Cowboys' Trevon Diggs Facing Financial Loss After Absence

Newsweek2 days ago

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for the next phase of OTAs, star cornerback Trevon Diggs has an important decision to make in the coming weeks.
The injured cornerback could be looking at a financial loss if he chooses to stay away from the team during the mandatory portion of minicamp. While that rule would be applied to any player who misses the action, hence the keyword being "mandatory," Diggs' lack of presence at the first two phases of minicamp raised a red flag on a clause attached to his deal with the Cowboys.
According to ESPN's Todd Archer, Diggs' contract states he would need to take part in at least 84 percent of offseason programs in some capacity in order to avoid triggering a financial loss.

For Diggs, he could lose up to $500,000 of his 2025 base salary.
Lately, Diggs has been in Miami, Florida, rehabbing his surgically repaired left knee. Choosing to do the rehab in Dallas would've helped Diggs avoid this type of situation.
The good news is that the Cowboys are far from concerned about the situation. When Dallas' head coach Brian Schottenheimer spoke on the situation, he suggested that "all signs are positive" regarding Diggs.
Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones echoed a similar sentiment, noting that Diggs is "getting the work done" in his rehab. For the time being, the Cowboys' organization believes that Diggs will be in attendance for the minicamp when it takes place, beginning on June 10, and wrapping up on the 12th of the month.
Last season, Diggs appeared in the first 10 matchups of the season for the Cowboys. After the team's Week 10 loss against the Houston Texans, Diggs went inactive for two weeks in a row. He would return during Week 14 to take on the Bengals. After a five-tackle effort, Diggs was sidelined for the remainder of the season. He missed four games in a row due to a knee injury.
According to ESPN, Diggs is "likely" to start training camp on the PUP list. Right now, his first four weeks of the 2025 NFL season are in danger. If Diggs can't get off the list by the start of the season, he would automatically have to sit out for four games.
The Cowboys aren't jumping the gun just yet. Until they are able to see Diggs and the status of his recovery in person, there won't be any decisions made regarding his status for training camp. Dallas has not revealed the official start date of training camp, but Diggs should have a better idea of his status for the practices by late July, when everything begins.

Insider reveals Steelers HC Mike Tomlin 'led the charge' to sign Aaron Rodgers

Insider reveals Steelers HC Mike Tomlin 'led the charge' to sign Aaron Rodgers Mike Tomlin isn't done channeling his inner Pittsburgh GM — as insider Jeremy Fowler reported that the long-time Steelers head coach "led the charge" to sign Aaron Rodgers. On ESPN's SportsCenter, Fowler was asked how the Steelers finally got Rodgers' pen to paper — and this is what he had to say: "Mike Tomlin led the charge to bring that man, Aaron Rodgers, to the Pittsburgh Steelers. I'm told they had several meaningful conversations over recent weeks and months to hash all this out," Fowler explained. "I was told that things started to intensify Thursday morning inside the Steelers' building. That's where people there felt, 'Okay, this is gonna get done,' and there was a sense of relief — because they really hadn't gotten a full assurance just yet." There were previous reports that Tomlin may have been behind the George Pickens trade as well — but if the Rodgers-Steelers union works out, there will be no complaints over the head coach's extracurricular general managing duties. Cooper Witten, son of Dallas Cowboys legend, to camp at Notre Dame

The son of an NFL legend will have a chance to shine at Notre Dame's Irish Invasion event this weekend. Top Fighting Irish target Cooper Witten will be at the program's signature recruiting event along with a bevy of other top prospects who have been on ND's radar. Advertisement The Class of 2027 five-star linebacker from Liberty Christian (Argyle, TX) grew up watching his father, Jason, excel in a likely Hall of Fame career with the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders. After retirement, Witten became the head coach at Liberty Christian, where Cooper and his older brother CJ attend. He led the program to back to back state championships in 2023 and 2024. The 6-foot and 3-inch, 210-pound younger Witten earned an offer from Clemson Wednesday after showcasing his skills at the Dabo Swinney football camp. Witten moves with ease and has run a 10.91-second 100 meters. His elite closing speed and football instincts make him one of the premiere defenders in his class. His offer list includes heavy hitters outside of Notre Dame, including Alabama, Michigan, Texas and his father's alma mater, Tennessee. In his sophomore season, he had 45 tackles, five interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) and seven receiving scores on offense.
