Sabah hits record RM84.3bil economic output in 2024

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has recorded consistent economic growth since 2021, with the state's total economic output reaching an all-time high of RM84.3 billion in 2024.
Sabah Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said Sabah's economy posted RM77.8 billion in 2020, rising to RM78.7 billion in 2021 and RM82.1 billion in 2022.
"In 2023, Sabah's economic output reached RM83.2 billion, before climbing further to RM84.3 billion this year," he said in response to a question by Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin (GRS–Nabawan) during the question-and-answer session at the Sabah State Legislative Assembly today.
Abdul Ghani had queried the state government's achievements in economic growth, human capital development, and public wellbeing under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 1.0 development plan, introduced in 2021.
Nizam said Sabah's total trade value surpassed RM100 billion in 2022, recording RM118 billion — a significant increase from RM87.2 billion the previous year.
He said that Malaysia's Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin had acknowledged Sabah's strong trade performance, with the state posting RM107.8 billion in trade for 2024.
"This marks the third consecutive year that Sabah's trade has exceeded the RM100 billion threshold," said Nizam.
He added that the state had generated a total of RM26.22 billion in revenue between 2021 and 2024.
"The rise in revenue can be attributed in part to the Commercial Collaboration Agreement (CCA) between the state government and Petronas, based on the principles of Greater Say, Greater Participation, and Greater Revenue," he said.
On the progress of SMJ 1.0, Nizam said that the development plan had achieved an overall implementation rate of 94 per cent as of May this year.
"Of the 467 initiatives under SMJ 1.0, 94 per cent have been implemented, with 366 initiatives fully completed," he said, citing figures from the SMJ Secretariat.
In terms of industrial growth, Nizam said the state secured 52 realised investments worth RM17.42 billion between 2021 and 2024. An additional RM10.9 billion in investments was approved in the first quarter of this year.
From 2021 to 2024, Sabah recorded RM35.38 billion in project-based investments — comprising RM20.61 billion in domestic investments and RM14.77 billion in foreign investments.
He also highlighted progress in addressing the state's water supply issues, with treated water production increasing from 1,505 Million Litres per Day (MLD) in 2021 to 1,630 MLD in 2024.
The number of water treatment plants also rose, from 85 plants in 2021 and 2022, to 88 in 2023 and 90 last year.
"This reflects the state government's ongoing commitment to improving water supply infrastructure. Various capacity and quality upgrade projects are also underway," he added.

No registration for RM100 cash aid, beware of scams, warns government

Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said the ministry has received complaints about fake links and messages claiming that registration is required to receive the cash aid. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: The government has urged the public to be cautious of scams and other fraud attempts over the one-off RM100 cash assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA). Speaking at an event in George Town, Penang, today, deputy finance minister Lim Hui Ying said the assistance does not require any application or registration whatsoever, Bernama reported. She said the amount will be credited directly into the MyKad of all Malaysians aged 18 and above starting Aug 31. 'We have received numerous inquiries about how to register for the RM100 SARA assistance. There have also been complaints about fake links and messages claiming that registration is required to receive the aid. 'These claims are false and dangerous. Do not click on any such links, they are scams. 'I want to stress that there is no need to apply or register for the RM100 cash aid, as it will be automatically credited to the recipients' MyKad,' she said. Lim, who is the MP for Tanjung, reassured the public that there is no cause for concern as everyone aged 18 and above will receive the cash aid. 'Only if they do not receive it after Aug 31 will we take further action and inform them accordingly,' she said. On July 23, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced several major initiatives by the government, including the one-off RM100 cash aid, the postponement of toll rate hikes on 10 highways, and a drop in the price of RON95 fuel to RM1.99 per litre. Lim also said the government is open to considering the inclusion of wet goods such as chicken, meat and fish under SARA. 'We continue to listen to feedback and suggestions regarding the list of items under SARA. There have been proposals to include wet items such as fish, meat and chicken. We will consider expanding the list when the time is right,' she told reporters. She said the government expanded the SARA initiative on May 1 to include household cleaning products, such as laundry detergent, floor cleaner, and dishwashing liquid. These are in addition to the existing categories covering basic food items, medicines, school supplies, and personal hygiene products. Their inclusion increased the number of product categories from 13 to 14, covering 90,000 types of goods. This decision was based on feedback received during the implementation of SARA earlier this year, she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Masidi: ‘Sabah Tanah Airku' embodies spirit of Sabah's political struggle

