Bayern Munich move came 'too early' for Julian Nagelsmann as Germany boss admits he shouldn't have left RB Leipzig for ill-fated spell at Bundesliga giants

WHAT HAPPENED?
Nagelsmann became the most expensive German coach in history when Bayern paid €25 million (£22m/$29m) to Leipzig for his services in 2021. He won the Bundesliga in his debut season but suffered a Champions League exit at the hands of Unai Emery's Villarreal. In the following campaign, a run of poor domestic results and strained relationships within the dressing room led to his dismissal, with Thomas Tuchel replacing him as Bayern manager in 2023.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Nagelsmann was just 33 when he agreed to leave RB Leipzig for the Bavarian giants and admits that the switch to the Allianz Arena may have been premature, suggesting he could have achieved more had he stayed where he was.
WHAT NAGELSMANN SAID
Naggelsmann said: "Looking back, I left a bit too early. There are also players who sometimes move somewhere too early. I guess I did that too even though it wasn't a mistake to go to Bayern, but in retrospect, I felt really comfortable here and could have achieved a lot more with the club."
Speaking about the move, Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff expressed his regret over letting Nagelsmann leave, saying: 'For me, Julian Nagelsmann was the best coach I've ever experienced. An outstanding coach."
WHAT NEXT FOR NAGELSMANN
Now in charge of Germany, Nagelsmann is tasked with guiding the national team to World Cup success in 2026.

New Feyenoord signing under fire after dramatic Champions League night
Feyenoord beat Fenerbahce 2-1 last night in a dramatic first leg of Champions League qualifying. The first clash in the third round saw a Quinten Timber goal cancelled out late on by Sofyan Amrabat, before Anis Hadj Moussa rose heroically to nod in a Jordan Bos cross in the 91st minute. However, after the jubilation subsided amongst the fanbase, the Rotterdammers' blunt critical thought had time to manifest around new signing Sem Steijn. Steijn, who was brought in this summer as a promising goal-scorer from midfield and immediately appointed captain, was the target of criticism from a large part of the Legion. In the first half, when Feyenoord were playing convincingly, there were sceptical voices about Steijn's performance. Former midfielder Willie Overtoom noted that things were 'going a bit too fast for Steijn and Ayase Ueda' before the interval. As Fenerbahçe came more into the game in the second half, the tone became harsher. 'Steijn simply can't do anything,' wrote one fan. Another responded: 'Steijn is at a minimum at this level. Now it requires more than just clever free play. You also need to be able to handle the ball!' Supporters were particularly annoyed by his lack of presence in midfield and his lack of possession. 'Look at how Steijn is walking. Not a decent touch or a proper pass. And captain? What a joke,' one player said sharply. Another added: 'Steijn runs too much towards the ball and with it. You should pick up your man, not run with the ball.' That he was appointed captain of the team by Robin van Persie is surprising. 'Why would you make Steijn captain if you're not even sure if he'll play?' one supporter wondered. Another was more blunt: 'They're laughing their heads off at FC Twente.' While Steijn received the most criticism, there were also concerns about other players. Up front, centre forward Ueda once again looked out of his depth. 'Ueda is such a weak link. Get a striker,' was a frequent refrain. 'We'll play with 10 men as long as he's still there.' The Japanese striker was again criticised for being unable to hold onto the ball or be available for a pass. 'Ueda really likes to eat grass,' someone cynically remarked. Leo Sauer, while energetic in the first half, also completely regressed in the second. 'Sauer can't handle this level yet,' he repeatedly said. 'His tank is simply empty after 60 minutes.' Supporters clamoured for a substitution, which was made after 61 minutes by Robin van Persie. With Fenerbahce hosting the second leg, the new signings will either have to adapt quickly or face rotation, as Jose Mourinho has hinted at a ferocious atmosphere in Istanbul. GBeNeFN | Max Bradfield

Hamburg sign Warmed Omari on loan from Rennes
Hamburg have officially confirmed the signing of centre-back Warmed Omari on loan from Stade Rennes. Virtually all German footballing media outlets confirm that a purchase option is part of the deal. The 25-year-old may remain with the newly promoted Bundesliga outfit for much longer. Kicker reports that Omari's arrival constitutes the end of Hamburg's pursuit of Austrian defender Stefan Posch. The longtime Hoffenheim professional simply proved too expensive for the Hanseatic city state side. Hamburg dropped their interest in German centre-back Armel Bella Kotchap for the same reason. Omari will nevertheless not be the last addition to Hamburg's defensive corps this summer. Die Rothosen maintain interest in Tottenham's Luka Vuskovic. The signing of Georgian right back Giorgi Gocholeishvili is also expected to be completed shortly. '[Omari is] a modern center back with an interesting profile,' HSV sporting director Claus Costa noted in a club statement. 'He is fast, technically skilled, and has good passing ability. He defends intelligently and courageously. With his core competencies, he will make our defense even more versatile.' 'In Warmed, we have signed a player who has already gained a lot of experience in Ligue 1 and in European competitions,' HSV board-member-for-sport Stefan Kuntz added. 'At the same time, he still has potential for development. We want to work with him to bring this out.' 'I had great talks during which I felt appreciation with the sporting directors and the coach,' the player himself said. 'Now I'm looking forward to getting to know my new teammates and helping HSV achieve its sporting goals.' GGFN |
