Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal gave all they could in title fight

Arteta confirmed transfer plans are in place to try and end a 21-year wait for the title.
Martin Odegaard's 89th-minute drive sealed a 2-1 win against relegated Southampton at St Mary's on the final day whilst there was a goal too on his final appearance for Kieran Tierney before departing for Celtic.
There is little secret though behind where the Gunners have fallen short this season.
Their goal tally of 69 is 22 fewer than last season and for the first time in the Premier League era no player made it into double figures in the league, Kai Havertz – who missed three months through injury – finishing top scorer with nine.

They finished 15 points behind last season's total of 89 which would have comfortably been enough to pip Liverpool to the title this campaign.
'There is nothing else to squeeze,' said Arteta, who watched the game alongside co-chairman Josh Kroenke as he served a touchline ban.
'There is not a single drop more to give. Hopefully (the fans) value where we are and where we have brought this football club.
'We're going to have plenty of time to think, to analyse what happened in the season, to learn from it, to take the positive things the team has done and think how can we now go into that little percentage that is missing.'
That search will surely begin with the hunt for a recognised goalscorer.
Though lengthy injuries to Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka have undoubtedly affected Arsenal's goal return, there was nevertheless a feeling at the start of the season that there was a missing piece at the front of the team, which has proved prophetic.
'Believe me, we are on it,' said Arteta. 'We will try to squeeze and think and turn every stone that we possibly can to make this club even more successful.
'We'll sit down and put all the plans together, they are almost done. We will sit down and finalise a few things that still have to be decided.'
Arsenal condemned Saints to a record 30th Premier League defeat late on when Odegaard sidestepped Will Smallbone and lashed the ball into the corner from range.

Earlier, after Tierney had signed off his six-year stay by tapping home his first league goal since Boxing Day 2021, Ross Stewart headed the equaliser for his first Southampton goal, as new manager Will Still – the outgoing boss of Lens in Ligue 1 – watched from the stands.
It was a final match in charge for caretaker Simon Rusk who guided the team through the difficult final weeks of a horrendous season.
'I've had no information on my future,' he said. 'My concentration was to support the players in delivering a game plan to get something out of these games.
'It's good for everyone to have clarity on who the manager is going to be and I'm sure when the time is right, I'll get some clarity on my own future.'

Who is Demir Ege Tiknaz? Celtic transfer 'target' manifesting one dream as another fades

