KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Sabah has detained two businesspersons on suspicion of submitting claims containing false details for the supply of machinery and equipment, as well as certification under the Small and Medium Industry (SMI) Assistance Programme worth more than RM3.6 million. According to an MACC source, the two suspects — a man and a woman in their 50s — were detained at about 11 am yesterday when they turned up at the Sabah MACC office to have their statements recorded. 'Initial investigations found that the suspects had submitted two claims containing false particulars under the SMI Assistance Programme to the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR) in 2022 and 2023. 'One of the claims was for the supply of retort machines and entrepreneurs' equipment worth over RM400,000, while the other involved MeSTI, My Food and halal certification services worth over RM3.2 million,' the source said. Meanwhile, Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy, when contacted, confirmed the arrests and said the case was being investigated under Section 18 and Section 28(1)(c) of the MACC Act 2009. Karunanithy said both suspects were released after posting RM1,000 from the RM10,000 bail imposed on them and would be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Special Corruption Sessions Court this Thursday. Meanwhile, in SELANGOR, the state MACC detained a company director for allegedly submitting documents containing false details involving travel claims and the purchase of air conditioners amounting to about RM33,000. According to a source, the female suspect, in her 50s, was detained at about 1 pm yesterday when she turned up at the Selangor MACC office to give her statement. AKPS: KLIA's Terminal 1 sees 26pc rise in ‘Not to Land' notices against foreign travellers from May to July this year
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 13 — The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) reported a 26 per cent increase in cases involving the issuance of Not to Land (NTL) notices at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA1) from May to July this year. In a statement yesterday, the agency said that the number of NTL cases rose from 900 in May to 987 in June and further increased to 1,134 in July. Monitoring at the country's entry points will be intensified, particularly during the early morning hours, to prevent attempts to enter Malaysia through the high-risk aviation sector, said AKPS. According to the agency, 40 Bangladeshis were issued NTL notices at KLIA1 in an operation conducted earlier yesterday. 'They were among 134 foreign nationals screened upon arrival on two flights from Dhaka between 1 am and 6 am,' it said. AKPS said the individuals were denied entry after a review of their travel documents, purpose of entry, and return tickets found their intentions to be suspicious and non-compliant with entry conditions. 'All of the individuals will be deported to their countries of origin within 24 hours,' it said. In another development, AKPS said three foreigners — two Algerians and one Iraqi national — were arrested yesterday for abusing their visit passes after being found begging at the Departure Hall, KLIA1. The agency said the arrests were made during the 'Ulat KLIA' operation conducted in collaboration with the KLIA Security Team (AVSEC) from 8.30 am to 10.30 am. 'Their actions not only violated Malaysia's entry conditions but also tarnished the country's image and disrupted the comfort of passengers at the airport. 'The three were then handed over to the Selangor Immigration Department Enforcement Division for investigation and further action,' AKPS said in a separate statement here. — Bernama

Education Ministry to hold engagement sessions on bullying guidelines after receiving #JusticeForZara memorandum
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Ministry of Education (MOE) will conduct engagement sessions with all stakeholders to explain the current guidelines for handling bullying offences, said Minister Fadhlina Sidek. She said the move was in response to one of the four demands in the #JusticeForZara memorandum submitted to the ministry by a group of student activists here yesterday. 'The ministry is also open to views and suggestions to improve the existing guidelines,' she said in a Facebook post. On the demand for a comprehensive reform of the national education system, particularly in relation to bullying issues, Fadhlina said the ministry had announced several important measures to enhance safety in all educational institutions under its purview. 'This includes conducting safety audits, improving the bullying complaint system, setting up a safety reform committee, taking stern action such as suspending and expelling students involved in bullying, and ensuring psychosocial support aspects are strengthened at every level,' she said. On the demand to make mandatory and periodic training for all teachers, administrators and wardens on crisis intervention, student emotional management and professional procedures in handling bullying complaints, Fadhlina said training aspects would continue to be enhanced to ensure the readiness of school administrators, teachers and wardens. She also said that all educational institutions under the ministry's purview must comply with the guidelines for tackling bullying offences. Regarding the demand for the MOE to provide an open explanation to the public about the case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, she said the ministry would fully cooperate with the police investigation, and updates on the case would be communicated periodically by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). 'The MOE welcomes PDRM's initiative to set up a special task force to handle the case involving the late Zara Qairina,' said Fadhlina, who met with the representatives of the student activists in Parliament to further discuss all concerns raised in the memorandum. — Bernama
