
French Chef Cyril Lignac Enjoys Moroccan Cuisine in Marrakech Visit
Rabat – French chef Cyril Lignac recently paid a visit to the Moroccan red city of Marrakech, making the most of the city as he got to enjoy Moroccan culinary traditions.
The chef, who is the owner of gourmet restaurants Le Quinzième and Le Chardenoux, shared the highlights of his visit in a series of photos and videos on Instagram with the caption: 'One of my favorite cuisines.'
During his visit, Lignac tried several signature Moroccan dishes like Tajine, Bestilla, and the must-try Moroccan mint tea.
The chef also shared a video of him making the famous tafarnout bread, a type of traditional bread made by Morocco's Amazigh communities. In the video, the French chef is seen baking the bread inside a clay oven, known as tafarnout, hence the name.
Lignac also enjoyed the beauty of Marrakech. His posts depict him discovering Jemaa el Fna, a square and market place in the city's old medina.
Lignac is also a known pastry chef and television personality. He owns several other restaurants, including La Patisserie Cyril Lignac, a high end pastry shop, and Dragon, an Asian fusion restaurant.
He became famous through shows like Oui Chef! And Le Meilleur Pastissier. Lignac has released several cookbooks.

Born in Casablanca to an Amazigh family from the Souss region, Maysoun Bouga still treasures the priceless moments of her childhood spent with her grandparents. They spoke Tachelhit—she didn't—but she listened carefully, absorbing the stories they shared in the language of their ancestors. Today, those very stories have resurfaced in her life through her research and creative projects. Now based in Byron Bay, a coastal town in southeastern Australia, Maysoun is on a mission to rediscover Moroccan folktales. She does so to honor her culture, reconnect with her grandparents' legacy, and finally learn Tachelhit—a language she has always longed to speak. «I grew up in Morocco with a deep connection to my family, especially my grandparents», she told Yabiladi. «My mom speaks Amazigh, and I was lucky to grow up hearing her converse with her sisters and to listen to stories from my grandma and granddad, who lived with us». Applied theater to experience, learn and evolve But Maysoun's love for these stories only grew stronger after she settled in Australia. It was while practicing Applied Theater—a discipline that uses theatrical practices for education and community development—that this passion took shape. After graduating high school in Morocco, Maysoun moved to Australia to study psychology and anthropology. She also developed an interest in human resources. That combination of interests ultimately led her to Applied Theater, which, she found, tied all her passions together. «I came across theater by chance», she recalled. A friend had returned from a conference and started a company centered on applied theater. «I joined her in co-creating the company, and it brought together all my interests: psychology, group work, anthropology, and culture. I realized it was a powerful tool». Since 2007, Maysoun has practiced Applied Theater, using it to help groups, individuals, companies, and NGOs develop skills and tools through creative, experiential learning. One format she often uses involves guiding participants through a program that culminates in a play performed for an audience with similar interests. «The play ends in a crisis—left unresolved—we invite the audience to step in, to intervene on stage where they think a different reaction might have led to a resolution». «That's just one example», she said, «but all in all, I create experiential learning journeys where people act, reflect, learn, adapt, and grow as a group. It depends on what the group wants to explore. It's all about using theater to create meaningful learning experiences». Rediscovering Amazigh culture Her journey into theater and creativity eventually reconnected her with her heritage—and with a deep frustration: not being able to speak the mother tongue of her beloved grandparents. «That whole journey opened up a new world for me», she said, recalling powerful encounters with First Nations artists in Australia. «Those meetings reminded me of my own ancient culture. That ancient spoke to me», she said. That calling prompted her to focus on her roots—specifically on the folktales and oral traditions her grandparents used to tell in Tachelhit. «I came up with the idea of going on a journey with my mother to rediscover folktales from our region and from Amazigh culture in general—especially in places like Imi Ntanout and Taroudant». That's how storytelling became central to her life. «The idea actually came to me back in 2012—a dream of traveling with my mother into the mountains to collect stories. I had to wait until recently to begin the project». From Sunrise to Sunset What started as a personal exploration has now evolved into a much bigger initiative—one that bridges Moroccan and Australian cultures. This culminated in a cross-cultural art project called Sunrise to Sunset. Described by Maysoun, its creator and producer, as a vibrant mix of narrative, melody, and movement, «The project is a dialogue of stories, dance, and music between the two cultures», she explained. It marks the end of a creative residency which lasted two weeks in Morocco—the project's first phase—during which the team explored cultural exchange through art. «We looked at what we had, exchanged ideas, and reflected on cultural dialogue. The show is a presentation of the work we've done during this first meeting», she explained. In the show, Maysoun will be joined by Warren Clements, a Wakaman man from northern Queensland and a celebrated dancer, actor, and cultural educator. Benjamin Walsh, a world-renowned percussionist and genre-defying composer, curates the project's soundscape. Representing Morocco is Redouane Bentaleb, an Amazigh storyteller and musician who embodies the soul of Amazigh culture. The dialogue throughout the show will be multilingual. «It will be in French and English, with some Amazigh too—but mostly French and English», she noted. The show will take place on Thursday, June 12, in Casablanca. Maysoun has big dreams for the project, which she hopes to develop further into a full theater piece. «The plan is to tour it, and of course Morocco is on the map—we'd love to bring it to different cities». The title Sunrise to Sunset is symbolic. «I live on the East Coast of Australia, where I often watch the sunrise—it's one of the first places in the country to see the sun. And sunset—well, Morocco is the land of the setting sun, the Maghreb. I've watched so many beautiful sunsets there. The show is really an homage to my culture, to Amazigh heritage, to Morocco—and to Australia».

