Wisconsin legend included in ESPN's list of top edge rushers entering 2025 NFL season
Watt, who became the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history on July 17, landed at No. 2 on the list behind Cleveland Browns superstar and future Hall of Fame inductee Myles Garrett. Dallas Cowboys All-Pro Micah Parsons (No. 3), Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby (No. 4), San Francisco 49ers stronghold Nick Bosa (No. 5), Cincinnati Bengals sack machine Trey Hendrickson (No. 6), Detroit Lions rising star Aidan Hutchinson (No. 7), Houston Texans edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. (No. 8) and Danielle Hunter (No. 9) and Los Angeles Ram Jared Verse (No. 10) rounded out the list.
As one of the most dominant defensive players in Pittsburgh Steelers history, Watt's position on the ranking is close to irrefutable. As a 30-year-old in 2024, the former Badger tallied 61 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks, 27 quarterback hits, a league-best six forced fumbles and four pass deflections in 17 games for Mike Tomlin's squad.
With eight full seasons on his professional resume, Watt has led the league in sacks three times (2020, 2021, 2023), been named to four First-Team All-Pro squads (2019-21, 2023) and reeled in one Defensive Player of the Year Award (2021). Since he entered the NFL, the Pewaukee, Wisconsin, native has accumulated 108 career sacks, 126 tackles for loss, 33 forced fumbles and 225 quarterback hits.
Here's what ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, backed by a survey of dozens of NFL league executives, coaches and scouts, had to say about Watt's place in the hierarchy:
"Watt is a worthy rival to Garrett in the AFC North. His 108 career sacks rank third all-time for a player's first eight seasons, behind Reggie White (124) and DeMarcus Ware (111). He's a near-lock for an All-Pro team every year. And he leads the NFL in forced fumbles (10) over the past two seasons, along with being second in sacks (30.5) and quarterback hits (63)... 'He's still the gold standard for me," a veteran AFC defensive coach said. "He completely wrecks a game and he can do everything.'"
At No. 31 on the NFL's official sack list, Watt could climb to as high as No. 20 next season. That journey begins with a showdown against the New York Jets on Sunday, Sept. 7, at MetLife Stadium.

COOPERSTOWN, NY (AP) — For CC Sabathia, getting elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame was much easier than actually getting to the Hall of Fame. Sabathia, whose career spanned 19 seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees, was voted in on his first year of eligibility. Getting to Cooperstown for Hall of Fame weekend activities to be capped by his induction Sunday proved a tad more difficult. 'It was an adventure,' Sabathia said Saturday. Sabathia, wife Amber and their four children left their Alpine, New Jersey, home at about 4 p.m. Thursday. They traveled in two vehicles as is their family custom and were about 75 miles (120 kilometers) into their 177-mile trip when things got interesting. 'We stopped to get food. Everything's going great,' Sabathia said. 'We tried to get on the on-ramp on (Route) 17 and the car just stopped. I was behind her (Amber). Most of the time when we're driving, I'm gone. I'm never driving behind her, but for some reason I was taking my time riding behind her.' Sabathia had a clear view of what was happening. They called for assistance. The family piled into Sabathia's car and returned home to grab another vehicle as a tow truck towed their broken-down Escalade back to Alpine. The Sabathias arrived in Cooperstown at about midnight. What should have been a drive of about three hours became an eight-hour journey. 'It was pretty funny. I was taking pictures. My kids were doing TikToks and Amber was in the back like the super serious person she is getting everything done,' Sabathia said. 'People were honking at us and recognizing us on the side of the road. It was fun for us. 'For her it was a nightmare.' UFL's New International Player Showcase Aims to Attract European Athletes
The United Football League is going international, announcing that it will host a player showcase in Switzerland in October in an effort to attract European athletes ready and motivated to compete next season. The showcase offers international players the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in front of UFL officials, coaches and personnel directors, per the UFL's official website, and they'll be evaluated based on their performance to be included in the UFL player pool and for potential free agent opportunities with UFL teams for upcoming seasons. "We are the league of opportunity, and we're expanding that opportunity overseas," said Doug Whaley, the senior vice president of player personnel for the UFL. The UFL will also put on seven showcase events in the United States from September to December in Atlanta, Washington D.C., Dallas, San Diego, Orlando, Phoenix, Houston and Los Angeles. The Zurich showcase will be held on October 5, in between the second (D.C. on September 28) and third (Dallas on October 12) U.S. showcases. Those new locations are expected to be Florida, Kentucky, Boise and Columbus, according to Sports Illustrated. "We've heard the rumors … and have been assured by the league that no final decisions have been made about numerous teams for next season, including the Stallions," Randall Woodfin, the mayor of Birmingham, said this week. The four XFL Conference teams (Arlington Renegades, DC Defenders, San Antonio Brahmas and St. Louis Battlehawks) aren't rumored to be affected by the potential changes. Building more fan interest in local markets — a stated goal by the league entering this season — remains a work in progress as the UFL heads into a third season. "We are looking at every way to reengage and look at our marketplace in each separate silo as we move forward," Russ Brandon, CEO and president of the UFL, previously said. "We're a great product. … We're trying to activate as much as possible in each of these local markets, and we have a great plan in place, I believe, to do that." The UFL wrapped its second season last month, with Jordan Ta'amu and the Defenders taking down Offensive Player of the Year and regular-season MVP Bryce Perkins and the Panthers in the 2025 UFL Championship Game, 58-34. Season tickets for the 2026 season are already on sale. The 2026 UFL schedule — which will feature a 10-week regular season followed by a two-week postseason, including the 2026 title game — will be announced at a later date.
