‘Counted out 38 shell casings': Resident of 2 Mass. cities concerned about gunfire in unlikely place
'I was looking out my window and I thought it was a pack of firecrackers going off,' he said. 'But who would do fireworks in February?'
The witness tells Boston 25 News that while he was too far away to identify anyone, he saw one person on foot, fleeing, and a car. The car stopped, he said, and the shooting began.
The witness called 9-1-1.
Police arrived in minutes. And the witness said he helped officers count the number of bullet casings. And the final number was shocking.
'We ended up counting out 38 shell casings,' he said. That's crazy.'
Perhaps crazier, the fact those dozens of bullets fired apparently hit no one.
'We don't have anything on anybody being sent to the hospital,' the witness said, 'But time will tell.'
Clarendon Hill Towers is located in Somerville, where Broadway drains into Alewife Brook Parkway. It's close to Tufts University and residents tell Boston 25 News it has not been, in their experience, a place for gunshots of any kind.
'A lot of people were shocked,' said Abdul Ahmed, another Clarendon Hill Towers resident. 'There are kids here, there's a school here, there's a veteran's shelter here. It doesn't happen here. It's a very quiet neighborhood.'
But the Somerville shooting was preceded ten hours earlier by a similar incident in Cambridge -- again, in an area not known for violent crime.
Cambridge Police said they found evidence of multiple gunshots at the corner of School Street and Bishop Allen Drive -- those shots were fired around 2:15 on Monday afternoon. Again, no one was injured.
It's unknown whether the incidents are connected.
Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne said, in a statement, that the incident is deeply concerning and that she's relieved no one was hurt. She said the Somerville Police Department continues to investigate the shooting.
'Whether or not that investigation ultimately links this to gang activity, we take all incidents of gun violence extremely seriously,' the mayor said.

Bear caught behind counter at Tahoe ice cream shop
Customers weren't the only ones craving sweets in South Lake Tahoe last weekend. Deputies responding to an early morning call on Sunday discovered a large black bear behind the counter of the Ice Cream Shop at Camp Richardson — apparently drawn to the strawberry ice cream. 'The deputies could barely believe their eyes,' the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday. The bear eventually left with little damage, but the encounter highlights a growing concern in the region: Tahoe's bears are becoming bolder. Wildlife officials say black bears are increasingly entering homes, cars and businesses in search of food. Last month, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife euthanized a 400-pound bear known as No. 717 after years of break-ins and aggressive behavior. Another bear, nicknamed Hope, is currently under watch following a series of soft entries in the Tahoe Keys. Officials estimate there are about 500 black bears in the Tahoe Basin and as many as 71,000 statewide. Encounters can be startling, but experts stress that attacks are extremely rare. Authorities urge residents and visitors to secure trash, lock doors and windows, and never leave food in cars. If you encounter a bear, back away slowly, make noise, and if approached, stand your ground and appear larger. Rehoboth man charged with assaulting pregnant woman who is now missing: What to know
A 22-year-old Rehoboth man has been arrested on charges that he assaulted a missing pregnant 18-year-old woman the day before she disappeared. Gregory Groom has been charged with aggravated assault and battery on a pregnant person, domestic assault and battery and intimidation of a witness for acts committed against 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro on Wednesday, Aug. 6, according to a written statement from the Bristol County District Attorney's Office on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Monteiro was last seen on Aug. 7, according to a post by the Rehoboth Police Department. Groom is currently being held without bail and will be arraigned on Wednesday morning, Aug. 20, in Taunton District Court. Bristol County State Police Detective Unit members and the Rehoboth Police Department are attempting to locate Monteiro, according to the Aug. 11 Facebook post by Rehoboth Police. Monteiro was last seen in the area of County Street in Rehoboth on Aug. 7, according to the post. She is approximately 6-feet tall with light brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a red t-shirt with "get over it" printed on the front, ripped jeans and tan boots and she may have been carrying a white bag with her belongings. The post asks anyone with information regarding her whereabouts or with surveillance video of County Street to contact Trooper Sabrina Hinchey at 508-972-1041 or Rehoboth Police Det. According to WCVB, police have searched a wooded area in Rehoboth, which is where Monteiro was last seen and near where her boyfriend lives. WCVB crews saw police carrying evidence bags while searching for Monteiro, WCVB is reporting. "I'm scared, I'm really scared," Monteiro's sister, Faith Monteiro, told WCVB. "I don't know if they have her, but some part of me feels like they do." The investigation remains ongoing by Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, Massachusetts State Police and Rehoboth Police, the DA's office said.
