Greg Cote Show: What Spelling Bees say about parenting, doubling-down on McOverrated, hitchhiking & more
Lots going on in the latest Greg Cote Show podcast Episode #273, out now, but two topics rise highest and tussle for the top of the marquee: ▪ The Scripps National Spelling Bee celebrates its 100th year and we celebrate the latest champion (a 13-year-old boy from Texas) and his winning word. I discuss my own past as a former elementary-school bee champ. And we mull over how children of Indian-American descent have come to dominate the national bee because they are teaching their kids intellectual pursuits while so-called 'American' parents steer the offspring to sports and stick a laptop in their hands to keep them quiet. The bee talk leads us to a video ranking of animal intelligence, dumbest to smartest, relative to humans. ▪ We preview the upcoming Florida Panthers-Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup Final rematch: I stir the pot on Connor 'McOverrated' and we brainstorm derogatory nicknames for his sidekick Leon Draisaitl. Also, the rarity of championship rematches, our predictions on who'll win and more. This is our 273rd episode overall and 22nd of 2025 and we welcome you back as always. Also on the new show: ▪ Me on growing up in the hitchhiking era. Which leads us to a Finger Hall of Fame -- and my unexpected first-ballot nominee. ▪ How Jumpin' Charlie delayed recording of latest episode. ▪ Chris' 'Intelligence Few Minutes.' ▪ Le Batard's unusual praise of our episode last week. ▪ Chris analyzes the 'Slow Children At Play' road signs. ▪ Video of Greg's new racehorse, Isla Grande, boarding an Argentina-to-Miami flight. ▪ Chris' (alleged) disgusting behavior with a Blizzard spoon. ▪ The under-analyzed rivalry of Bullshit vs. Horseshit. ▪ Gracelin's gymnastics performance. ▪ Is a Grandfather vs. Granddaughter Olympics in the works? ▪ New Dad Jokes, Three Facts, Jack!, Gripe of Wrath and the Top 20 Herbs Countdown -- No. 7! There's all of this and more in our new GCS #273. Aside from occasional bonus episodes, a new show drops every Monday morning at 7 on Apple Podcasts, Spotify — wherever you pod, including at Find our entire show catalog with all 273 episodes HERE. (We also simulcast on Sirius XM radio Mondays from 5 to 6 p.m.) Our podcast debuted in March 2020 just as the pandemic hit. (Coincidence; don't blame us). We thank you all, our pod family, for your great and growing support. Please continue to listen, rate, review, follow and tell all your friends and family, too! After Six Years, Overwatch 2 Finally Acknowledges Soldier: 76's Gay Ex-Boyfriend Again
Way back in 2019, Blizzard confirmed that Soldier: 76, Overwatch's grumpy grandpa, is a member of the queer community. The titular organization's ex-commander, whose real name is Jack Morrison, is gay and was involved with a man named Vincent many years before the events of the game. This was revealed in a short story called 'Bastet,' which focused on him and Ana, who were close comrades during the group's heyday. In the story, Morrison reflects on his old flame, and it sounds like the two split because Soldier was so dedicated to the group's cause that it put a strain on their relationship. But the game itself hasn't really acknowledged Soldier's long-lost love outside of a spray of the two giving each other the Christian Side Hug. That's finally changed in Overwatch 2's 16th season. Blizzard periodically adds new pre-match interactions between its heroes with the start of a new season and in the big mid-season patch, often spotlighting a handful of characters with each new wave, rather than adding something for all 40+ heroes at once. And with season 16, which started late last month, Soldier: 76 is one of the characters to benefit. The latest wave includes a conversation with Baptiste, who playfully asks if anyone has ever 'captured the heart' of the grizzled vigilante. Soldier doesn't mention Vincent by name, but does say there was someone, and laments that he hasn't seen him 'in a long time.' Baptiste apologizes for bringing up bad memories, but Soldier says that 'these days, that's all [he's] got.' Shot me right through the heart, Blizzard. Thanks for that. tiktok-7507005230454820138 It's been so long since we first learned that Vincent existed, some folks in the comments of videos featuring the conversation are assuming it's about Reaper, with whom fans have shipped Soldier: 76 for almost a decade. For several years, Overwatch 2's handling of queer themes existed in a weird place of plausible deniability. It came up in external media, but was rarely acknowledged in the game itself, to the point where you could push payloads without ever once having to consider that Tracer was a lesbian or Soldier was gay. In recent years, Blizzard has made a pretty concentrated effort to be more explicit about all the LGBTQ+ characters on its roster. 2023 was a real turning point for the game, starting with the release of Lifeweaver who was confirmed as a pansexual character at launch. In June, the game got its first Pride event, which confirmed a few more queer heroes, added Pride flag cosmetics, and updated the Midtown map to cover it in rainbows for a Pride parade. Venture, the shooter's first non-binary hero, was announced at Blizzcon that year and released in the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Dunkin' launches surprising summer beverages to outdo Starbucks
Nowadays, there seem to be fewer uniquely creative ideas, especially in the food industry. Since their inception, every fast-food chain, from Starbucks to McDonald's, has tried to outdo competitors by creating innovative menu items and products that set them apart. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Now many chains have also begun to take ideas from one another, leading some to cross the fine line between innovation and imitation. Related: McDonald's to close all its CosMc's experimental spin-off locations Recently, beverages have become a top focus in the food industry, leading them to bank on this trend by investing time and resources in developing unique beverages that often overlap with each other. In just the last few weeks, McDonald's (MCD) launched a housemade lemonade, which Chick-fil-A has offered for years, and Wendy's (WEN) introduced its Frosty Swirls and Fusions, which could be compared to Dairy Queen's Blizzard and McDonald's McFlurry. Image source:This week, the second part of Dunkin's Summer 2025 menu was leaked, surprising fans with many unexpected new and returning menu additions set to drop beginning June 25 and remain available at all participating locations nationwide until August 19, as reported by @markie_devo on Instagram. As the post claims, Dunkin' is returning two drinks to its Energy Mixology lineup: the Cherry Berry Twist and the Peach Cherry Twist. The coffee chain is also introducing a new Refresher, the Strawberry Dragonfruit Dunkin' Refresher, made with oatmilk and topped with sweet cold foam. Although it might be new to Dunkin's menu, Starbucks fans would say it's very similar to the coffee chain's Dragonfruit Drink, and the same goes for its entire lineup of Refreshers. Related: Starbucks faces huge new rival To make this summer a bit cooler, Dunkin' is returning its Melted Ice Cream Frozen Coffees with a lineup that will include the Cookie Dough Frozen Coffee, Mint Chocolate Chip Frozen Coffee, and Butter Pecan Frozen Coffee. For all the matcha lovers out there, Dunkin' will also begin implementing a new process for crafting its Iced Matcha Lattes, which Devo claims will include the Island Oasis or Vitamix. Although this may not be a new menu item, Dunkin's change coincidentally follows Starbucks's recent replacement of its sweetened matcha with a new, unsweetened version in response to consumer feedback and demand. Loyalty is everything to many fast-food chains, so Dunkin' is dropping new in-app exclusive beverages to make its members feel extra special this summer. These include the Mint Chocolate Chip Signature Latte and Cookie Dough Cold Foam Iced Coffee. These are speculated to become available from July 23 to Aug 19, according to Devo.
