Staff to move legally against Thiruvithamcore society panel over PF withdrawal

Thiruvananthapuram: Amid the ongoing probe into the irregularities surrounding Thiruvithamcore Cooperative Society, staff members are set to move legally against the society's administrative panel for withdrawing over Rs 50 lakh from the PF account without their consent. The staff alleged that they were threatened to take voluntary retirement to avoid receiving several benefits. They have not received their salaries for the past few months. Even when the salaries were paid, the staff were restricted from withdrawing more than Rs 8,000 each month. Their gratuity, PF contributions, etc, were also not paid for the past few months. When contacted the panel members termed the measures as necessary to overcome the financial crisis of the society. "There were 27 staff at the society, some of them left the organisation due to these issues. Now we have 19 staff. We were threatened to take voluntary retirement and payment-free long leaves. It was without our consent that the huge amount was withdrawn from the PF account. We filed written complaints against it to the registrar, deputy registrar and joint registrar, but nothing has been done yet. Now we are planning to approach a court against it," said a staff member. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Affiliate Marketing Can Boost Your Income TheDaddest Undo The panel, which was ruled by its current president M S Kumar, vice-president S Ganapathy Potty and board members, was accused of cheating crores of rupees from depositors. While the probe was ongoing, the accused held elections with the consent of the cooperative department and returned to power with a promise that they would bring society out of crisis. "The society had four branches before, and now we have just one. We don't need this many staff now and restrictions are in place to overcome the crisis. The staff received very good salaries when society was in a good position, now they have to cooperate in this predicament. They all will get their benefits once the crisis is over," said the president. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Cops in slumber, scrap thieves targeting construction material make hay in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Construction sites on the city's periphery have a new-found problem: Scrap thieves. The miscreants are not the usual fly-by-night thieves, but a well-organised gang that uses elderly men as scouts to pull off daring and early-morning heists. The operation of the gang is simple: An elderly man will casually survey sites with little or no security. Once he spots a soft target, he will tip off the gang. Hours later, usually between 2.30am and 4am, a group posing as construction workers will arrive in a goods van and load up construction material before fleeing. According to police sources, over 15 such thefts have been reported in recent weeks in areas like Dasarahalli, Bagalagunte, Peenya, Soladevanahalli and Madanayakanahalli. While prices of construction materials have skyrocketed and thieves find it easy to dispose of stolen goods, for police, these crimes are still low priority and the lost goods are not of high value. Mithun, a scaffolding supplier from Peenya, recounted his loss: "I lost 240 scaffolding sheets in one night. In 10 days, my losses hit Rs 11.5 lakh. We started monitoring the site and noticed an elderly man hanging around. One night, a tempo arrived and in minutes, everything was gone. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The 5 Books Warren Buffett Recommends You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo We caught the man, but he acted drunk and clueless when we handed him over to police." Despite CCTV footage and growing complaints, little action has followed. A partial breakthrough happened Wednesday when Bagalagunte police recovered 130 stolen sheets from an interstate scrap racket in a pre-dawn raid — but no FIRs were filed and no arrests made. Contractors and site owners are now left to fend for themselves. "We're forced to guard half-built buildings like fortresses," said Ramamurthy, a contractor from Dasarahalli. "These gangs are fearless and getting bolder. It has become a headache to even protect half-built structures," he added.
