State govt projects RM42.48b revenue for Visit Johor Year 2026

Malay Mail21-05-2025
ISKANDAR PUTERI, May 21 — The Johor state government is targeting RM42.48 billion in tourism revenue in conjunction with the upcoming Visit Johor Year 2026, said Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
He said the figure was calculated based on an average per capita tourist expenditure of RM3,500.
Onn Hafiz expressed optimism that the target could be achieved if 12 million domestic and international tourists visit the state.
'To make the celebration a success, various tourism upgrade projects have been undertaken, with an allocation of RM116.35 million for this year and last year,' he said during a question-and-answer session at the Johor state legislative assembly in Kota Iskandar today.
Onn Hafiz, who is also the Machap assemblyman, was responding to a question from Norlizah Noh (BN-Johor Lama) regarding the state government's preparations for Visit Johor Year 2026.
The upgrade projects in Johor include the second phase of Johor Zoo, upgrades to Gunung Ledang, Tanjung Piai National Park, Royal Botanical Gardens, Abu Bakar Royal Museum, Sultan Abu Bakar Heritage Complex, and the Heroes Museum.
He said the success of Visit Johor Year 2026 would also bring benefits to Johoreans.
'Although these upgrades are to welcome international tourists, locals will benefit as ticket prices for them are cheaper than those for foreign visitors.
'For example, at Johor Zoo, the ticket price for foreign tourists is RM30, while locals pay RM10. The various upgrades will also boost the downstream economy involving the local community.
'We are also planning to organise several international-class events, including the Johor Bangsa Carnival, International Museum Day, and the Johor Global Symposium.
'Sports-themed events such as the Iron Man programme, the Viper Challenge, triathlon, and Dragon Boat Regatta are also planned.
'The involvement of popular sports icons like Sonny Bill Williams and Datuk Lee Chong Wei will help ensure the success of these programmes,' said Onn Hafiz.
The menteri besar also addressed criticism from some quarters claiming there was nothing interesting in Johor.
'In fact, there are many activities here besides shopping malls and food and beverage offerings,' he said, adding that Johor has yet to realise its true potential.

This was Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik's sixth appearance in the final of a World Tour Super 1000 tournament. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik let slip a golden opportunity to win their first World Tour Super 1000 title after losing to a scratch Indonesian pair at the China Open men's doubles final. The world No 2 pair's hopes of hitting a career high were dashed by the unranked giant-killers Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri, losing 15-21, 14-21 in just 34 minutes. The Indonesians played aggressively, giving Aaron-Wooi Yik little chance to come back after taking huge leads. Aaron-Wooi Yik took home US$70,000 (RM295,146) as runners-up while the champions won US$148,000 (RM624,000). This was Aaron-Wooi Yik's sixth appearance in the final of a World Tour Super 1000 tournament. Today's result marks a huge win for the Indonesian duo, capturing a Super 1000 title despite the China Open being just their second international tournament after being paired up. Aaron-Wooi Yik were gunning for a fourth title this year, having won the Thailand Open, Singapore Open and Badminton Asia Championships. The two-time Olympic bronze medalists can however take heart as this was their 13th World Tour final appearance in their badminton career, of which they have won four.

Kelantan end long wait for National Sevens title

KUALA LUMPUR: East Coast giants Kelantan edged defending champions Johor to claim the National Sevens Championships men's open title in Kuala Terengganu today (July 27). Despite having lost a number of their key players due to injuries during the earlier rounds, Kelantan held their nerve to edge Johor 17-12 in the final at the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium. Kelantan had earlier in the day beaten hosts Terengganu 26-5 in the semi-finals while Johor downed Selangor 19-12 to advance to the decider. Kelantan team manager Aliff Haiqal Rosli said it was a meaningful victory for them. "Alhamdulillah we managed to regroup after losing a number of our key players and managed to secure the win," said Aliff. "Johor are the defending champions and are a formidable side. We knew we had to be at our best to have a chance of winning. Our goal was to play a fast game. "If I am not mistaken, we last won the National Sevens in 2018 so it means a lot for us to become champions again. Obviously we are very happy." The men's under-21 final saw Johor beating Selangor 15-10. The women's open final saw Selangor defending their title with a 29-0 win over Terengganu. Selangor also defeated Terengganu 29-0 in the women's under-21 final.
