KUALA LUMPUR: EPL legends John Terry, Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov are in town to get Malaysians to play a new type of football — the seven-a-side game.
Terry, Giggs and Berbatov feel that the 7x7 game suits them perfectly, especially at this stage of their careers.
The trio are playing in the inaugural Zurich Liga 7x7 All Stars, which kicks off at KLFA Stadium today.
"It's a great concept. We're doing something very similar back home," said former Chelsea captain Terry.
"I was speaking to Adam Azman (Liga X CEO) about organising it here. It's a format that works in England, so hopefully this is the start of something we can return to annually."
Terry, who will captain Team Bangsa Bola under Tan Sri Nazir Razak, said the smaller pitch for the seven-a-side game makes it ideal for players who may no longer have the legs they once had.
"The pitch is compact, which is great for us older players. We're looking forward to it," said Terry.
"I think this style of football is exciting. The game has evolved over the last decade, it's slower now than it was during our time, but this format brings a new kind of energy."
Terry also highlighted the format's appeal to younger, digital-savvy audiences. "It blends the worlds of football and entertainment. You have ex-pros, influencers, streamers, and the following is huge," he said.
"Mixing former footballers with social media personalities works. It reaches a wider crowd."
Giggs, who was also in KL two months ago to promote the Manchester United-Asean All-Stars match, said modern audiences are drawn to short, sharp formats.
"We're in an age now where everyone wants things quickly. Look at cricket in 2020, shorter formats are more popular, and other sports are following suit," added the Manchester United icon.
Giggs will turn out for Team Wizards, managed by former sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin. "Khairy's very persuasive," Giggs said with a grin.
"But honestly, we love going abroad and connecting with fans. Myself, Terry, Berbatov, we're always up for it."
Berbatov, who will represent Team Zurich under Zurich Malaysia country head Junior Cho, said this form of football has long been part of his roots.
"Back home in Bulgaria, this type of football has always been popular. Even as a little boy, I played five-a-side, six-a-side, seven-a-side, I still do today," said the former Manchester United and Tottenham striker.
"It's a great format. It forces you to be more technical, especially in tight spaces. It's a great way to sharpen your skills."
Tan Sri Tony Fernandes leads the fourth team who will feature Malaysia's very own Safee Sali in the 7x7 showcase.

Azizulhasni Awang named Volkswagen Malaysia's first brand ambassador

PUCHONG: National track cyclist Datuk Azizulhasni Awang has been unveiled as the first brand ambassador for Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM). The announcement was made during a press conference at Volkswagen Puchong (PHS Autohaus Sdn Bhd). VPCM managing director Renate Noessler highlighted Azizulhasni's sporting excellence and personal values as key reasons for the partnership. 'Azizul's story is one of ambition, agility and drive. Much like our cars, he represents performance that is purposeful and enduring,' she said. Noessler emphasised that the collaboration goes beyond a typical endorsement, focusing on shared principles such as discipline and resilience. 'This partnership is about building a relationship that connects with Malaysians who value integrity, confidence and long-term reliability,' she added. Known as the 'Pocket Rocketman', Azizulhasni expressed gratitude for the role, calling it both an honour and a responsibility. 'This is more than just a collaboration between an athlete and a brand. It is a meeting of shared values, performance, precision and living up to one's true potential,' he said. The Olympic medallist drew parallels between his cycling career and Volkswagen's design philosophy, citing models like the Touareg as embodying strength and sophistication. 'Success doesn't happen by chance. It is built through discipline, consistency and the courage to push boundaries. These are the values I have lived by, and I see them clearly in the Volkswagen brand,' he said. Azizulhasni hopes the partnership will inspire Malaysians, particularly the youth, to pursue their ambitions with determination. 'This isn't just about me and the cars. It is about encouraging Malaysians to dream bigger and to see their journey as more than just a destination,' he added. Volkswagen confirmed that Azizulhasni will feature in upcoming campaigns as part of efforts to strengthen its brand presence in Malaysia. - Bernama

Setback to duo's bid for top 4 seeding at World Championships

KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Sze Fei–Nur Izzuddin Rumsani's bid to arrive at next month's World Championships in Paris as a top-four seeded pair suffered a dent following the latest world rankings update today. The Malaysians slipped two rungs to world No. 3 in men's doubles, with South Korea's Kim Won Ho–Seo Seung Jae taking over the top spot after denying them a successful title defence at the Japan Open last week. Compatriots Aaron Chia–Soh Wooi Yik remained unmoved at No. 2 despite also falling early in Tokyo. The pressure is now squarely on Sze Fei–Izzuddin to bounce back at this week's China Open in Changzhou — their final tournament before the seedings are finalised for the World Championships, based on the Aug 8 ranking. Anything short of a deep run could see them tumbling out of the top four, a scenario that would severely compromise their title aspirations in Paris. A seeding outside the top four could pit them against the tournament favourites as early as the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, other Malaysian men's doubles pairs also saw positive movements. Ong Yew Sin–Teo Ee Yi, last week's surprise semi-finalists in Tokyo, climbed two spots to No. 28, while quarter-finalists Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub–Tan Wee Kiong inched up one place to No. 25. Man Wei Chong–Tee Kai Wun continue to be Malaysia's third-highest ranked pair at No. 7, followed by Wan Arif Junaidi–Yap Roy King at No. 24. In women's doubles, world No. 3 Pearly Tan–M. Thinaah maintained their position despite finishing runners-up in Tokyo. The in-form duo are now within striking distance of soon-to-part ways No. 2 Chiharu Shida–Nami Matsuyama of Japan, and will have another opportunity to push higher at the China Open. Go Pei Kee–Teoh Mei Xing are the next best ranked Malaysians at No. 22. In the men's singles, Leong Jun Hao dropped two more rungs to No. 26 after a first-round exit in Tokyo, while Lee Zii Jia continued his downward slide due to inactivity, falling from No. 27 to No. 33 in the real-time rankings. Zii Jia, however, holds a protected ranking of No. 9 — activated in late March — which allows him entry into World Tour events during his comeback period. There were no changes in the mixed doubles standings for Malaysia. Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei continue to lead the charge at No. 4, followed by Goh Soon Huat–Shevon Lai Jemie (No. 6) and Hoo Pang Ron–Cheng Su Yin (No. 13), keeping Malaysia well-represented with three pairs inside the world's top 15.
