Published on: Tue, Jun 24, 2025 Text Size: PENAMPANG: PKR Penampang has rebuked Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin's recent public statement expressing his intent to contest the Moyog seat, calling it premature and disrespectful to the Pakatan Harapan (PH) seat negotiation process. Penampang PKR Youth Chief Eldridge Laurence Timis claimed that Moyog is traditionally a PH seat calling it 'a fact no one can deny'. 'Any announcement on seat allocations must come from the PH Presidential Council, not from individuals acting unilaterally,' he said in a statement. He stressed that PKR is fully prepared for the upcoming state election and will support any PH-endorsed candidate, but warned against moves that could confuse the public and undermine coalition unity. 'We urge Upko to respect the coalition spirit. No one party or individual should act above the collective process. We stand firm on the principle of consensus, for our shared victory,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? UMS water crisis expected to end by July says Rahman Dahlan

Published on: Tuesday, June 24, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 24, 2025 By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: UMS Board Chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan says the university's water crisis should be resolved by mid-July once the final 2km of piping from the Telibong 2 Plant is completed. The plant, operational but not yet connected, can supply over 80 million litres daily. Delays stem from Pan Borneo Highway construction. RM5 million from the Federal Government is being used for short-term fixes like tube wells. 'UMS is meant to produce graduates, not water,' he remarked. Putin authorises creation of state messaging app to combat WhatsApp and Telegram

Russian President Vladimir Putin attends a meeting at the Kremlin's St. George Hall in Moscow, Russia June 23, 2025. Sputnik/Alexander Kazakov/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday signed a law authorising the development of a state-backed messaging app integrated with government services, as Moscow strives to reduce its dependence on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram. Russia has long sought to establish what it calls digital sovereignty by promoting home-grown services. Its push to replace foreign tech platforms became more urgent as some Western companies pulled out of the Russian market following Moscow's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Russian lawmakers say the state app will have functionality that the likes of Telegram and Meta Platforms' WhatsApp do not. Critics say the fact that Russia will exercise state control over it poses risks to privacy and personal freedoms. Mikhail Klimarev, director of the Internet Protection Society, a Russian digital rights group, said earlier this month he expected Russia to slow the speeds of WhatsApp and Telegram to encourage people to switch over to the new app. (Reporting by Reuters; Writing by Alexander Marrow; Editing by Mark Trevelyan)

Gagasan Rakyat confident of seizing Tanjung Aru from Warisan

Published on: Tuesday, June 24, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 24, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Tanjung Aru Division of Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) is confident that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition will reclaim the Tanjung Aru state seat in the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election (PRN17). Division committee member, Dr. Mohd Ritchie Jay Cheng, said the confidence stems from the coalition's consistent grassroots engagement and outreach efforts in the constituency. "We are confident that we can take back the Tanjung Aru seat from Warisan in the next state election, based on our ongoing efforts to connect with and serve the people here. "The people are able to judge for themselves which party is capable of delivering real progress for Sabah, as seen through the initiatives rolled out by the GRS-led government to benefit communities at all levels," he said. He made the remarks after handing over life jackets and signal lights to registered fishermen at Kampung Sembulan Lama on Sunday (22 June). Speaking on the aid distribution, Dr. Mohd Ritchie, who also chairs the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association, said a total of 150 units of similar aid were being distributed to fishermen in the area. Advertisement The initiative included 50 life jackets and signal lights each for fishermen in Kampung Sembulan Lama, Kampung Tanjung Aru, and Pulau Gaya. "We're concerned about the safety needs of fishermen, especially when out at sea. Life jackets and signal lights are essential for their protection," he said. He added that this was just the first phase of assistance, with plans underway to expand the programme to benefit more fishermen in the near future. The Tanjung Aru state seat is currently held by Datuk Junz Wong of Warisan, who won the seat for a second term during the 2018 state election. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
