
UAE Food Bank's food aid initiatives reached 28.9mln beneficiaries worldwide in 2024
The UAE Food Bank (EFB), an initiative under the umbrella of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives (MBRGI), has released its annual data for 2024, reporting that its food aid initiatives reached 28.9 million beneficiaries worldwide. This marks a 55% increase from 2023, exceeding its performance targets and strategic objectives by over 100%.
The UAE Food Bank also made significant progress in its environmental sustainability goals, successfully diverting 5,466 tonnes of food from landfill. This initiative contributed to reducing environmental pollution and emissions associated with food waste, supporting the UAE's target of reducing food waste by 30% by 2027. By ensuring surplus food is redistributed effectively, the UAE Food Bank continues to promote responsible food management practices that align with global sustainability objectives.
The Bank continued to strengthen its global partnerships through 30 strategic agreements and memoranda of understanding with government entities, humanitarian organisations, and food industry leaders. These collaborations helped expand the Food Bank's reach and impact, reinforcing its role as a key player in food security initiatives around the world.
As part of its emergency humanitarian relief efforts, the UAE Food Bank delivered 166.7 tonnes of food to the Emirates Red Crescent, with the bulk of the supplies being sent to Gaza during Ramadan under the 'Compassion for Gaza' campaign. In addition, 12.08 tonnes of food aid were sent to Lebanon under the 'UAE With You, Lebanon' campaign, reinforcing the UAE's commitment to international humanitarian relief efforts.
The number of donors from local and international food organisations also grew to 1,214, reflecting a 52% increase in participation. Alongside its direct food assistance efforts, the Food Bank implemented 157 awareness programmes, which engaged 4,357 participants in activities designed to promote responsible food consumption, food waste reduction, and sustainability. Significantly expanding its programme in 2024, the Food Bank engaged approximately 5,000 volunteers and active participants to support surplus food management and distribution initiatives aimed at bringing more beneficiaries under its umbrella.
Manal Obaid bin Yaroof, Head of the Executive Team of the UAE Food Bank, highlighted the importance of the Bank's ongoing efforts in furthering humanitarian and charitable work, noting that its achievements reflect the philanthropic vision of the UAE's leadership. She stated that the Bank operates under the directives and continuous guidance of Her Highness Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Supreme Chairperson of the UAE Food Bank, ensuring that critical food aid unfailingly reaches those in need worldwide. She emphasised that the organisation remains committed to managing surplus food and reducing food waste in a structured and sustainable manner, in line with its long-term humanitarian objectives.
The UAE Food Bank provided food aid in response to a variety of global humanitarian situations through 2024. Its relief consignments included redistributed surplus food, cooked meals donated by food establishments, and food parcels containing essential items. By the end of December 2024, the total volume of food distributed reached 16,923 tonnes, with shipped aid including everything from vegetables, fruits, dairy products and meat to grains, pasta, and grocery staples.
Throughout the year, the UAE Food Bank played an active role in several high-profile industry and humanitarian events. It participated in major industry conferences, including the Dubai International Food Safety Conference, Gulfood Manufacturing, and the World Government Summit (WGS). It also took part in several national-level humanitarian initiatives, such as the Suqia Water Initiative, the Eid Al Adha Initiative, and the Billion Meals Endowment.
The UAE Food Bank continues to operate according to its 2023-2027 strategic plan, which focuses on expanding humanitarian initiatives, forming partnerships to manage surplus food, and supporting national and international food security strategies. The Bank is actively working with Al Naama, government agencies, and other food banks around the world to enhance surplus food management and to provide direct food aid to those in need.
Since its establishment in 2017, the UAE Food Bank has distributed more than 96 million meals, conducted 524 events, workshops, and campaigns, and built a strong network of 262 strategic partners. In addition, it has signed five memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with regional food banks, further strengthening its role as a leader in humanitarian food aid and surplus food management.
With a clear vision for the future, the UAE Food Bank remains committed to expanding its global reach, reducing food wastage in every form, and ensuring that food is delivered efficiently to those who need it most, both in the UAE and around the world.