Masidi, Gagasan Rakyat leaders, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component members leaders and the delegates after the opening ceremony today. KOTA KINABALU (July 26): Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) deputy president Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun has called on Sabahans to take inspiration from the state anthem 'Sabah Tanah Airku,' describing it as the soul of Sabah's political identity and the guiding force for its future. Speaking at the opening of Gagasan Rakyat's Women, Youth, and Beliawanis joint annual convention here today, Masidi pushed back against persistent accusations of betrayal directed at Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders, saying that the final judgment belongs to the people. 'I will never betray the people of Sabah. I understand the hopes and aspirations of our people. What matters most is not what others say about us, but whether the rakyat believe we deserve to carry forward Sabah's mandate. And I believe we do,' he stressed. Masidi pointed out that the message behind Sabah Tanah Airku, sung at every official function, encapsulates the very values GRS upholds: unity, pride, and relentless commitment to progress. 'The entire spirit of our political life, our love for Sabah, our dream for development, our hope for unity, is captured in that one song. When we say 'Sabah First,' it is not merely a slogan. It is the essence of who we are, and it comes directly from the mandate embedded in our anthem,' Masidi said. He stressed that 'Sabah Maju Jaya' slogan frequently criticized by political opponents, is not a partisan catchphrase but a continuation of the aspirations laid out in the state anthem. 'When someone mocks or belittles 'Sabah Maju Jaya', what they are really doing is belittling their own state. They are mocking their own state anthem. Sabah Maju Jaya was not created by GRS. It is actually a part of our inherited history, and we must uphold it as the foundation of our effort and struggle. 'We want to always be independent, not just physically free, but mentally free. Free to think and determine what is best for Sabah. We do not want our thinking to be influenced by outside elements that make us lose our Sabahan identity. We want to remain Sabahans, with thoughts that are our own. 'And that is why we focus on local parties, because we want Sabah to develop based on its own model of progress. Not because someone else wants us to do this or that. Yes, we want to be friends with others, but we will make friends on our own terms, not on terms dictated by others. This is our struggle,' he stressed. He also took aim at detractors who offer constant criticism without solutions, pointing out, 'People can talk, people can criticize. But there are those who are good at criticizing yet say very little about what their plans are to solve problems. 'I understand there is criticism every day, in the newspapers, in the State Assembly. That is true. But for me, it has reached a point where: 'What you say is your problem, not my problem.' 'Let's focus on what truly matters. We have a track record. What do the critics have to show for themselves? We are not here to silence criticism—we are here to deliver results. Let our work speak for us.' With the state gearing up for the next election, he warned of the consequences of losing local control and GRS' achievements must be defended. 'That is why we must win this election. Because we want Sabah to progress, because we love Sabah, and we want these achievements to be multiplied in the future. We are not merely defending GRS' achievement, we are defending the future of our people, especially the younger generation. 'If we lose this government, others will take over. And if that happens, what will become of Sabah in 10 years? Will our youth still have a place? Will Sabahans still be in charge of Sabah?' he questioned. 'We are not just defending GRS' track record. We are defending the future of our people—especially our young ones. Sabah's future is too important to be handed away,' he said. In a passionate conclusion, Masidi urged unity and focus. 'Let go of petty quarrels. Don't let small conflicts become walls that block big dreams. This is not about individual ambition. This is about ensuring Sabahans remain masters in their own homeland,' he said. 'You are the master. You own Sabah. Not someone else. We, the people of Sabah, must determine our future. No one else,' said Masidi. Gagasan Rakyat lead masidi manjun Sabah state election Sabah Tanah Airku

RM100 Sara aid requires no registration, public warned of scams

GEORGE TOWN: The Finance Ministry has urged the public to be cautious of fraudulent attempts linked to the one-off RM100 cash assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara). Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said the assistance does not require any application or registration, as it will be credited directly to all eligible MyKad holders aged 18 and above starting Aug 31. "We have received numerous inquiries about how to register for the RM100 Saraassistance. "There have also been complaints about fake links and messages claiming that registration is required to receive the aid. These claims are false and highly dangerous. Do not click on any such links - they are scams," she warned. "I want to stress that there is no need to apply or register for the RM100 assistance, as it will be automatically credited to recipients' MyKad. So, there's no cause for concern - everyone aged 18 and above will receive it. "Only if they do not receive it after Aug 31 will we take further action and inform them accordingly," she said. Lim, who is also Tanjong member of parliament, said this to reporters after officiating the Penang Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) Reference Book Launch and the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Chinese Language and Moral Education Answering Techniques Workshop here today. On July 23, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced several major initiatives under the Madani government, including one-off RM100 cash assistance under the Sara initiative, the postponement of toll rate hikes on 10 highways, and a fuel price cut for RON95 to RM1.99 per litre. Meanwhile, Lim said the government is also open to considering the inclusion of wet goods such as chicken, meat, and fish under Sara. However, she noted that this would require thorough study, including gathering feedback from all stakeholders, particularly SARA recipients. "We continue to listen to feedback and suggestions regarding the list of items under Sara. "There have been proposals to include wet goods such as fish, meat, and chicken. We will monitor and assess the situation, and when the time is right and if deemed necessary, we will consider expanding the list," she said. She said that on May 1, the government expanded the Sara initiative to include household cleaning products, such as laundry detergent, floor cleaner, and dishwashing liquid, in addition to the existing categories covering basic food items, medicines, school supplies, and personal hygiene products.
