up by Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie, which must consider bids for the F1 race.

It was a sporting weekend to forget if you're South African. With the Proteas, Springboks and Dricus du Plessis all flying the SA flag on the biggest stage, it ended in a trio of losses. First, it was the Proteas men's cricket team which went down to hosts Australia in the final T20 International of their three-match series on Saturday morning SA time. While the Proteas posted a decent, but not particularly imposing, 172 in their innings, they were unable to dismiss the talented Glenn Maxwell as he made a scintillating 62 from 36 as he led his side to victory in the last over. Prodigy Dewald Brevis was again the star for the Proteas with the bat, with a scorching 53 from 26 before he was out, but aside from him, the rest of the SA batsmen struggled on what looked like a different pitch on which 'Baby AB' looked a class above. With Mitchell Marsh (54) and Travis Head (19) laying a good platform, the Proteas then reduced Australia to 122/6. Despite a masterful bowling display by Corbin Bosch (3/26) as he reeled off a number of perfect yorkers, the Proteas were unable to stop a rampant Maxwell. It was then the turn of the Springboks to thump the Wallabies at Ellis Park in the Rugby Championship, or so we thought. Though Australia had not won at the hallowed SA rugby venue since 1963, a second-half display for the ages allowed the visitors to record an incredible piece of history. In fact, the Boks had led 22-0 after 19 minutes, but from that point the Wallabies worked their way back into the match to finally emerge deserved 38-22 victors.

Maharaj wants to use ODIs to press case for inclusion in T20s
Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has no intention of ending his T20 International career right now and still wants to break into the Proteas squad for next year's T20 World Cup. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner was not part of the Proteas squad that lost a three-match series to Australia on Saturday. Head coach Shukri Conrad appears to want spinners who can also bat or, in the case of leg-spinner Nqaba Peter, offer some mystery. 'Shuks hasn't closed the door,' said Maharaj, who is part of the ODI squad that will start a three-match series against Australia in Cairns on Tuesday. 'The T20 World Cup is still a huge one for me. Hopefully I can get the opportunity to show what I can do. He obviously has a plan and hopefully I filter into those plans, but if not, well you have to back the coach's call at the end of the day,' Maharaj added. George Linde and Senuran Muthusamy both played as all-rounders in the T20 series, though neither were influential. Maharaj was a key part of the South African squad that finished as runners-up at the last T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, but while his bowling remains reliable, his batting isn't. Conrad explained that the balance of the Proteas' starting side meant the front-line spinner needed to be an all-rounder. South Africa picked six specialist batters, with Linde, Muthusamy and Corbin Bosch, pencilled in as all-rounders, but between them they scored just 12 runs in a combined six innings in the series. Conrad conceded that South Africa were short one batter against Australia, which affected how the top order played. 'If I can nudge a batting unit to play in a certain way when we are a batter light, imagine what they can do when we have a properly balanced side,' Conrad said after the T20 series. 'It's all part of the longer term plan. I don't think I am crazy about (trying) to find all-rounders in T20. The top 6 will be best batters, 7 and 8 are all-rounders.' '2027 is big target for me, I love playing ODI cricket,' he said. With the T20 World Cup on the horizon and South Africa's defence of its World Test Championship crown starting later this year, the ODI format is not the main priority at this stage. '(This series) is more an opportunity to try combinations, so that by next year I'd assume you have a clearer understanding of the 2027 landscape as far as the squad is concerned.' Maharaj, skipper Temba Bavuma, top order batters Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi along with all-rounder Wiaan Mulder are all part of the ODI squad. After Tuesday's first match, the series moves to Mackay, also on the Queensland coast, for matches two and three on Friday and Sunday.
