Sport360° spoke to Dr. Harmeek Singh, founder of Plan b, to learn about his inspiring vision.
What sports events does Plan b sponsor now?
Plan b doesn't limit itself to any one sport – we support initiatives that serve the community and contribute to the social fabric of the region. Any event that has a positive impact and aligns with our values becomes part of our mission. This philosophy strongly echoes the UAE's national theme of the 'Year of Community,' which we've championed for over two decades through our work.
What motivated Plan b to take on sports events?
For me personally, it comes from my background as a sportsman. Sport is the language of the world – it is beyond borders, culture and history. It brings people together in a manner very few things do, and that sentiment rings very true for the Plan b team. We see sports as more than just events, but as vehicles to bring people together, to be healthy and to be of purpose.
How do you make decisions on what sports events to fund?
We consider opportunities based on the effect they have on the region, the long-term growth potential they have and their contribution to community health. Naturally, we also look at financial viability to make sure the project will be viable. Ultimately, we are attracted to projects that can create a lasting legacy.
What have been your greatest achievements with sports events?
Last year's FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup was a milestone moment for us. It put us on the international map and boosted our credentials as an international sporting nation. It also proved crucial in winning our participation in this year's FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Seychelles – an honor we're immensely proud of.
How do you quantify the effect of your participation in sport?
For me, our impact is not only in the numbers, but in the ripple effect we have. It's about inspiring healthier lifestyles, building communities and leading by example. Whether at a mass level or grassroots level, helping to create a fitter, more inclusive society is something I take personally and lead by example.
What are some of the challenges you encounter while supporting sports events?
One of the most important challenges is developing sustainable partnerships. Developing the correct sponsorship ecosystem is a time-consuming process that involves educating stakeholders about the long-term benefit of investing in sport. If done correctly, a robust financial model can improve the quality and scale of events throughout the sporting ecosystem.
What are Plan b's future aspirations for sports events?
We want to bring homegrown IPs regional, and one day, global. We envision integrating international sporting events into the domestic calendar and solidifying the region as a major player in the global sporting tourism map. To us, sports is not just a segment – it's a pillar for health, culture, and economic development.
Are there any sports event trends that thrill you for the future?
We're especially enthusiastic about the growing number of global events that are driving sports tourism. CSR-based initiatives, particularly those in the areas of people of determination and women's empowerment, are also near and dear to us.
We've created platforms such as She Runs and Cancer Run, which have evolved into strong community movements – and we're determined to expand them even larger.
Are there other aspects you'd like to mention regarding Plan b and sports events?
We've offered a varied portfolio – anything from running, cycling, and football to e-scooters and community leagues. We're always looking for new formats and invite innovative ideas that can be rolled out in the region. We also view ourselves as strategic partners for introducing international IPs to the Middle East and developing them sustainably.

Her research explored how indoor environments affect brain activity, aiming to design healthier office spaces."Khalifa University gave me the freedom to explore neuroscience and architecture," she said, adding that she plans to pursue research, design and Gafoor Haddad, a PhD holder in Robotics, focused his research on reinforcement learning for UAVs."My PhD introduced reinforcement learning techniques for UAVs with slung loads, enabling them to pick and place items accurately – even when conditions like cable length or load mass change. It addresses the challenge of real-world adaptability," he university's comprehensive support, global exposure and participation in hackathons were pivotal in shaping his Alzaabi, who holds a Master's in Computer Science (AI), said: "This degree came with challenges, but each one pushed me to grow – technically and personally."Her research developed energy-efficient AI models for underwater navigation."It addresses the limitations of conventional AI, especially where energy efficiency is critical," she Almarzooqi, who holds a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering (Excellent with Honors) and led the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics' KU Chapter, won national awards, and joined CubeSat projects with global partners."Today is not just about earning a degree - it is about perseverance and service to our country.""I want to keep contributing to aerospace through innovation and service," she Al Jasmi, Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering degree holder, called her KU experience "truly rewarding and it deepened my interest in the field".She thanked her family and shared how the university's evolving curriculum and her internship at KAIST, Korea, expanded her skills. Abu Dhabi to get Dh40bn wellness island as Aldar bets big on lifestyle-led urban growth
3 June 2025 01:00 ISIDORA CIRIC (ABU DHABI)Abu Dhabi's real estate ambitions just got a Dh40 billion wellness upgrade, with Fahid Island — Aldar's newest development — indicating that intent, rather than scale alone, has become a defining feature of the emirate's urban planning between Yas Island and Saadiyat, the 2.7 million square metre masterplan blends residential, recreational, and natural spaces, creating a mixed-use community where every resident lives within a five-minute walk of the sea and no more than 250 metres from green island, marketed as Abu Dhabi's first wellness-focused destination, includes more than 6,000 homes, a top-tier international school, retail and hospitality offerings, and 30% of the land reserved for green areas. 'Wellness is a mega trend, and for Aldar, that's not a new thing. Whether it's spa and hospitality, food and nutrition, sleep and breathing - it's everywhere,' Jonathan Emery, CEO of Aldar Development, said in an interview with Aletihad on Monday. 'The challenge for Aldar is, how do we bring that into a physical real estate solution? How do you actually make it real? Rather than just an experience, we have to build the stage for it, and that's what we're trying to do.' Designing for Wellbeing, Rooted in Community Fahid Island's masterplan builds on what Aldar has learned from years of work on Yas and Saadiyat. But Emery is quick to point out that this isn't a cut-and-paste version of previous he said, the project aims to respond to the new expectations of both local and international buyers, many of whom are looking for something different post-pandemic - more nature, less distance, and a quieter, more intentional way of a result, Fahid Island is being designed as a fully walkable and connected environment, with 15km of shaded pedestrian routes and bridges connecting both sides of the island to limit car use. It will also feature a 10km landscaped Berm Park, complete with cycling routes and running trails, and a 2km promenade.'We've learned how to optimise the natural benefits of the island,' Emery said. 'How to work with the mangroves, even with the wind, the sea, and the sun. Just understanding what those things mean to people.'The emphasis on proximity, ecology and liveability also ties into the UAE's current national theme, the Year of Community. In the case of Fahid Island, that has meant prioritising walkability, shared public areas and amenities that bring residents into contact with one another. Emery described this approach as rooted in the UAE's sense of 'generosity', not in scale, but in how space is shared.'It's about how we allocate space and how we create opportunities for people to meet. That's very much in line with the values of the UAE, and the kind of community we're trying to build.' Backed by Strong Funding and Market Momentum The first phase of Fahid Island, which includes the school and residential buildings, is expected to be completed by 2029. 'It's an amazing talent pool that can help it achieve its ambition.' 'That, combined with a focus on quality and problem-solving, is what's driving the next phase of development.'
