Bahraini Foreign Minister: Bahrain Summit Conveys Messages of Peace and Arab Solidarity
Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani affirmed on Thursday that the Bahrain Summit conveyed clear messages advocating peace and Arab solidarity.
Speaking during the preparatory meeting of Arab foreign ministers ahead of the Arab League Council session, Al Zayani stated, 'The Bahrain Summit delivered a message of peace, Arab unity, and a unified stance aimed at safeguarding Arab national security and shared interests. It called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of hostages and detainees, an end to the humanitarian crisis, and the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.'
He emphasized the centrality of the Palestinian cause, rejecting the displacement of Palestinians from their land, and underscored the importance of safeguarding their legitimate rights as guaranteed by international law and relevant resolutions.
Al Zayani further noted that the summit adopted key resolutions to enhance Arab cooperation, integration, and solidarity. These included initiatives to convene an international conference to resolve the Palestinian issue, support the recognition of an independent Palestinian state, secure full UN membership for Palestine, and uphold the human rights of those affected by conflicts in the region — including the rights to life, health, education, and access to knowledge.
He highlighted Bahrain's commitment to monitoring the coordination and implementation of these resolutions, with the aim of strengthening Arab cooperation at all levels and intensifying joint efforts to confront regional and international challenges, while working towards sustainable peace and prosperity for all the peoples of the region.
Al Zayani also noted Bahrain's continued diplomatic engagement with key international countries to articulate the Arab position and garner global support. He pointed out that Bahrain chaired the Arab Ministerial Committee in Support of Palestine, participated in the joint Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee, and joined the international coalition for the two-state solution led by Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Bahrain co-chaired the Palestine Summit hosted by Egypt, where the Egyptian plan for early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza was endorsed.
Reaffirming Bahrain's commitment to the initiatives it proposed during the summit, Al Zayani announced that royal directives had been issued to establish a national committee tasked with following up on the implementation of these initiatives in coordination with the Arab League Secretariat and relevant international organizations. A comprehensive report on Bahrain's efforts has been prepared and submitted to the council for endorsement and further transmission to the League's leadership.
Concluding his remarks, Al Zayani said, 'I am pleased to hand over the presidency of the Council to Fuad Hussein, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq,' expressing hope that the summit would yield decisions that strengthen the path of joint Arab action and fulfill the shared aspirations and objectives of the Arab nation.

Palestinian President demands Hamas relinquish Gaza
Shafaq News/ Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday called on Hamas to relinquish control of the Gaza Strip and end what he described as its 2007 'coup against Palestinian legitimacy.' In a video address to the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee, Abbas stressed the need to release hostages to halt the bloodshed and secure the release of Palestinian prisoners. 'A ceasefire must be achieved at any cost,' Abbas affirmed, adding that humanitarian aid must be allowed into Gaza and that the Palestinian Authority should resume its civil and security responsibilities in the territory. 'If Hamas wishes to be recognized as a political faction within the PLO, it must adhere to the concept of one state, one law, and one legitimate weapon. Without this, we cannot accept its membership.' Regarding governance in Gaza, he expressed the authority's readiness to assume full responsibility for Gaza in coordination with Arab states and relevant international actors. 'It is vital for peace and security to prevail in Gaza.' The Palestinian president also called for pressure on the Israeli government to release withheld Palestinian funds, 'which amount to roughly $2 billion,' urging regional and international support for financial and economic assistance in line with the government's proposed plan. 'The Palestinian Authority carried out wide-ranging governmental and constitutional reforms, and we affirm that its policy is based on rejecting terrorism and violence and opposing the targeting of civilians regardless of their nationality or affiliation,' he concluded. This year, the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee held a virtual meeting after Israel barred the delegation from entering Ramallah. Formed at the November 2023 Joint Arab-Islamic Extraordinary Summit in Riyadh, the committee includes foreign ministers from key Arab and Islamic countries, along with representatives from the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The meeting, originally intended to be held in person, focused on efforts to end the war in Gaza, facilitate humanitarian aid, and support Palestinian statehood. The participants reaffirmed their commitment to a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders and discussed preparations for an international conference in New York, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.
