Braves lose third baseman Austin Riley to IL for 2nd time in 2 months with abdominal strain
Riley suffered the injury while tagging out Cincinnati's Elly De La Cruz near home plate in the Braves' 4-2 win on Sunday in the rain-delayed MLB Speedway Classic at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Riley also landed on the IL on July 12 with a strained abdomen. He returned on July 25.
The Braves recalled infielders Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Jonathan Ornelas from Triple-A Gwinnett before opening a home series against Milwaukee on Monday night. The team optioned outfielder Jarred Kelenic to Gwinnett following Sunday's game.
Riley is hitting .260 with 16 homers and 54 RBI.

Speedway Classic home run car activated twice at Bristol Motor Speedway
Saturday and Sunday marked a day of firsts for MLB. The Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds played in the first Speedway Classic — the first game to take place inside a race track — at Bristol Motor Speedway. The game was suspended due to rain and resumed Sunday. Braves outfielder Eli White activated the game's home run car in the fifth inning when he crushed a three-run homer to left field. When he did, a Chevrolet Corvette zoomed around the track with a home run flag hanging out the window. You can watch it here. The car was activated a second time thanks to White when he homered for the second time. 'It's super special for me,' White told FOX sports after the game. 'It's just a great experience being here and just trying to soak it all in. And to be able to have a big day and come through the team is something I'll cherish for a long time.' The Braves went on to win, 4-2. Red Sox reactions: Roman Anthony delivers first career walkoff RBI
BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 2-1 walkoff win in 10 innings against the Astros at Fenway Park on Friday: 1) Ceddanne Rafaela's swinging bunt put runners at the corners with no outs in the 10th inning. Star rookie Roman Anthony then delivered a walkoff RBI single over center fielder Taylor Trammell's head. It came off Astros left-handed reliever Bennett Sousa. It was his first career walkoff RBI. 'It's amazing. It's fun. I want to do it again already,' Anthony said. Trevor Story added, 'You can't say enough how poised he is. The moment is never too big for him. He's just so calm in there. It's like he's been there for 10 years. So it's awesome to see. He's gonna be doing that for a long time.' 2) The Red Sox played the infield in with the automatic extra-inning runner at third base and one out in the top of the 10th inning. Mauricio Dubón grounded to shortstop Trevor Story who fired home to cut down Chas McCormick at the plate and keep the game tied 1-1. Reliever Greg Weissert pitched a scoreless 10th, getting Jeremy Peña to fly out to left field for the final out. 3) The Red Sox improved to 60-51. They are 35-21 at Fenway Park. 4) Righty Cooper Criswell posted a 3.49 ERA in 18 starts last season. But Boston has had him far down on its starting depth chart this season; he entered Friday having thrown just 10 ⅔ innings in the majors in 2025. Criswell showed the Red Sox what they have been missing out on while keeping him at Triple-A Worcester where he has posted a 3.32 ERA in 14 outings (13 starts). The 29-year-old allowed just one run, seven hits and two walks while striking out four in 7 innings against the Astros. 5) The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Christian Walker's 389-foot home run to left-center field. It was the lone run Criswell allowed. Walker connected on a changeup low in the zone. 6) The Red Sox tied it 1-1 in the seventh inning. Trevor Story drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Masataka Yoshida reached when he got hit by a pitch. Carlos Narváez's sac bunt put Story at third and Yoshida at second with one out. Wilyer Abreu followed with a game-tying RBI sac fly to left field. 7) Jarren Duran made a nice leaping catch up against the center field wall on Carlos Correa's 383-foot fly ball in the fourth inning. 8) Astros starter Hunter Brown tossed 7 innings and allowed one run, four hits and one walk while striking out six. 9) Trevor Story doubled off the Green Monster against Astros closer Josh Hader with one out in the ninth. Pinch hitter Rob Refsnyder walked to put two men on base. With two outs, Wilyer Abreu hit two balls just barely foul down the right field line before he struck out swinging to send the game into extra innings. 10) The Red Sox and Astros will play the second game of their two-game series Saturday at 4:10 p.m. Righty Walker Buehler (6-6, 5.72 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Boston opposite lefty Colton Gordon (4-3, 4.74 ERA). Rain-shortened MLB Speedway Classic tops Saturday sports ratings
The 2025 MLB Speedway Classic was the most-watched sporting event on Saturday, despite being rain-shortened. FOX's rain-delay coverage of the game out-performed all competitive prime-time telecasts that night with 1.78 million viewers, FOX Sports said Tuesday. Game-play coverage from 9:42-10:32 PM ET on Saturday peaked at 2.4 million viewers. A record crowd of 91,032 for a regular-season Major League Baseball game got to see all the hype leading up to the event at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee, before rain washed out the game in the bottom of the first inning. The complete MLB Speedway Classic on FOX averaged 1,601,000 viewers over Saturday and Sunday. Atlanta beat Cincinnati 4-2 when play resumed on Sunday.
