Hillsboro Community Prepares to Say Goodbye to Outlet Mall

Yahoo17-04-2025

Hillsboro, Texas (FOX 44) — The City of Hillsboro is saying goodbye to a local landmark as its long-standing Outlet Mall prepares to close its doors for good after more than three decades of business and memories.
The Hillsboro Outlet Mall opened in 1989, and was once a bustling retail hub serving as a social and shopping center for residents throughout Central Texas. But like many malls across the country, it has faced years of declining foot traffic, changing consumer habits, and the rise of online shopping.
'Over the last 20 years, really, the mall has slowly declined to the point that there's really now just one outlet left,' said Hillsboro City Manager Megan Henderson. 'So there wasn't necessarily a decision to close the mall. But once it was clear that the mall was not going to come back, the decision to demolish and start something new was made by the city.'
For locals like Janice Hanes, the closure marks the end of an era.
'The mall, we gon' miss it. But I love this nail salon,' said Hanes, referring to the Pro Nail Salon in the Outlet, she's been a regular for more than two decades.
Her daughter, Melissa Hanes, reflected on the mall's place in their family's history.
'Mama would take me here to buy Christmas gifts for all the kids and the grandkids,' she said. 'And they're all grown up now, just like the changes happening here, but we love this mall. We're really looking forward to what's coming next.'
Before demolition begins, Hillsboro officials are giving the community a chance to say goodbye in a festive way. The city is hosting a four-day farewell event dubbed 'Mallmageddon,' which will include a carnival, rage rooms, a museum, and other attractions designed to honor the mall's role in the town's history.

'Mallmageddon is our celebration of the glory days of the Outlet Mall,' Henderson said. 'The mall is coming down soon, but before we have that happen, we want to remember just how big an impact it had on our community—and really on a lot of people's lives.'
While the mall's closing marks the end of one chapter, city officials say they are already looking toward the future, exploring redevelopment opportunities for the property that once served as a retail anchor for the region.

David Walliams Nazi salute 'unacceptable', BBC says

The BBC has said it was "unacceptable" for David Walliams to make two Nazi salutes during a recording of comedy panel show Would I Lie To You? this week. The comedian and children's author made the gestures during a segment in which a fellow panellist discussed a story about injuring their wrist while waving. Walliams reportedly joined in with increasingly vigorous waves, which culminated in him holding out his arm in a Nazi salute. The show's production company and the BBC both described the gestures as "completely unacceptable" and said the segment would not be broadcast. BBC News has asked representatives for Walliams for comment. The former Britain's Got Talent judge was on the panel for the BBC One show's Christmas special, which was recorded at Pinewood Studios on Tuesday. Journalist Sebastian Topan, who was in the audience, contacted the BBC to describe what happened. One part of the show saw Call The Midwife actress Helen George, who took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, being given a prompt to suggest she had sprained her wrist "from waving too much during the Strictly tour". She then had to try to convince the opposing team that her anecdote was true. After demonstrating the wave, which purportedly left her with an injury, she was told that it was "too little" and was encouraged to make a bigger gesture. "Some other panellist was talking when David Walliams started doing the Nazi salute," Topan told the BBC. "I was shocked at what I had seen." There were "patches of quietened gasps and awkward half-laughs and broken clapping" in the audience, they said. The show's host, Gavin & Stacey star Rob Brydon, then told Walliams the show would be broadcast before the 9pm watershed, effectively suggesting his behaviour was not suitable for a family TV audience. However, as the discussion about George's experience continued, Walliams made the gesture again, adding a sexual gesture with his other hand. It's understood the exchange landed awkwardly in the studio. "The atmosphere was uncomfortable and weird," Topan said. "I think Rob Brydon wanted to get past it as quickly as he could. David Walliams' team-mates looked unsure what to do and were not laughing... It was like an elephant in the room after that as the incident was early on in the recording and so the remainder of the show felt weird." After the recording, a different member of the audience posted on X: "I didn't have David Walliams doing a Nazi salute at the Would I Lie To You? Christmas taping on my 2025 bingo card." A spokesperson for Banijay UK, which owns the show's production company Zeppotron, said: "Any attempt at humour regarding this deeply offensive gesture, whether broadcast or not, is completely unacceptable in any context. "It was immediately acknowledged during the recording that this segment would not be broadcast under any circumstances and we apologise to those who were at the recording for any offence caused." A BBC spokesperson said: "The use of such an offensive gesture is completely unacceptable and we apologise to all at the recording for the offence caused." Walliams, who also hosts a podcast with his former Little Britain co-star Matt Lucas, has not appeared on terrestrial television since 2022. He left his role as a judge on ITV show Britain's Got Talent that year after an audio recording of him making insulting comments about contestants were made public.

Tommy Wirkola is back in the sleigh for Violent Night 2, the sequel to its Christmas-themed action movie released in 2022, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The studio on Wednesday dated the sequel for a Dec. 4, 2026 unwrapping. It's unclear if his lucidity will remain intact for the second outing. Also unclear is if the new story will include Mrs. Claus, briefly mention in the first movie. Universal is eying a September start of production in Winnipeg. Kelly McCormick and David Leitch of 87North are back as producers as are screenwriting team Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Violent Night proved to be a solid hit, gifting the studio a $50 million domestic haul on a budget of around $20 million. It took in an additional $25.9 million from international markets. Wirkola's previous credits include the Norwegian horror hit Dead Snow and relationship action comedy The Trip. In 2022, the filmmaker told The Hollywood Reporter he and the writers were already talking of a sequel that could incorporate ideas they couldn't fit into the first movie. 'We don't see the North Pole, we don't see Mrs. Claus and we don't see the elves,' Wirkola said. 'There were also a few ideas that we loved in the script, but we had to cut them because we couldn't afford to shoot them.' Wirkola is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment. Local woodworker brings Christmas favorite to life

LISBON, Ohio (WKBN) – It's still seven months until Christmas, but just over a month until Christmas in July. A Lisbon man is preparing for both. He's halfway through a special project to bring a Christmas favorite to life, and his design is a full-size version of a classic toy with a set of three life-sized nutcrackers. Jerry Tyson's idea came from a Christmas party where people painted smaller models. He started looking at them and felt he could build them bigger. Each of the woodworking masterpieces is about 6 feet tall.'They were not easy. Each one of these are turned from logs that I physically went and cut down trees and milled each one piece by piece, scaling it up from the model,' Tyson said. The nutcrackers are multiple pieces, all attached. They're made from pine and one took a week to form and put together, followed by up to four days to paint, which was the easiest part.'My favorite one is Father Christmas, and that's because of what he represents,' Tyson said. The third nutcracker is Lisbon's favorite legend, Johnny Appleseed. Tyson plays the part during the annual festival, living in a small cabin downtown. The nutcrackers will be on public display in just a few weeks. 'So, the very first place that I know they're going to is the Columbiana County Fair. They'll be in the art building,' Tyson said. Johnny Appleseed will join Tyson for the September festival. All three will be in the square for Christmas. Each piece carries his signature. He's a one-of-a-kind artist. Tyson hopes that in a world of 'Made in China', people understand what it took to put these together and appreciate the work.'There's things that we do that feeds our belly, and then there's things that we do that feeds our soul, and this feeds my soul. Just knowing that you can give something to your community that they could enjoy,' Tyson said. Tyson's plan calls for adding three more nutcrackers, a female and male elf ( Santa's helpers), plus a wooden boy, which doesn't have all the paint and shows off the character of the wood.
