The Sandal Scandal: Of Birks, Crocs, and Fakes In Focus podcast
First it was the crocs, the uniquely shaped perforated sandals. The American company which makes them, Crocs Inc., is pursuing legal action against several Indian companies, including the likes of Bata and Liberty, for copying their visual design and 'passing off' their product as crocs.
Then we have the case of Italian luxury fashion brand Prada, which has been facing heat in India after it showcased men's 'Toe-ring Sandals' that looked a lot like Kolhapuri chappals.
And now we have the German sandal brand Birkenstock getting court approval to inspect factories in India and seize counterfeit Birkenstock sandals.
Are these three cases comparable? How exactly does the copyright regime work in the fashion world? And why are Indians crazy for Birkenstocks?
In Part 1, we look at the legal battles. In Part 2, we explore how footwear became a cultural and fashion phenomenon.
Host: G Sampath
Guests: Shantanu Sood, a lawyer who specialises in intellectual property-related issues, and Rosella Stephen, editor of The Hindu's Sunday Magazine.

Ed Sheeran lookalike fools Indian fans, they call him ‘humble'; real one is rocking Oslo jamming with Sigrid
'Humble' Ed Sheeran, a lookalike of the singer, who gets great reviews for mingling with crowds who don't know he's not real, made an appearance at the Old Trafford Test match. Test Match Special and Barmy Army also registered his presence on their official accounts. The British singing sensation is a genuine fan of Test cricket and has attended matches at Old Trafford. But on Sunday, even as Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja went about resurrecting hopes of a draw on a pitch that has seen many centuries, the crowds managed to entertain themselves posing for selfies with the fake Sheeran. England Cricket, official ECB handle tweeted, 'Always pleasure to have @EdSheetan with us at cricket', as the figure with no tattoos (the biggest giveaway of unauthenticity), dressed in fuschia pink with glares, posed with mostly Indian ethnicity fans. Always a pleasure to have @EdSheeran with us at the cricket 😅 — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 27, 2025 The Castle on the Hill, I don't care and Shape of You songmaker is a cricket fan but was performing right that moment with Norwegian star Sigrid in Oslo and his doppelganger did not have tattoos Most in the crowd knew that the redheaded TY Jones, a bonafide doppelganger, is not Ed Sheeran. But selfies don't sing, so even with his hair not messy and the individual not being the Shape of Him, fans happily amused themselves posing with the gallivanting lookalike who was Thinking Out Loud. A celebrity lookalike agency rents out artists, and Jones is one such. He even sported a accreditation. In April, the lookalike turned up at a nightclub but didn't know words to all Sheeran songs, and spent the evening avoiding the real Justin Bieber so as not to be caught. More recently an Arijit Singh lookalike created a parody video of his collaboration with Sheeran, as reported by Express. Sheeran earlier in the year had a Bhangra Collab on the Kapil Sharma show, and the Indian drum beats have reverberated, be it with Wonderwall or a Sheeran single. There was also a Fernando Alonso flukealike immersed in watching the match, who was not aware of his likeness with the F1 driver.

Jaya Bachchan once said she would have 'slapped' Shah Rukh Khan after Aishwarya Rai fallout
Jaya Bachchan Once Expressed Anger at Shah Rukh Khan After Rift With Aishwarya Rai Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai, two of Indian cinema's most celebrated figures, delivered memorable performances together in films like Josh, Mohabbatein, and Devdas. Their on-screen pairing was a favourite among audiences, but their off-screen equation took a drastic turn in the early 2000s. Despite their successful collaborations, a professional rift led to Aishwarya being removed from multiple films they were initially set to do together. According to reports cited by News18 and others, the reasons for this fallout were never clearly stated. Aishwarya herself later confirmed that she was dropped from several projects that originally featured Shah Rukh Khan, including Chalte Chalte and Veer Zaara. These sudden exclusions had a noticeable impact on her career at the time. While Shah Rukh later apologised, the rapport between them was never fully restored. The fallout between Shah Rukh and Aishwarya didn't just remain a professional matter. It drew the attention of Aishwarya's family as well, particularly her mother-in-law, Jaya Bachchan, who had always shared a warm rapport with Shah Rukh. In a 2008 interview with People magazine, Jaya was asked if she still held any resentment toward Shah Rukh over what happened. She admitted she did, and said that although she hadn't yet spoken to him about it, she intended to. She added that had he been at her home at the time, she would have slapped him — just as she would have done if it had been her own son. Despite the anger, she also made it clear that she felt a deep emotional bond with Shah Rukh and admitted to having a personal fondness for him. The strain in their relationship was also evident during Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan's wedding in 2007, where Shah Rukh was noticeably absent. At the time, it was reported that the two actors were still not on speaking terms following the Chalte Chalte controversy. As per News18, Jaya Bachchan addressed this directly, pointing out that if it had been possible to invite Shah Rukh without upsetting family dynamics, the wedding date itself would have been changed. Though the fallout left visible cracks, the passage of time brought some healing. Shah Rukh's apology, along with a gradual softening of tensions, helped bridge the distance.
