AKPS: KLIA's Terminal 1 sees 26pc rise in ‘Not to Land' notices against foreign travellers from May to July this year
In a statement yesterday, the agency said that the number of NTL cases rose from 900 in May to 987 in June and further increased to 1,134 in July.
Monitoring at the country's entry points will be intensified, particularly during the early morning hours, to prevent attempts to enter Malaysia through the high-risk aviation sector, said AKPS.
According to the agency, 40 Bangladeshis were issued NTL notices at KLIA1 in an operation conducted earlier yesterday.
'They were among 134 foreign nationals screened upon arrival on two flights from Dhaka between 1 am and 6 am,' it said.
AKPS said the individuals were denied entry after a review of their travel documents, purpose of entry, and return tickets found their intentions to be suspicious and non-compliant with entry conditions.
'All of the individuals will be deported to their countries of origin within 24 hours,' it said.
In another development, AKPS said three foreigners — two Algerians and one Iraqi national — were arrested yesterday for abusing their visit passes after being found begging at the Departure Hall, KLIA1.
The agency said the arrests were made during the 'Ulat KLIA' operation conducted in collaboration with the KLIA Security Team (AVSEC) from 8.30 am to 10.30 am.
'Their actions not only violated Malaysia's entry conditions but also tarnished the country's image and disrupted the comfort of passengers at the airport.
'The three were then handed over to the Selangor Immigration Department Enforcement Division for investigation and further action,' AKPS said in a separate statement here. — Bernama

MACC widens probe into online media company after two journalists with military background arrested in smuggling ring
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will investigate an online media company following the arrest of two of its staff members during Op Sohor, who are believed to be involved in a smuggling syndicate. MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that the owner of the company would be summoned soon to provide a statement. On Wednesday (Aug 13), the media reported that MACC had remanded 10 individuals, including five senior MAF officers and two journalists from a news portal, suspected of involvement in a smuggling syndicate in the southern part of the country. Also remanded were a company manager, an administrative assistant from the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), and a foreign woman. High Court upholds conviction of Kuching teacher for sexually assaulting six students, orders jail time to run concurrently
KUCHING, Aug 15 — The High Court here yesterday dismissed the appeal of a boarding school counselling teacher convicted of sexually assaulting six male students, but ordered his prison terms to run concurrently for a total of 15 years. Judicial Commissioner Datuk Faridz Gohim Abdullah made the decision after dismissing the appeal of the 35-year-old appellant to set aside the sentence and conviction handed down by the Sessions Court on Oct 21, 2022. The original consecutive sentence against the 35-year-old appellant totalled 90 years, with each charge carrying 15 years' imprisonment. However, the court upheld the 24 strokes of the cane imposed by the lower court. All the six charges were framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which is punishable under Section 14 of the same Act and read together with Section 16 of the same Act, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and possible caning upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, between 11.30pm and 4am in March, April, and May 2018, the teacher sexually assaulted the students, aged between 14 and 16, at separate times and dates in the school compound. He touched the victims' private parts and thighs, as well as hugged one of them. Police reports were lodged by all the victims and investigations revealed that several of them had been assaulted on multiple occasions. Deputy public prosecutor Nor Azhari Yusof appeared for the prosecution. — The Borneo Post

Selangor police say probing threat to Rafizi's wife for criminal intimidation, hunting sender of text message
SHAH ALAM, Aug 15 — Police are now reportedly hunting for the sender of a threatening message to the wife of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, after their young son was attacked at a shopping centre in Putrajaya earlier this week. Sinar Harian cited Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar saying the wife of the Pandan MP had lodged a report yesterday. 'As a result, police will work with several relevant agencies to trace the owner of the phone number in question,' he said. 'The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code,' he added. Under Section 507 which handles 'criminal intimidation by anonymous communication', one shall be punished with prison up until two years if found guilty, on top of punishment prescribed by Section 506 which handles criminal intimidation. Under Section 506, a guilty person can be imprisoned up to seven years if the threat causes death or grievous hurt. Shazel also said the police have also recorded a statement from the doctor who treated the boy to help with the probe. Yesterday, Rafizi said that a group of whistleblowers had approached him last week with information on a scandal, and alleged that an attack on his son was meant to stop him from pursuing the matter. He said in his opinion this was a strategy to ensure that he drops the matter altogether. Rafizi said police were investigating the possible link between the attack and his work, which he believes is connected. He explained that his son will need repeated blood tests over six months to rule out drugs, poison, or viral infections. Yesterday, Shazeli said the police have tightened security measures for Rafizi following the attack.