The young Turkish midfielder is attracting interest from clubs across Europe Celtic have reportedly registered an interest in promising Turkish midfielder Demir Ege Tiknaz. The 20-year-old, who is currently on loan at Rio Ave from Besiktas, has caught the eye in his breakout season in Portugal. ‌ And the youngster's impressive showings have drawn attention from big clubs in Germany, France and Italy. ‌ However, the Parkhead side would have to navigate some obstacles in order to land the highly-rated playmaker. Here, Record Sport tells you everything you need to know about the up-and-coming talent. Who is Demir Tiknaz? Born on August 17, 2004, Tiknaz came through the ranks at Turkish giants Besiktas and made his senior debut as a sub in a 3-1 Europa Conference League win against KF Tirana in 2023. Capped at every youth level for his country, Tiknaz racked up 29 appearances for Besiktas before heading out on loan to Rio Ave in search for regular minutes. He helped the Vila do Conde-based club finish 11th in the Primeira Liga, starting in 28 of his 33 appearances. A defensive midfielder, Tiknaz chipped in with four goals and two assists across the campaign. ‌ How much would he cost? This is where it gets slightly complicated for Celtic. Uncapped Tiknaz - who earned his first senior international call-up in March 2025 - is still under contract with parent club, Besiktas. However, Rio Ave hold a £4.25million option-to-buy clause, which they are expected to trigger before the upcoming deadline on Tuesday, June 10. ‌ It's widely believed that Rio Ave's strategy is to sign the rising star permanently before immediately selling him on as clubs across Europe circle. The Portuguese side would double their money by demanding a fee of around £8.5m for the towering midfielder, who stands at 6ft 4in. ‌ That sum is well within Celtic's range, and should the Double-winners get a deal over the line, Tiknaz would become the club's fourth most expensive signing in history behind Arne Engels, Adam Idah and Odsonne Edouard. What has Tiknaz said? Istanbul-born Tiknaz has already overcome a major setback in his career after suffering a cruciate ligament tear in April 2022. That kept him out of action for around nine months before he eventually bounced back and made his Besiktas debut. Speaking to The Athletic, he said: 'On the pitch, you forget everything from your own life. ‌ "During these 90 minutes, it's kind of a therapy. When you touch the ball you forget everything, but after, you remember. Without football, life would really be way more difficult for us. 'When I didn't play football, I watched so many matches and had so many new ideas. When I was back on the pitch, I started playing with more maturity and I felt stronger. 'I felt stronger in the duels. I felt fitter and fresher. After returning from that injury, I thought if I can get through this one, I can get through any other problem.' ‌ Now one of the most highly-sought-after young players in Europe, Tiknaz revealed he models his game on Barcelona icon Sergio Busquets. He said: 'A box-to-box midfielder, that was my aim. Now I can say I'm a little bit like Busquets' style, though I'm taller than him — I am 1.93m. But I'm kind of a playmaker; regista. ‌ 'At the same time, I can play No 8, box-to-box, too. I feel good in these positions. I always want to have possession. I'm that kind of a guy.' As for his future? Tiknaz dreams big. His ultimate ambition was to share a pitch with Lionel Messi. But as that goal fades, he's set his sights on playing at the highest level possible. He added: 'I also had a dream to play with Messi, but it seems quite difficult because he's about to quit in a few years. I have another dream though — that is to play in England, especially in Liverpool if I can.' Florian Wirtz's staggering Liverpool salary demands as talks reach crucial stage

Florian Wirtz will become Liverpool's second-best paid player behind Mohamed Salah if he completes a record-breaking transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in the coming days Florian Wirtz is set to treble his wages if he seals a record transfer to Liverpool, with the Germany playmaker expecting to bank an eye-watering £355,000-per-week. The Premier League champions have submitted a third bid - £100m up front with £15m extra in add-ons - that Bayer Leverkusen look set to reject as they hold out for an estimated £124m up front. ‌ But talks remain active between the clubs and a report in Bild says that the Bundesliga player of the season will also become the Reds' second best-paid player if he rocks up at Anfield - behind Mohamed Salah 's £400,000 but ahead of Virgil van Dijk's £350,000. ‌ Wirtz, 22, has made it clear that Liverpool is the destination he wants and Manchester City have stepped back from their initial interest. Sporting director Richard Hughes is at the forefront of the negotiations and Wirtz is prepared to jet in for a medical next week after featuring for his national team against France in Sunday afternoon's UEFA Nations League third-place play-off. On Friday Leverkusen published images promoting their pre-season tour to Brazil - from July 14 to 24 - featuring an image of Wirtz. The club will use the training facilities of Flamengo while in Rio de Janeiro. But there is a growing expectation that he will be leaving the Bundesliga's second-placed team with Bild saying that the player has already agreed a contract until the summer of 2030 while talks around the fee continue. Liverpool have already completed the signing of full back Jeremie Frimpong - their replacement for Real Madrid-departing Trent Alexander-Arnold - from Leverkusen and are looking to seal a £45m deal for Bournemouth 's Milos Kerkez in the coming days. ‌ Arne Slot's squad is also likely to be bolstered with a new centre forward amid doubts around the future of Darwin Nunez. The Uruguayan has struggled to settle in two seasons at the club and remains linked with a switch to Atletico Madrid, whose head coach Diego Simeone is a major fan. Earlier this week former Reds striker Emile Heskey claimed that the club "have got to" strengthen at No9 ahead of next season's attempted defence of their Premier League title.
