Elon Musk is suing New York over hate speech disclosure demands from X

Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) has taken New York state to court, challenging the constitutionality of a recent law that compels social media platforms to report how they tackle hate speech and other harmful content. Filed in a Manhattan federal court on Tuesday, the lawsuit disputes the Stop Hiding Hate Act, which was approved in December, according to a report by Reuters. The law requires companies like X to submit biannual reports covering definitions and statistics related to hate speech, extremism, disinformation, harassment, and foreign political interference. Failure to comply could reportedly result in penalties of up to US $15,000 per violation each day.advertisementX, however, argues that this requirement infringes on its First Amendment rights by forcing it to reveal "highly sensitive and controversial speech" and compelling editorial decisions about what should be released – a responsibility X says belongs to the private, not public, domain. The company also cites a similar California law that it successfully blocked last year under free speech considerations, according to the Reuters report.In its court filing, X reportedly states that defining what content is acceptable online 'engenders considerable debate among reasonable people about where to draw the correct proverbial line. They also firmly rejected any attempt by Musk to frame the law as unconstitutional, expressing confidence the court will uphold it.X, however, is arguing that New York lawmakers have taken inspiration from California's disclosure law, parts of which a federal appeals court blocked last September over free speech concerns. X and California reached a settlement in February that exempted the platform from that state's requirements. By highlighting this legal precedent, X signals its expectations of a similar outcome in New York.Since Elon Musk acquired X in 2022, the platform has significantly loosened its moderation policing, dismantling its Trust and Safety board and restoring previously banned accounts. A report by The Associated Press also claims that academic observers and advocacy groups have noted a rise in hate speech and extremism on the site since Musk's acquisition of the platform. Gaza's civil defence agency said 30 people were killed by Israeli fire in the Palestinian territory on Wednesday, including 11 who were seeking aid. The war sparked by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel has ravaged the Gaza Strip, with severe shortages of food, fuel and clean water. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 11 people were killed and more than 100 wounded "after the occupation forces opened fire and launched several shells... at thousands of citizens" who had gathered to queue for food in central Gaza. The army told AFP it was looking into the incident reported by the civil defence agency. In early March, Israel imposed a total aid blockade on Gaza amid deadlock in truce negotiations, only partially easing restrictions in late May. Since then, chaotic scenes and a string of deadly shootings have occurred near areas where Palestinians have gathered in hope of receiving aid. The civil defence agency said another 19 people were killed in three Israeli strikes on Wednesday, which it said targeted houses and a tent for displaced people. Israeli restrictions on media in the Gaza Strip and difficulties in accessing some areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defence agency. The UN humanitarian office OCHA said on Monday that its partners "continue to warn of the risk of famine in Gaza, amid catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity". The civil defence agency reported that at least 53 people were killed on Tuesday, as they gathered near an aid centre in the southern city of Khan Yunis hoping to receive flour. The Israeli military told AFP regarding one of Wednesday's attacks that its troops were "operating to dismantle Hamas military capabilities". It said it was "looking into" the other reported attacks. After Israel eased its blockade, the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) began distributing aid in late May, but its operations have been marred by chaotic scenes and dozens of deaths. In a statement on Tuesday, the organisation said that "to date, not a single incident has occurred at or in the surrounding vicinity of GHF sites nor has an incident occurred during our operating hours". UN agencies and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the foundation over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. The Hamas attack which triggered the war resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to Israeli official figures. The Gaza health ministry said on Wednesday that 5,334 people have been killed since Israel resumed major operations in the territory on March 18, ending a two-month truce. The overall death toll in Gaza since the war broke out has reached 55,637 people, according to the health ministry.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (local time) publicly rejected the assessment of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard regarding Iran's nuclear program. Speaking to reporters while returning from the G7 summit in Canada, Trump contradicted Gabbard's testimony to Congress that Iran is not currently pursuing nuclear weapons. Instead, he sided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has consistently claimed that Iran is inching closer to nuclear capability, justifying Israel's airstrikes on Iranian positions. When asked how close Iran was to developing a nuclear bomb, Trump responded, 'Very close.' Reporters also pointed out Gabbard's earlier statement to Congress in March this year, where she said US intelligence agencies believed Iran had not restarted its nuclear weapons program. To this, Trump replied, 'I don't care what she said. I think they were very close to having one.' Intelligence agencies differ on Iran threat Meanwhile, Director Gabbard's position remains unchanged, according to a Reuters report. Her office maintains that US intelligence believes Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has not given orders to restart a nuclear weapons program. Iran, for its part, continues to deny any intent to develop nuclear arms. It insists that its uranium enrichment activities are for peaceful, civilian use. According to Gabbard's briefing to Congress, even if Iran decided to restart its weapons program today, it would still need up to three years to develop a nuclear warhead capable of targeting other nations. On the other hand, Netanyahu, who has long warned about Iran's nuclear ambitions, welcomed Trump's stance. He has argued that pre-emptive Israeli action is necessary to prevent Iran from reaching weapons-grade nuclear capability.

Just as the IT Act had to evolve to accommodate emerging technologies – information markets now demand a regulatory framework that distinguishes skill-based prediction markets from gambling. The current ambiguity is not just stifling innovation but also pushing users toward unregulated offshore platforms, where there are no consumer protections, no safeguards against fraud, and no accountability. The irony is palpable—India's thriving information markets sector, which contributes significantly to GST revenues and employs thousands, is being held back by the same regulatory hesitation that once plagued other breakthrough industries. Globally, the race to dominate prediction markets is already heating up. In the US, platforms like Kalshi have gained regulatory approval to offer event contracts, while Robinhood's integration of crowd-sourced sentiment tools demonstrates how mainstream prediction markets are becoming. Perhaps the most telling development is the ground-breaking partnership between Polymarket and X (formerly Twitter), which embeds real-time prediction trading within social media—a glimpse into how Internet 3.0 will blur the lines between information, social interaction, and financial participation. This is not just about gaming; it's about who controls the infrastructure of collective intelligence in the next decade. The investor interest in this space speaks volumes. Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia India), an early backer of US-based Kalshi, has also placed its confidence on Probo—a telling endorsement of India's potential in this sector. This parallel investment strategy by one of the world's most astute venture firms underscores a critical insight: prediction markets are not a western novelty but a global opportunity, and India, with its vast digital population and analytical culture, is uniquely positioned to dominate. The sector has already attracted over $500 million in funding, with marquee investors recognising its potential to create a new asset class at the intersection of gaming, finance, and data analytics. India has the chance to build Made-in-India prediction tech for the world—leveraging its strengths in scalable digital infrastructure, a deep talent pool, and a culture that thrives on analytical engagement (as seen with fantasy sports' success). Unlike the West, where prediction markets are still niche, India's 50 million+ strong user base proves this model can achieve mass adoption. The 2023 amendments to online gaming rules provide a foundation, but implementation must accelerate. Without it, we face a fractured market—where state-level bans push activity into grey zones, startups struggle with investor uncertainty, and India misses its chance to set global standards. India cannot afford to be a bystander. With 50 million users, information market is no longer a niche activity—it's a burgeoning economic force. The 2023 amendments to the intermediary guidelines for online gaming were a step in the right direction, but implementation remains sluggish. Without decisive action, India risks ceding this space to foreign platforms or, worse, underground markets. The choice is clear: regulate with foresight, as was done with UPI and fintech, or repeat the mistakes of the past, where delayed policies stifled growth. The future of information markets isn't just about games—it's about who will harness the wisdom of crowds to shape the next era of the internet.
