Renovate all MAMC hostels, ensure fear-free atmosphere on campus, CM tells officials
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday issued several directions to the departments concerned after meeting students from Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) at the Secretariat. She asked the Public Works Department to immediately start renovating all the existing hostels and expedite the construction of new ones, and instructed officials to ensure night-time safety of students by installing high-wattage LED street lights, increasing the deployment of security personnel and ensuring 24x7 CCTV surveillance.
The interaction was held four days after Ms. Gupta, along with Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena and Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, attended a meeting called by the MAMC Dean to discuss concerns about accommodation and security of students and doctors.
During the meeting, the students informed the CM about the dilapidated state of hostels, poor lighting, illegal encroachments, and shortage of security personnel. Women students, in particular, raised concerns regarding their safety, said an official.
'Extremely cramped'
A statement by the CM Office stated that the seven hostels constructed since the establishment of the college were meant for 1,200 students, whereas over 3,200 students currently reside in 'extremely cramped' conditions, with up to eight beds in a room, shared cupboards, and no provision for basic amenities such as study tables.
Ms. Gupta expressed 'grave concern over the severe negligence and lack of accountability on the part of previous governments', the statement added. 'It's appalling to see the poor state of such a prestigious institution like Maulana Azad Medical College and the condition of the students studying there,' it also quoted the CM as saying.
Ms. Gupta told the students that her governmentstands with them.
'Students of prestigious institutions like MAMC are our future, and we will extend every possible support to them,' she said.
'Will visit soon'
The statement said that Ms. Gupta had directed officials to submit progress reports every 15 days and that the CM had told the students she would visit the campus soon to inspect the situation, 'engage directly' with them.

The first hurdle before the IUML was to make Aryadan Shoukath, whose past utterances against its leaders remained a bad memory, acceptable to its cadre. It sorted the problem out with envious flexibility, despite constant efforts by rivals to rake up the issue on social media. The next issue for the UDF was P V Anvar, whose mercurial character and contradictory utterances baffled all. After Satheesan took the crucial decision to keep him out of the UDF, the IUML stood by Congress despite its difference of opinion. There were also problems with the UDF associating with the Welfare Party, the political wing of the Jama'at-e-Islami, an organisation it had kept at an arm's length, citing its extremist leanings. It became the IUML's responsibility to justify the association, which was done by P K Kunhalikutty who said the UDF will not say 'no' to votes from any corner. The League showed maturity in dealing with the allegation of nurturing extremist elements. Kunhalikutty maintained the decency after the result was announced. 'Nilambur is the cross section of Kerala where there is the presence of all communities,' he said, adding that the UDF win was a reflection of the secular mind of the state.

AP eyes Rs 1L-cr investments in aerospace, defence sectors
Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday underlined the need for focusing on advanced aerospace and defence technologies with an aim to attract investments up to Rs 1 lakh crore in both the sectors over the next five years. Speaking at a review meeting on the Aerospace and Defence Policy 4.0 (2025–2030) at the Secretariat here, the Chief Minister said the state should be positioned as 'a hub for advanced technologies and innovation in the aerospace and defence sectors' in the wake of Operation Sindoor. He pointed out immense growth potential in national defence and internal security and said the new policy should play a pivotal role in facilitating the establishment of industries aligned with these priorities. Naidu suggested several amendments to the policy framework to ensure a top focus for national security. The new policy, which will target investments up to Rs 1 lakh crore, will focus on developing specialised manufacturing corridors across Andhra Pradesh, including Visakhapatnam-Srikakulam for naval systems, Jaggaiahpet-Donakonda for missile production, Kurnool-Orvakal for drone technologies, and Lepakshi-Madakasira for aerospace electronics. Tirupati is expected to emerge as a research and development hub with the proposed DRDO Centre of Excellence. According to officials, 23 companies invested Rs 22,000 crore in state's aerospace and defence clusters till date, generating employment for 17,000 people. Further, Bharat Forge and Millimetre Wave (MMW) companies are preparing to invest in the Madakasira cluster. The new policy is expected to bring in more investments. Naidu also underscored the need to support MSMEs in the sector and proposed a Rs 100-crore annual corpus fund, along with the inclusion of logistics subsidies in the new policy. 'MSMEs must be strengthened. There should be a benchmark for quality in allied industries. Value addition is essential, and marketing and branding are equally important. The vision of 'One Family, One Entrepreneur' must be realized,' he said. It was noted during the review meeting that India's annual defence product market is valued at Rs 1.27 lakh crore, with public sector enterprises accounting for 73 per cent of production. The private sector contributes 21 per cent, while Public-Private-Partnerships account for the remaining 6 per cent. Aerospace and Defence Advisor Satish Reddy also joined the review meeting via video conference and offered his suggestions.

Questioning silence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and government, the BJP MP alleged that the state leadership have agreed that there is a huge amount of corruption in the state. Speaking to ANI, Bommai says, 'The frustration about corruption in the ruling party has reached the point of no return. That's why ruling party MLAs are complaining about the corruption in transfers, in getting the work done, to get the work order, and to get the bills...' 'Every day, one or the other MLA cries, but the whole government, including the CM, is silent. That means they have agreed that there is a huge amount of corruption in the state. Financially, it has gone broke. Ministers are writing open letters instead of speaking in the cabinet...' he added. Bommai also announced that the BJP state unit will soon stage multiple 'Jan Andolans' against the Congress government over the matter for which party leaders will soon conduct a meeting. He said, 'Therefore, the BJP state unit will sit together and frame the issues where the development has not occurred. We will have a Jan Andolan in different regions. His reaction came after BR Patil's acknowledgment of a viral audio clip that has sparked allegations of corruption in the housing department. Patil acknowledged that it was his voice in the audio clip that went viral on social media, where a phone conversation purportedly between Patil and Sarfaraz Khan, the personal assistant (PA) to Karnataka Housing and Minority Welfare Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan, has brought the Congress government under fire due to allegations of irregularities in the housing allotment. Speaking on the matter, Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy said, '... Illegal activities took place in BR Patil's constituency. Two days ago, he called the minister's private secretary... But that private secretary said that if anything goes wrong, then they will make the decision, and he asked for the documents. This is the adamant reply by that officer... He is the main person who loots the state, collecting the money in that department, who is the kingpin. How is he going to take action against these kinds of activities?...' Meanwhile, Congress MLA BR Patil said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah invited him for a meeting. He would meet him on June 25, possibly to discuss the allegations levelled by the former. 'Yesterday, the CM called me for a meeting. I will meet him on the evening of June 25. He asked me where I was and whether I was coming to Raichur. He asked me to meet him. He did not ask me anything about the audio. I have owned that it was my voice,' Patil told reporters here. When asked about Karnataka Housing Minister Khan denying the allegations, he reiterated, 'It is my voice (in the viral audio clip). I was the one who was talking. What else do you want?... He also has the right to deny it (allegations).' Patil earlier levelled serious allegations against the Housing Board, stating that houses under the Rajiv Gandhi housing scheme are allotted only when bribes are paid. (ANI)
