There is something very special about 21-year-old Theodore Barnes from Delft who is representing South Africa at the Special Olympics in Namibia for athletics.
He is self-trained and his own coach, under the watchful eye of his devoted family who helped him train for months.
Barnes is currently one of 12 Team SA athletes who are competing in the Region Five Games, Special Olympics category, and flew join the games last week.
The games feature athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Barnes is no stranger to the competitive track.
In 2022, while a learner at Be-EL School in Kuils River, he was selected to be part of the Special Olympics held in Limpopo and returned with gold.
What makes Barnes even more special is that he does not let his Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) stand in his way.
Speaking with his sister, Zudith Parish, she said their family was thrilled that he was selected.

'We are very proud of him and my mother, Marjorie, when she heard that he has been selected, she jumped into the air,' she said.

'For two years he coached rugby and played club rugby in Delft for six years.
'Theodore never ran for a club but for his school.
'He has been training himself using videos on YouTube.
"We will go with him to the sports field and we will time him.
'He does not have a coach and is seeking a club.'

Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC, Ricardo Mackenzie, wished Barnes well.
'He is a true example of what can be achieved through hard work, commitment and belief. Sport has the power to bring hope and joy to our communities and he is spreading that hope to others. He is a true role model for other athletes and we will be cheering him on as he competes at this competition."
During an interview with Team SA media, Barnes said he always dreamed of being on television and told of how competitive athletics started at school.

Red Bull Shay' iMoto static car revs up Durban

RED Bull Shay' iMoto is revving up the hype and excitement ahead of their much-anticipated KZN debut at Suncoast Casino on Sunday, August 10, when the smell of burning rubber will overpower the salt-tinged air of Durban's Golden Mile. The event organisers have announced the 16 drivers that will go head-to-head in the spinning competition. However, before they can get into gear for the competition, the Red Bull Shay' iMoto static car has been doing the rounds in Durban, making all the right noises. The car was a hit in Phoenix, drawing the attention of fans and car enthusiast alike. The static car will also make a stop in Umlazi on Saturday, August 2, at Fresh Stop Mega City and Max's Lifestyle. The event organisers said that this was the perfect way to announce the arrival of the spinning elite who will gather at Suncoast to claim their place in motorsport folklore. 'Durban has always been different. It's where the spinning scene carries its own distinct flavour, influenced by the city's multicultural energy, its proximity to the ocean, and its reputation as the playground of KwaZulu-Natal,' said the organisers. Also Read: Tyre-screeching treat for Durbanites at Red Bull Drift event Among the confirmed line-up are returning champions carrying the weight of expectation, hungry newcomers with nothing to lose, and local heroes finally getting their home ground advantage. 'The Durban crowd will witness battles that extend beyond the track. Old rivalries will reignite under the coastal sun, while new ones are born in the heat of competition. Indeed, the move to Durban represents more than a change of venue, it's a homecoming for a sport that has always belonged to the people,' said the organisers. They added, 'Each driver brings their own story to the tarmac. Some learnt to spin in the shadow of mine dumps, others perfected their craft along beachfront promenades. Some are third-generation spinners, carrying family legacies in their DNA. Others are newcomers who discovered their calling in the smoke and thunder of previous Red Bull Shay' iMoto events.' The list of top 16 drivers includes Boksie, Jabu, Magesh Junior, Makgasa Fire, Robin Fortuin, Sadz – Flyboxin, Skopas / Bad Company, Team 2xspicy JZ, Team Kayla, Team Nevs, Team Osizweni, Team VQ25, Vaaitjie, Ziko and Lockdiff. Tickets are available via Computicket for what promises to be a defining moment in SA motorsport.