Fraxinet, a 10th-century Muslim trading post in Saint-Tropez
In the 10th century, Saint-Tropez was home to a Saracen trading post following a Muslim conquest around 890, likely led by sailors from Al-Andalus. This historic land, situated at the crossroads of maritime, commercial, and military routes in the Mediterranean, witnessed the evolution of civilizations due to its proximity to Sardinia and Sicily. Over the centuries, the French commune absorbed these influences. At the turn of the 9th century, the territory experienced Muslim raids and incursions in southern Europe, where Al-Andalus and the Italian islands endured centuries of caliphal rule. Fraxinet emerged amid numerous armed power struggles. Alongside the Three Sacks of Rome in 846, 849, and 876, raids targeted Provence, including attacks on Marseille in 838 and 846. Simultaneously, Muslim forces established bases in Camargue (France), Bari (Italy), and Crete (Greece) during the 9th century. More than a corsair outpost in Saint-Tropez, Fraxinet became a significant economic and political landmark, though historical records remain scarce. Some accounts link Saint-Tropez's Muslim past to these incursions, leaving a lasting mark on the commune. The 10th-century Muslim chronicler and geographer Mohammed Abul-Kassem ibn Hawqal mentioned Fraxinet in his travel writings. Known for his journeys between 943 and 969, the author of the famous Configuration of the Earth describes an island at the Rhône's mouth, near Al-Andalus, reminiscent of the Balearics. An Autonomous Muslim Stronghold Historian and chronicler Ibn Hayyan al-Qurtubi (987–1076) refers to an Umayyad «peace treaty» sent around 941 to affiliated territories, including Fraxinet's leader. According to this scholar from Córdoba, the border area primarily served a military function, acting as a fortress and launch point for offensives. Despite its distance from the caliphal center in Al-Andalus, the trading post was managed by leaders who maintained significant autonomy. This collection of historical clues suggests that Fraxinet's warriors founded their Saint-Tropez outpost for defensive purposes, reinforcing border Muslim raids. Political instability in the region facilitated the rapid conquest of southern European lands. Additionally, the fertile land fostered agricultural and economic prosperity, even as the Fatimids (909–1171) rose in Egypt, North Africa's Ifriqiya, and Sicily before the Norman conquest in the 11th century. In The Saracens of Fraxinetum in the 10th Century, published in Islamic Lands and the Latin World (Presses universitaires de Lyon, 2000), medieval historians Pierre Guichard and Denis Menjot confirm these insights. They note that «Provence suffered from Saracen raids since the mid-9th century, similar to southern Italy». However, these repeated attacks mainly affected the western region and did not quickly lead to lasting settlement. The second wave of invasions, however, brought about deeper changes «for nearly a century», as testified by Bishop Liutprand of Cremona (920–971/972), cited by the authors. «A familiar of Otto I, whom he served as ambassador to Byzantium, Liutprand lived for a long time at the court of Hugh of Arles and had good knowledge of Provence. In his main work, dedicated to Bishop Recemund of Elvira, the Antapodosis ('Reprisals' against Berengar II of Ivrea), he recounts the events in Provence from the Saracens' arrival to their final defeat», the researchers explain. Emperor Otto unsuccessfully negotiated with the Caliph of Córdoba to recall the Muslim bands. The capture of Abbot Mayeul of Cluny at the Great Saint Bernard Pass provoked a strong reaction, leading to military operations — primarily by Count Guillem of Provence against Fraxinetum — resulting in the Saracens' final expulsion in 972». In Fraxinetum: An Islamic Frontier State in Tenth-Century Provence, Mohammad Ballan describes the Andalusian colony of Fraxinet as an «Islamic frontier entity» developed into a significant economic and military center in Provence. Serving as an advanced post of Al-Andalus, Fraxinet had the dual purpose of defense and community enrichment, as Ibn Hawqal described. Thus, the Saracens proclaimed their emirate of Fraxinet to invest in the territory and use it as a base for larger-scale northern military expeditions. Notably, they controlled western Alpine passes and dominated trade routes between France, Italy, and Switzerland, parts of which were under their control. Between 890 and 972, the Saint-Tropez peninsula was an Arab-Muslim colony known as Jabal al-Qilâl («Mountain of Peaks«) or Farakhshinit — the Arabized form of the Gallo-Roman fraxinetu. The region was governed by Nasr ibn Ahmad, appointed caïd around 940. The Saracens were definitively expelled in 976 by Guillaume I, Count of Provence (960–993) and Lord of Grimaud, who fortified the city by building a tower on the current site of the Suffren in 980.
