‘Travesty' no officers prosecuted for Jean Charles de Menezes' death
Dozens of people joined his relatives for a vigil outside Stockwell Tube station in south London, where the Brazilian was shot and killed by police the day after failed bombing attempts on the London transport network.
It came two weeks after the 7/7 terror attacks, which killed 52 people in central London in 2005.
Mr de Menezes' family were joined at a memorial outside the station to pay tribute and lay flowers, to mark the 20th anniversary of his death.
A minute's silence was held to mark the moment the 27-year-old was killed, a prayer was also read in both Portuguese and English, and traditional South American music was played in his honour.
Family members and supporters of the campaign wore black T-shirts which read: '20 years: Justice denied. Justice4Jean.'
Relatives say the anniversary marks a renewed call for truth and accountability for those responsible for his death.
Mr de Menezes was shot seven times in the head the day after police mistakenly identified him as one of the suspects for the failed bombings.
Would-be suicide bombers had targeted the transport network on July 21, but their devices failed to explode.
Police found an address in Scotia Road, Tulse Hill, written on a gym membership in one of the unexploded bags used by the bombers.
Mr de Menezes, who lived in one of the flats at Scotia Road, was wrongly identified by police as Hussain Osman, one of the terrorists.
He was shot dead at Stockwell Tube station on July 22 2005.
His family said it is 'a travesty' that no police officer has been held accountable for his death.
Patricia da Silva Armani, Mr de Menezes' cousin, said: 'He was a completely innocent man. And yet, he was shot in cold blood.
'To make things worse, lies were spread to justify the unjustifiable.
'For our family, the grief of that loss and the injustice surrounding it are still with us, every single day.
'Nothing can erase the pain of knowing that the life of a hard-working, kind, and honest young man was taken from us out of prejudice and incompetence.
'To this day, no police officer has been held accountable for Jean's death. That is a travesty.
'It is unacceptable that agents of the state can act with impunity. Without accountability, there is no justice.
'Jean's memory demands more than words – it demands truth, accountability, and real change. We will not forget. We will not be silent.'
No officers were ever prosecuted for the killing of Mr De Menezes but the Metropolitan Police were fined for breaching health and safety laws.
Dame Cressida Dick, who became Metropolitan Police commissioner in 2017, led the operation in which Mr de Menezes died.
Yasmin Khan, the campaign's lawyer, said: 'Twenty years ago today, Jean Charles de Menezes stepped on to a train here at Stockwell station and never came home.
'We remember him today, because the system that killed him never faced justice, and not a single police officer was ever held accountable.'
Ms Khan added: 'What I've learned from these people we see standing in front of you is to remember Jean Charles is a lesson in refusing to be silent.
'It's an honour, not just to his life, but to the bravery of those who fought for him to remind us that the fight for justice is long.
'Justice may have been denied, but their fight was worth every breath.'

Death of woman in Poole Park treated as 'unexplained'

Boy tells jury he ordered knife ‘weeks' before stabbing fellow pupil to death
A 15-year-old boy has told a jury he ordered the knife he used to kill a fellow pupil 'weeks' before the fatal stabbing at their school. The teenager was asked about the weapon as he gave evidence for a fifth day at his trial for the murder of Harvey Willgoose, also 15, at All Saints Catholic High School, in Sheffield, on February 3. On Wednesday, the boy was asked by Richard Thyne KC, prosecuting, whether it was 'days, weeks or months' before Harvey's death that he ordered the knife online. The boy said: 'Weeks or months. I'm pretty sure it was weeks.' He then said he thought it was 'after January 16'. The jury has heard about an incident in the school on January 16 when the defendant was involved in an altercation with another student and ended up repeatedly punching a wall in an inclusion room. Mr Thyne asked the boy why he ordered the knife, and he replied: 'For protection'. The boy admitted he had pictures of 'lots of different kinds of knives' on his phone and the prosecutor asked him why he chose that particular weapon. The defendant told the jury: 'Because it was a scary knife. 'Somebody would try and attack me and I would pull it out and they wouldn't try and attack me.' Mr Thyne asked him about a number of photos on his phone of him with this particular knife. The boy said he posted two of them on social media. The prosecutor asked: 'To send a message out you weren't to be messed with?' The boy agreed and said he wanted some people to believe he carried a knife. Asked by Mr Thyne if he wanted some people to believe he was prepared to use the knife, the defendant told the jury: 'No. Not really. But, if they saw I had a knife, they wouldn't really want to mess with me.' The jury at Sheffield Crown Court has been shown CCTV footage of Harvey being stabbed in a courtyard at the school at lunchtime on February 3. The court has heard that the defendant, who cannot be named, has admitted manslaughter but denies murder. He has also admitted possession of a knife on school premises. On Wednesday, the boy was asked by Mr Thyne: 'Had you tried to provoke him (Harvey)?' When the defendant said 'no', Mr Thyne asked him: 'Had you tried to wind him up earlier in the day?' The boy replied: 'No, it was the other way around.' Mr Thyne then asked: 'Were you trying to get Harvey to do something to you so you could let out your anger?' Again the boy replied 'no'. The defendant told the jury how he also bought another knife online, which was based on a design from the video game Assassin's Creed. Mr Thyne said: 'Did you have a reputation for having an interest in knives?' Th boy said: 'Not really.' He added: 'That's not what I'm known for.' Addressing the jury at the beginning of the trial, Gul Nawaz Hussain KC, defending, said: '(The defendant) did not set out to kill or seriously hurt anyone. 'The defence say (the defendant's) actions that day were the end result of a long period of bullying, poor treatment and violence, things that built one upon another until he lost control and did tragically what we've all seen.' The defendant will continue to give evidence on Thursday.

An 18-year-old mum has been arrested after allegedly leaving her little girl inside a hot car unattended. The alleged incident unfolded at the Regal Cinema in Lake City, Utah, on Saturday, where Merriex is said to have left her vulnerable tot in her 2002 Cadillac Escalade. The 18-year-old parent has been charged with felony child neglect, according to US police reports. After doing this "a few times", she allegedly ended up leaving her daughter alone in the car. She left the Smurfs film occasionally to go out and check on her daughter, police claim, and even allegedly tasked her siblings with taking it in turns to check on her. Merriex is reportedly being held at the Columbia County Jail on $50,000 (£36,9600) bond. "Our officers acted swiftly to ensure the safety of this young child," Chief of Police Gerald Butler said in a statement Monday. "Leaving a child unattended in a vehicle under these conditions is unacceptable. We are thankful the child is safe and urge all parents to prioritize the well-being of their children at all times." The two-year-old girl has recovered from the potentially fatal incident, according to her family who spoke to the local CBS station. It comes as another woman was arrested last monnth after allegedly leaving her two young children inside a parked car for more than two hours, resulting in the death of one child. In Bakersfield, California, officers responded to a report of a medical emergency at a business complex on South Real Road. Upon arrival, they discovered a one-year-old and a two-year-old unresponsive inside a vehicle. Police claim that the children had been left unattended while their mother, 20-year-old Maya Hernandez, was inside a spa. One of the children died from heat-related injuries, while the other was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. So far this year, 15 children have tragically died in the United States after being left alone in vehicles, including in California, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, New Jersey, and North Carolina.
