Aizawl: Resurgence of African Swine Fever (ASF) in March this year has led to the death of 5,959 pigs in Mizoram. While 2,208 families have been affected, 91 villages and localities and five districts have been declared infected, state animal husbandry & veterinary officials said on Sunday.

The officials further said 16 pig casualties had been reported each from Lunglei and Khawzawl district on Sunday, while the same number of pigs had been culled in the two districts, before adding that over 2000 pigs had been culled this year.
While ASF infestation has been confined to urban areas in Mamit and Khawzawl districts, it has significantly spread into the rural areas of southern Mizoram's Lawngtlai, Siaha and Lunglei districts.
Siaha has been the most severely affected, reporting 3,180 pig deaths, followed by Lawngtlai at 1,746 and Khawzawl at 505.

East Aizawl, July 25 (UNI) The Mizoram animal husbandry and veterinary department has declared 100 villages and localities across six districts as African Swine Fever (ASF)-infected areas, as the disease continues to spread. As of today, a total of 2,369 pig farming families have been impacted by the resurgence of ASF, officials confirmed. On Friday alone, 41 pigs were reported dead across three districts. Khawzawl district in the north-eastern part of Mizoram saw the highest casualties, with 33 pigs lost, while Lunglei district in the south, which borders Bangladesh, reported seven fatalities. Mamit district, sharing a border with Tripura, recorded one casualty. To curb the outbreak, authorities have culled 77 pigs on the same day, with the majority of the culling occurring in Lunglei (72 pigs, including 58 from previous reports). Smaller culling operations took place in Khawzawl (3 pigs) and Mamit (2 pigs). The total number of pig casualties since the onset of the outbreak stands at 6,296, with 2,362 pigs having been culled to prevent further spread of the deadly disease. The southern district of Siaha has been the hardest hit, accounting for the highest number of casualties—3,191 pigs. Siaha is followed by Lawngtlai district, which borders Myanmar and Bangladesh, with 1,757 pig deaths, and Khawzawl district with 735 pig casualties. In terms of culling, Siaha has culled 935 pigs, while Lunglei and Lawngtlai have culled 878 and 394 pigs, respectively. The ASF outbreak has devastated communities, with 1,215 families affected in Siaha, followed by 380 in Lawngtlai, 349 in Lunglei, and 313 in Khawzawl. Veterinary officials are continuing efforts to contain the spread of the disease while providing support to the affected families. Champhai district registered pig deaths for the first time while Mamit district, bordering Tripura and Bangladesh, for the first time sees the disease spreading to rural areas. State veterinary officials said northeastern Mizoram's Khawzawl district registered the largest number of daily casualty at 67 in six villages and localities, followed by Chhippui village in Mamit district as 20 pigs died for the first time in the village while it was earlier confined to Zawlnuam town. Champhai district, bordering Myanmar, for the first time registered 18 deaths in four villages.
