Sabah hits record RM84.3bil economic output in 2024
Sabah Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said Sabah's economy posted RM77.8 billion in 2020, rising to RM78.7 billion in 2021 and RM82.1 billion in 2022.
"In 2023, Sabah's economic output reached RM83.2 billion, before climbing further to RM84.3 billion this year," he said in response to a question by Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin (GRS–Nabawan) during the question-and-answer session at the Sabah State Legislative Assembly today.
Abdul Ghani had queried the state government's achievements in economic growth, human capital development, and public wellbeing under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 development plan, introduced in 2021.
Nizam said Sabah's total trade value surpassed RM100 billion in 2022, recording RM118 billion — a significant increase from RM87.2 billion the previous year.
He said that Malaysia's Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin had acknowledged Sabah's strong trade performance, with the state posting RM107.8 billion in trade for 2024.
"This marks the third consecutive year that Sabah's trade has exceeded the RM100 billion threshold," said Nizam.
He added that the state had generated a total of RM26.22 billion in revenue between 2021 and 2024.
"The rise in revenue can be attributed in part to the Commercial Collaboration Agreement (CCA) between the state government and Petronas, based on the principles of Greater Say, Greater Participation, and Greater Revenue," he said.
On the progress of SMJ 1.0, Nizam said that the development plan had achieved an overall implementation rate of 94 per cent as of May this year.
"Of the 467 initiatives under SMJ 1.0, 94 per cent have been implemented, with 366 initiatives fully completed," he said, citing figures from the SMJ Secretariat.
In terms of industrial growth, Nizam said the state secured 52 realised investments worth RM17.42 billion between 2021 and 2024. An additional RM10.9 billion in investments was approved in the first quarter of this year.
From 2021 to 2024, Sabah recorded RM35.38 billion in project-based investments — comprising RM20.61 billion in domestic investments and RM14.77 billion in foreign investments.
He also highlighted progress in addressing the state's water supply issues, with treated water production increasing from 1,505 Million Litres per Day (MLD) in 2021 to 1,630 MLD in 2024.
The number of water treatment plants also rose, from 85 plants in 2021 and 2022, to 88 in 2023 and 90 last year.
"This reflects the state government's ongoing commitment to improving water supply infrastructure. Various capacity and quality upgrade projects are also underway," he added.

UK's semiconductor design giant Arm may train 10,000 Malaysian engineers over a decade
SUBANG JAYA: A total of 10,000 local engineers are expected to be trained over the next decade under a landmark initiative by UK-based semiconductor design giant Arm and Advanced Semiconductor Academy of Malaysia (ASEM). The Arm On-Demand training programme is aimed at building Malaysia's high-tech talent pipeline and accelerating its position in the global semiconductor industry. It is designed to equip Malaysian engineers with advanced skills in semiconductor design and development, particularly in front-end integrated circuit (IC) design. The initiative aligns with the country's broader ambition to transition from traditional assembly roles towards innovation-led activities such as chip design, intellectual property (IP) creation and advanced R&D. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the programme aims to create a new generation of future-ready professionals who can design chips, build companies, and compete on the world stage. "This is more than just training, it's about creating future-ready professionals who can design chips, build companies, and compete globally," Amirudin said at the launch here today. The programme targets 1,000 participants annually, with the first batch of 400 engineers already enrolled and each course typically spans three to four months and features intensive, industry-relevant modules. Amirudin said Selangor is working with 20 universities including Monash University Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) through their respective engineering faculties. The event was also attended by key figures including Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong, Selangor exco for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han and Monash University Malaysia president and pro vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman. Industry players including Arm and MyStorage are also involved with graduates from earlier pilot cohorts have already received multiple job offers, with companies actively selecting top-performing candidates for employment. To ensure the programme's sustainability and impact, the Selangor state government has committed between RM5 million and RM10 million annually to support front-end semiconductor development. Meanwhile, the government - through the Economy MInistry - has increased its support from RM60 million to RM100 million, signalling strong national-level confidence in the initiative with total investments projected to exceed RM100 million over the next decade. Amirudin believes that the broader goal is to move Malaysia and Selangor in particular up the semiconductor value chain, shifting from traditional roles in assembly and packaging toward becoming a hub for chip design, IP creation and advanced R&D. "We must move towards owning the intellectual property so that these chips are not just labelled 'Assembled in Selangor', but 'Designed in Selangor', 'Made in Malaysia'," said Amirudin. He added that as global protectionism rises and old economic models break down, Malaysia must position itself as a creator not just a manufacturer of technology. "We can no longer afford to be a bit-part player in an industry that will shape the world economy for the next 30 years." Amirudin also said the ambitions will be detailed in Selangor Plan 2, set to be launched next year. He expressed confidence that semiconductor and E&E engineering will be prioritised under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan, to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 31.

No bull: Trader loses RM100,000 to fake ‘Datuk' promising lucrative cattle rearing investment
JOHOR BARU: A honey product trader lost more than RM100,000 after being lured into investing in a cattle-rearing project in Thailand by a businessman with a 'Datuk' title. Mazli Hamzah, 37, said he first met the businessman in 2024 and exchanged contact numbers with him for business networking purposes. 'In March this year, he called me saying he wanted to meet as he was interested in helping grow my business, including marketing my product overseas. 'We met frequently after that, but in July, he told me about a business opportunity involving investment in a cattle-rearing farm in Thailand, where the cows were meant for Hari Raya Aidiladha,' he said during a press conference at a shopping mall here on Monday (July 28). Mazli added that he was initially sceptical about the offer, but the man, who is in his 40s, later brought him to meet a Tabung Haji officer at Menara Tabung Haji in the city centre. He claimed that both men mostly discussed the cattle-rearing project, which convinced him that it was a legitimate business opportunity. 'Earlier this month, I handed the businessman more than RM100,000. Soon after that, he kept asking me for more money, which made me suspect that he just wanted my money. 'Everything was done verbally, with no black-and-white agreement between us. However, he did provide me with a receipt after I gave him the money to invest,' he said. Mazli added that he continued calling the businessman for updates on the investment, but his calls and WhatsApp messages went unanswered. 'I then went to his restaurant in Bandar Dato Onn and saw him sitting a few tables away. I called his mobile phone, which he glanced at but ignored. 'When I approached him, he saw me and immediately left the restaurant,' he said, adding that he has since lodged a police report. It is learnt that the businessman was fined RM200,000 by the Sessions Court here last year for using a fake 'Datuk' title from Pahang. He had admitted to fraudulently using a letter of endorsement for recipients of a degree, medal or award from Pahang Darul Makmur, believed to be a fake document. The businessman also pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of displaying the Darjah Indera Mahkota Negeri Pahang emblem on his vehicle at the same time and place, which was also believed to be fake. When contacted, Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat confirmed that a police report had been lodged and said investigations were ongoing. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
