Realising the dreams of India's freedom fighters
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose would have been proud of our modern self-reliant armed forces and the spectacular success of Operation Sindoor. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar would have commended the government's ushering in of social justice with financial inclusion.
Guided by the principle of antyodaya, governance under the present dispensation has lifted 25 crore Indians out of poverty, which would have been welcomed by Mahatma Gandhi. The abrogation of Article 370 and casting off colonial remnants with historic legislations like Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita would have been lauded by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Providing 94.3 core Indians with a social security safety net and empowering more than 14.5 crore small farmers with financial support would have won Rajendra Prasad's approval. C Rajagopalachari would have cherished the sacred sengol being given primacy in our new Parliament building.
In 1971, when Patel, Ambedkar and Netaji were yet to be conferred India's highest civilian honour, the government headed by Indira Gandhi chose her for awarding the Bharat Ratna. Even the portraits of Netaji Bose (1978) and Ambedkar (1990) were installed in the Central Hall of Parliament under non-Congress governments. In 2003, the Leader of Opposition, Sonia Gandhi had written to President Abdul Kalam, stating, 'It will be a great tragedy if the Central Hall is utilised for installing the portrait of Savarkar'. The Congress party boycotted the event. In 2004, the UPA government removed the plaque in Andaman Cellular jail that commemorated Savarkar's nearly 11 years of imprisonment for combating the oppressive British regime. This plaque was then reinstalled in 2016. The continued smear campaign unleashed by Rahul Gandhi against Savarkar has been most appalling. Recently, the highest court of the land warned of taking suo motu action if Rahul Gandhi made any irresponsible statements against freedom fighters, observing that this is not the way we treat those who gave us freedom.
Be it celebrating nationalist Tamil poet Subramania Bharati's birth anniversary as Indian Language Day or releasing a commemorative coin on Ahilyabhai Holkar's 300th birth anniversary, PM Modi has earnestly endeavoured to honour our patriots. In 2021, the Modi government declared November 15 as Jan Jatiya Gaurav Diwas, extolling the contribution of the tribal community in India's freedom struggle. The date marks the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, the exemplary tribal leader, and Modi was the first ever PM to visit his birth place in Ulihatu village, Jharkhand.
The visionary Bhim app for digital transactions is the present government's homage to Ambedkar's economic vision and five important places (panchteerth) related to Ambedkar's life, both in India and abroad, have been developed as centres of pilgrimage. PM Modi inaugurated world's tallest statue (the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat) of Patel in 2018, and in 2021, dedicated the Kranti Mandir inside the Red Fort to museums paying tribute to Netaji's Indian National Army, India's first war of Independence in 1857, and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
As the nation awaits PM Modi's Independence Day speech, without indulging in hyperbole, one can categorically say that Modi has brought about significant awakening and substantial awareness about our Independence struggle. He has also definitively integrated the dreams of our selfless freedom fighters to the goal of Viksit Bharat, or India as a developed nation, by 2047.

'LS polls be considered null': Congress hits back at BJP's 'vote theft' allegations
Hitting back at the BJP for claiming irregularities in seats contested by some top opposition leaders, the Congress on Wednesday said the data shared by the ruling party points to its collusion with the Election Commission (EC) and demanded that the 2024 Lok Sabha polls be considered "null and void" for being held on "fake voter lists". The entire 2024 general election was conducted on "such fake voter lists", Pawan Khera alleged.(File/AICC) The opposition party also demanded the electronic voter list of Varanasi, from where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had won the electoral contest, "so that people get to know whether he had truly won or not". The Congress's attack came after the ruing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed irregularities in voter registration in the Rae Bareli, Wayanad, Diamond Harbour and Kannauj parliamentary seats, and asked Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Abhishek Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav to resign as Lok Sabha MPs, alleging that they secured their electoral triumphs with "vote chori". Giving a slide-show presentation on the issue at the BJP headquarters here on an "analysis" of the electoral rolls of these constituencies represented by opposition leaders, former Union minister Anurag Thakur also flagged "irregularities" in the voter registration in the Kolathur Assembly seat in Tamil Nadu and the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, and asked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK supremo M K Stalin and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Dimple Yadav to resign for "rigging" their election. Hitting back at Thakur, Congress's media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said, "The numbers of five-six Lok Sabha constituencies that he (Thakur) has released ... it took us six months to collect for just one Vidhan Sabha. Where did he get the electronic voter list from? This shows how deeply aligned BJP leaders are with the EC." "We also want to point out that what he has released today is evidence of a crime. We demand that this evidence be handed over to us within 24 hours so we can proceed with the investigation. We also want the electronic voter list of Varanasi, from where the prime minister won (the Lok Sabha election) by a very small margin, so that people can know whether he truly won or not," Khera told PTI Videos. The entire 2024 general election was conducted on "such fake voter lists", the Congress leader alleged. "Today, he (Thakur) has released the data for five-six Lok Sabha constituencies, whereas we had only released a list of 50 booths from one Vidhan Sabha. This proves, by his own action, that the election was held on a fake voter list. We demand that the Lok Sabha election be considered null and void," Khera said. Thakur slammed Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), SP and DMK leaders for raising questions on the EC and accused them of running a vicious propaganda against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, which is currently underway in Bihar and would be launched in other states, to protect their "vote bank of illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators" and other "intruders". "Seeing this 'shor' (hue and cry) being made by the opposition, it now seems that 'chor machaye shor'", the BJP leader said, suggesting that those who were in the wrong are now crying foul. "Rae Bareli, Wayanad, Kannuaj to Diamond Harbour -- everywhere one question is coming up, why did they make fake voters? Will they resign for indulging in 'vote chori' and protecting intruders?" Thakur asked.