United Arab Bank launches strategic Rights Issue to raise up to Dhs 1.03 billion
United Arab Bank PJSC (UAB), listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) announced that it proposes to increase its issued share capital by an amount up to Dhs1,031,275,325 (one billion thirty-one million two hundred seventy-five thousand three hundred twenty-five dirhams) from Dhs2,062,550,649 (two billion sixty-two million five hundred fifty thousand six hundred forty-nine dirhams) up to Dhs3,093,825,974 (three billion ninety-three million eight hundred twenty-five thousand nine hundred seventy-four dirhams) by way of the Rights Issue offered to the existing shareholders of the Bank. Further, United Arab Bank has published an invitation to its shareholders (the "Invitation") to subscribe for New Shares. Frequently asked questions relating to the Rights Issue will be made available on UAB's website ( on or around today's date. The New Shares will be issued at an issue price of Dhs1 per New Share (the "Issue Price"). The terms and launch of the Rights Issue were approved by the UAB's General Assembly Meeting held on 6th March 2025, following the approval of the Board of Directors of the Bank held on 4th February 2025. The necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained for this transaction. United Arab Bank intends to use the net proceeds raised from the Rights Issue to strengthen its capital base and to support future growth of the business of United Arab Bank. The holders of Rights, which includes shareholders of United Arab Bank and any persons who purchased Rights during the Rights Trading Period (the "Eligible Persons"), will be entitled to exercise their Rights to subscribe for New Shares at the Issue Price commencing on 4th July 2025 and ending on 17th July 2025. The New Shares will be allocated to Eligible Persons on 24 July 2025. Refunds will be given to Eligible Persons, who did not receive the number of New Shares that they subscribed for, on or around 24th July 2025. Secrets of success for international brands in the Middle East
The Middle East has become a hot bed for businesses looking to expand into new markets and tap into a consumer set open to new brands and experiences. A young and vibrant population, riding a wave of positivity, alongside governments with money and intent to invest in building infrastructure and opportunities makes it an exciting market to move into. But as global brands turn their attention to this region they must do so with an awareness of cultural nuances. Their approach to marketing and brand building cannot be a carbon copy of other territories – brands must adapt their messaging, trajectory and ambition. Putting customers at the centre of activity is a golden rule for brands no matter where they operate. And so, applying that tenet to the Middle East means respecting local values and attitudes – and demonstrating that through the brand's storytelling. Beyond advertising There are lessons to be learned from some of the biggest global brands that have successfully moved into the region. Take Nike for example – the global sportswear brand has not only featured athletes from the region in its advertising but also considered them in its product line. Nike's marketing campaigns in the region often feature local athletes and stories, building aspirational narratives that people can easily connect with. But it went one step further with the launch of the Nike Pro Hijab in 2017, catering to Muslim female athletes. This was a major milestone as it anchored the brand with an inclusion message that resonated deeply across the region. It demonstrated a genuine understanding and respect for the local culture and empowered women within it. IKEA has similarly taken a thorough approach to adapting for the local market. The furniture brand can teach us all some things about how to craft a 'glocal' strategy. In particular, cultural sensitivity is a must. While its core product range is consistent across the globe, IKEA still makes subtle but significant adjustments to fulfill local needs. These include larger furniture pieces and tailored options to accommodate bigger living spaces and family gatherings. It also makes sure that the selection of materials can accommodate the region's hot and dry climate. And in a similar way to many luxury brands, IKEA creates specific collections and campaigns for Ramadan and Eid. Adapting products and services to the local customer base and using local talent in advertising are important but if this is as far as it goes the risk is that cultural sensibility is a veneer rather than a strategy. The best practice adopted by some brands it to establish significant bases in the region and become local employers. Pepsi has a long history of success in the Middle East, with high market penetration. This is due to strong local investments in facilities, employing thousands of locals and sourcing within the region. PepsiCo is perceived as a global brand that wants more than just to sell products; it wants to be an integral part of the local economy and therefore, the local community. It has also invested in local R&D centres to tailor its product portfolio to local consumer preferences. Mistakes – some brands have made a few Some brands have come unstuck because they have expanded into the region thinking like westerners. Campaigns must appeal to an audience which admires global brands but is also fiercely proud of its local heritage, culture and values. Public sentiment can quickly shift and with it, loyalty. So, any brand serious about making its mark must monitor public sentiment. Social media is a useful tool here. And interestingly, one of the most successful brands in the Middle East – TikTok – is tapping its largest audience, the youth. TikTok has made huge efforts to connect with local influencers. The platform understood the rise of local trends and the importance of fostering local communities. The introduction of TikTok Shops has been a game-changer, especially in the Gulf's booming e-commerce market. TikTok has shown that it cares and nurtures the creative community in the Gulf. It ran the Creator Hub programme to discover and support new creators. Course correction for brands Entering new regions is not easy and even the most successful of brands can make missteps. When that happens, change. Course correction is not an admission of failure; it's a sign of responsiveness and strategic depth. Coming into the region with an open mindset will go a long way. When brands reposition to better reflect local aspirations, values or lifestyles they are more likely to be welcomed. Whether introducing modest fashion lines, halal food certification or Arabic language packaging, modifying products will help make global brands feel part of the region. Global brands need to be on the ground, employing local people and working with local partners and influencers – and then they will find the right tone of voice and approach. Sharjah Islamic Bank strengthens global standing with successful pricing of $500 million perpetual sukuk
Sharjah Islamic Bank (SIB) has successfully priced US$ 500 million perpetual Additional Tier 1 sukuk with a fixed profit rate of 6.125 percent and a six-year non-call period, making a mark as the tightest set AT1 Issuance in 2025 globally. With a reset spread of 195.6 bps, the issuance also marks a reduction in the Spread achieved in 2019 by 125.7 bps. The issuance drew robust and was oversubscribed by more than 2.0x from a wide spectrum of investors across the GCC, Europe, and Asia, reflecting the high level of confidence the Bank enjoys among international financial institutions and investment funds. This transaction further demonstrates the Bank's strategic use of capital markets as an effective tool to support its growth trajectory and strengthen its capital base. Mohamed Abdalla, CEO of Sharjah Islamic Bank, commented, 'This latest sukuk issuance reflects the continued success of our strategy to leverage capital markets in supporting the SIB's financial position and long-term expansion. The transaction attracted exceptional interest, far exceeding expectations, and securing demand from a highly diversified investor base. This latest issuance builds on the Bank's successful track record in the sukuk space. In February 2025, SIB priced a US$500 million sukuk at a profit rate of 5.20 percent, representing a margin of 89.8 basis points over 5-year US Treasury notes. Despite market volatility, that deal attracted over US$1.7 billion in orders, more than 3.4 times the issuance size, with strong participation from investors across the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and Asia. The joint lead managers and bookrunners for the issuance were: Arqaam Capital, Dubai Islamic Bank, Emirates NBD Capital, First Abu Dhabi Bank, HSBC, Kamco Invest, Mashreq Bank, and Standard Chartered Bank. This transaction forms part of a broader capital strategy aimed at strengthening SIB's capital structure, supporting business expansion across key markets while maintaining a commitment to financial governance, resilience, and sustainability.
