
Indians taking charge of financial journeys through digital content & creators, shows study
MUMBAI: Even as traditional channels have long guided financial decisions, a new wave is gaining momentum – Indians are increasingly taking charge of their financial journeys through digital content, communities, and creators.
Financial advice is no longer confined to expert columns or in-branch consultations – it's happening on Reels, in WhatsApp groups, and through Instagram creators demystifying jargon in under 60 seconds, showed a study commissioned by Meta and conducted by IPSOS.
The study shows that 6 out of 8 touchpoints in the purchase journey of financial products are now digital, with 50 per cent of these digital touchpoints attributed to Meta platforms.
Additionally, more than 50 per cent of financial services consumers view personal finance and investing content on Meta platforms.
The study also shows that 81 per cent of consumers use Meta platforms during the discovery phase of financial products. The influence doesn't just stop there – it continues through evaluation (79 per cent) and remains strong at the final purchase stage (83 per cent). For products like loans (86 per cent), investments (84 per cent), insurance (78 per cent), and savings (82 per cent), our apps play a definitive role throughout the decision-making funnel.
A significant 75 per cent trust financial podcasts, while 67 per cent look to influencers and subject matter experts for guidance.
More than 2000 respondents aged 25-45 across Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Kolkata were surveyed for the study.
'Financial planning is integral to the lives of most Indians across income groups. But this process is rapidly evolving, fueled by digital. Whether it's the growing role of Meta platforms in the purchase journey, the increasing influence of Reels and creators, the rising role of business messaging or the growing number of women who are taking independent financial decisions – the study dispels many myths about how financial products are discovered and bought today, offering valuable insights for marketers and brands in the industry,' said Shweta Bajpai, director financial services, Media, travel, real estate & services (India) at Meta.

US warns Europe on China tariffs, hints at higher India duties over Russian oil
The US has warned European nations to be ready to support steep tariffs on Chinese goods and signaled that India could face higher duties over its purchases of Russian oil, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. Speaking to Bloomberg TV, Bessent urged Europe to 'get on board' with tougher trade measures, saying he was disappointed by the tepid response when he floated the idea at a Group of Seven (G-7) meeting earlier this year. Bessent said sanctions on Russia 'can go up' or 'can be loosened' depending on the outcome of a meeting scheduled for Friday between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. 'The Europeans need to join us in these sanctions. They need to,' he said. 'It's put up or shut up time. We put secondary tariffs on the Indians for buying Russian oil. And I could see if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up.' Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the US, European nations, Japan and other allies have imposed multiple rounds of sanctions. The European Union adopted its 18th package in July, which included restrictions on Russian energy. Bessent's remarks appeared to refer to Trump's use of so-called secondary tariffs targeting purchases of Russian energy. Trump has imposed a 25 per cent tariff on goods from India, due to take effect later this month, over New Delhi's Russian oil imports , in addition to a 25 per cent base tariff, effectively doubling the rate to 50 per cent. At the G-7 meeting in Canada, Bessent recalled asking fellow leaders: 'Is everyone at this table willing to put a 200 per cent secondary tariff on China?' He said the question was met with silence: 'Everybody wanted to see what kind of shoes they were wearing.' Bessent added that Trump 'will make it clear to President Putin that all options are on the table' during their upcoming meeting.

Indian Startup Founder Shares "Hiring Horror" Story: "We Got Completely Duped"
Arshia Kaur, founder of beauty brand Tint Cosmetics, recently took to Instagram to share what she called a "hiring horror" story. In a series of videos, Ms Kaur opened up about the many challenges of running a startup, and shared a shocking hiring experience that left her short on time, money and trust. She revealed that her company hired a person for the Head of Marketing position who looked "amazing" on paper, but failed to deliver on every task assigned to him. "He looked amazing on paper... everything seemed extremely legit," Ms Kaur said. But within three weeks, the new employee struggled to communicate with the team or management, failed to deliver on assigned tasks, and offloaded work onto other employees. Ms Kaur said that the new hire was eventually fired, and it was later that they realised that the person had faked his entire CV and generated fake salary slips to land the job. All the growth he had done for his previous company and everything looked extremely legit because we actually saw the backend," Ms Kaur said in the clip. However, when he started failing at his tasks, the employee was fired - just two and a half months after he had joined. Ms Kaur then wondered why the person wasn't able to deliver. She started rechecking his documents. "We went through his salary slips, letters of recommendations, etc, and found out that the person scammed the company with fake salary slips," she revealed. "It was all fake. We got completely duped," Ms Kaur said, showing screenshots in her Instagram post. "Honestly, as founders, this was such a huge wake-up call, and it's so important to do your due diligence and make sure that if something seems fishy, you need to ask questions early," she said towards the end of another video on the same scam. "When you're bootstrapped, every single penny matters; it's shed-earned money. You cannot pay people whatever they ask for - founders, please don't do this. It's your right to have the correct information about anyone you've decided to hire!" she advised.