Rahul Gandhi Thanks EC For Getting Chance To Have Tea With Dead People
Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday shared a video of having tea with some "dead" voters from Bihar and thanked the Election Commission for this "unique" experience. A group of voters met the Congress MP and shared how they were declared "dead" by the Election Commission and how their names were removed from the voter list after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Sharing the 3-4 minutes long video, Gandhi captioned, "There have been many interesting experiences in life, but I never got the chance to have tea with 'dead people.' For this unique experience, thank you Election Commission!" In the video clip posted, the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition LoP was seen meeting a group of several people who claimed that they have officially been marked "dead" in voter lists despite being alive. "I have heard that you guys are not alive. The Election Commission has killed you," the LoP stated. He further asked them how they got to know about it, to which one of them replied that they discovered it through the Election Commission's voters list. After this, Gandhi asked the number of such people, to which another man replied, "There are at least 50 such cases in a single panchayat." They alleged that in the constituency of RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Raghupur, many living voters were shown as "dead" in the list provided by the Election Commission. One of the group members urged the Congress MP and Mahagathbandhan alliance to "save Bihar" to which the LoP affirmed that they are trying to stop the electoral malpractices. This development came amid a row that erupted over Rahul Gandhi's "vote theft" allegations against the Election Commission and alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar. On August 7, the Congress MP at a press conference claimed that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were "choreographed" by the EC to benefit the BJP, which he said appeared "immune to anti-incumbency." The LoP stated that the Congress expected to win 16 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka but ended up with only nine. He said the Congress investigated seven unexpected losses, zeroing in on Mahadevapura, where he alleged vote theft involving 100,250 votes. Presenting Congress's research on voting in the Mahadevapura Assembly in Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi alleged "vote chori" (vote theft) of 100,250 votes. Afterwards, the Election Commission on Monday said that Rahul Gandhi "still has time" to submit a formal declaration to substantiate his allegation of "vote theft" or apologise to the country. The Karnataka CEO on Sunday asked Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to submit documents to inquire into his "vote theft" allegations against the poll body.

‘No foreign backing, no arms' for Hezbollah, Lebanon tells Iran's security chief
Lebanon's president warns against foreign-backed armed groups as his cabinet approves a US-backed plan to disarm Hezbollah amid Iranian assurances of respect for sovereignty and renewed debate over the group's weapons. No group in Lebanon is permitted to bear arms or rely on foreign backing, its president told a visiting senior Iranian official on Wednesday after the cabinet approved the goals of a U.S.-backed roadmap to disarm the Iran-aligned Hezbollah group. During a meeting in Beirut with Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's top security body, Joseph Aoun warned against foreign interference in Lebanon's internal affairs, saying the country was open to cooperation with Iran but only within the bounds of national sovereignty and mutual respect. 'Any decision taken by the Lebanese government in consultation with the resistance is respected by us,' he said after separate talks with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, whose Amal movement is an ally of Hezbollah. By 'resistance', Larijani was alluding to the Shi'ite Muslim militant Hezbollah, which was founded in 1982, grew into a 'state-within-a-state' force better armed than the Lebanese army and has repeatedly fought Israel over the decades. 'Iran didn't bring any plan to Lebanon, the U.S. did. Those intervening in Lebanese affairs are those dictating plans and deadlines', said Larijani. He said Lebanon should not 'mix its enemies with its friends - your enemy is Israel, your friend is the resistance'. 'I recommend to Lebanon to always appreciate the value of resistance." The US submitted a plan through President Donald Trump's envoy to the region, Tom Barrack, setting out the most detailed steps yet for disarming Hezbollah, which has rejected mounting calls to disarm since its devastating war with Israel last year. Hezbollah has rejected repeated calls to relinquish its weaponry although it was seriously weakened in the war, with Israel killing most of its leadership in airstrikes and bombings. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD It was the climax of a conflict that began in October 2023 when the group opened fire at Israeli positions along Lebanon's southern frontier in support of its Palestinian Islamist ally Hamas at the start of the Gaza war. Aoun also said recent remarks by some Iranian officials had not been helpful, and reaffirmed that the Lebanese state and its armed forces were solely responsible for protecting all citizens. Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran supported any decision Hezbollah makes, adding that this was not the first attempt to strip the group of its weapons.
