Swati man arrested for Umlazi mass murder

A 28-year-old foreign national has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of six men who were gunned down at an informal settlement in Umlazi's V/6 Section on 17 August 2024.
His arrest follows extensive investigations by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Murder and Robbery Unit detectives.
Melusi Dlamini, an Eswatini national, was arrested in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, on Friday, 4 July 2025.
Dlamini faces six counts of murder along with charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Night of Umlazi mass murder
The deadly incident unfolded when six men were socialising and consuming alcohol with three women at the informal settlement.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the evening took a tragic turn when two unknown men approached the group claiming they wanted to purchase cigarettes.
The attackers had initially been turned away when they were told that no one was selling cigarettes, but their return proved fatal for the six victims.
'The two men left, only to return moments later and instructed the three women to lie down as they fired shots [at] the male victims.
'Six men were shot and declared dead at the scene,' Netshiunda explained.

Umlazi mass murder revenge motive uncovered
Investigations revealed that the mass shooting was motivated by revenge, stemming from earlier conflicts within the community.
Netshiunda indicated that the killings were revenge-motivated, with the deceased victims having allegedly been involved in altercations with Eswatini nationals residing in the same area.
The six men who lost their lives were all Xhosa-speaking, and their deaths appeared to be the culmination of tensions between different ethnic groups within the settlement.

Court proceedings and ongoing investigation
Dlamini made his first appearance at the Umlazi Magistrate's Court on Monday, 7 July 2025.
During court proceedings, he chose to abandon his bail application.
His case has been remanded to 14 August 2025 for further proceedings.
'Investigations are underway in search of the second suspect,' Netshiunda confirmed.

Image: Supplied Two men who were arrested by the SAPS' KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team in connection with the murder of DA Councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu appeared in Howick Magistrate's Court yesterday. Their arrests came just two days after the unit arrested a former Municipal Manager in connection with the killing of the former ANC Youth League Secretary General, Sindiso Magaqa. One of the suspects arrested in the Ndlovu matter was Amanxamalala Traditional Authority's Inkosi Simphiwe Zuma, who is related to the former and current Umkhonto WeSizwe party President Jacob Zuma. Zuma was arrested alongside Thabo Mathonsi-Chonco. Both Zuma and Mathonsi-Chonco were out on bail for a separate murder case. Although the latest charges against Inkosi Zuma remain unclear, Mathonsi-Chonco was accused of conspiracy to commit murder and the murder of Ndlovu on December 23, 2023. His lawyer, Nkomo, who refused to divulge his first name, stated that his client wished to be transferred to Pietermaritzburg due to ill health and that the city fell within the jurisdiction of the Howick court. However, Prosecutor Advocate Elvis Gcweka rejected the request, citing concerns that the accused might collude with Buthelezi, who was being held in Pietermaritzburg. Magistrate Ntini rejected Mathonsi-Chonco's request, stating, 'As the State has its fears, I don't see the problem in keeping the accused at Westville. Four arrested for Maphumulo double murder
Police acted fast to arrest four men in connection with a double murder and house robbery that took place in the Maqumbi area of Maphumulo on Tuesday. According to Maphumulo Saps, the men, aged between 23 and 30, entered a homestead in the Mzulwini area where they allegedly shot and killed a 33-year-old man and his 32-year-old girlfriend. They also made off with cash and a cell phone belonging to one of the victims. Police were able to quickly trace the men to three different locations and arrested them the next day on Wednesday, July 30. The first two, aged 25 and 30, were found at a local tavern. One of them had an unlicensed shotgun with the serial number removed. The next, aged 27, was later discovered with an unlicensed 9mm pistol and the stolen cell phone and cash. The fourth suspect, a 23-year-old man, was arrested at his home. All four men face two counts of murder and one count of house robbery. The 30-year-old and 27-year-old suspects will face additional charges for possession of unlicensed firearms. They are expected to appear in the Maphumulo Magistrate's Court on Friday. 22 killed in Angola fuel hike unrest
Two days of unrest and looting in Angola during a protest against a fuel price hike claimed the lives of 22 people, the government said Wednesday, as a tense calm returned to the capital. Violence erupted on Monday, the first day of a strike called by taxi drivers to protest the July 1 increase in fuel costs in the oil-rich nation where millions live in poverty. It was some of the worst unrest in several years in the Portuguese-speaking southern African country, which has been governed by the MPLA party since 1975. Sporadic gunfire was heard across Luanda and several other cities on Monday and Tuesday as people looted shops and clashed with police. "We regret 22 deaths, including one police officer," Interior Minister Manuel Homem told reporters on the sidelines of a Council of Ministers meeting chaired by President Joao Lourenco. Nearly 200 people were injured in the violence, he said, and more than 1,200 people had been arrested. The unrest was marked by massive looting in which people raided supermarkets and warehouses, making off with food and other supplies. Sixty-six shops were damaged, Homem said. The streets of Luanda were tense and largely empty Wednesday, although there were some queues outside petrol stations and shops, AFP reporters said. There was a heavy presence of security forces. Many shops remained closed, but public transport had slowly resumed in some areas after a two-day standstill. With the protests having spread outside the capital, a statement after the ministers' meeting said vandalism and rioting had "triggered a climate of widespread insecurity". It said "elements with criminal intentions" had turned the demonstration into a "threat to security". Police in the southern city of Lubango confirmed separately that a police officer had shot and killed a 16-year-old on Tuesday. The teenager was part of a group attempting to invade the headquarters of the ruling MPLA party, a statement said. - Series of protests - The strike was the latest in a series of protests this month after the price of fuel was hiked from 300 to 400 kwanzas ($0.33 to $0.43) a litre on July 1. The government's move to lower its heavy fuel subsidies reportedly followed International Monetary Fund calls for more public money for health and education. But it has angered many in the country of 36 million people, already under pressure from inflation of around 20 percent while nearly 30 percent are unemployed. High inflation and limited growth "are likely to keep poverty rates high, around 36 percent by 2026, underscoring the need for a stronger social safety net and more development spending", according to the World Bank. At a demonstration of around 2,000 people in Luanda on Saturday, protesters condemned the fuel price hike but also brandished signs denouncing MPLA "corruption" or discontent with the rule of Lourenco, who was re-elected for a second five-year term in 2022. There had been similar protests the two previous weekends. In a joint statement Wednesday, the opposition UNITA and Bloco Democratico parties said Angola was in a "severe economic and social crisis" that was a result of government policies "disconnected from the country's reality". Amnesty International and other rights groups have accused the police of using excessive force against protesters in Angola, which suffered through a 1975-2002 civil war and almost four decades of repression under former president Jose Eduardo dos Santos. In January 2021 police killed at least 10 people after opening fire on an anti-poverty protest in the diamond mining town of Cafunfo, around 750 kilometres (470 miles) east of Luanda, according to Amnesty.
