Brevis' record-breaking century for South Africa ends Australia's 9-match winning streak in T20s

Brevis' record-breaking century for South Africa ends Australia's 9-match winning streak in T20s

DARWIN, Australia (AP) — Dewald Brevis smacked a record T20 century to help South Africa end the nine-match winning streak of Australia's cricketers as a 53-run victory on Tuesday levelled the three-match series at 1-1.
The 22-year-old Brevis bludgeoned eight sixes and 12 fours in his breath-taking 125 not out off 56 balls to surpass Faf du Plessis' South Africa record of 119, made against the West Indies in 2015.
Brevis displayed an extraordinary range of shots all around the wicket to propel South Africa to 218-7, after Australia captain Mitchell Marsh had won the toss and elected to field on the same wicket where his team had successfully defended 178 two days before.
Australia's top-order batters briefly had a crack at the steep target with Tim David scoring a robust 50 off 24 balls. But once he perished in the 10th over, the wheels came off as the home team was bowled out for 165 in 17.4 overs.
'I have not really thought about it (the record), but extremely grateful,' Brevis said after receiving his player of the match award. 'Just happy we won today, great to be out here on the winning side.'
Another South African youngster, Kwena Maphaka (3-57), followed his four-wicket haul in the first game by removing big-hitters Cameron Green (9), Glenn Maxwell (16) and Mitchell Owen (8).
South Africa also shrugged off the dew at the venue and held onto some brilliant catches with Nqabayomzi Peter, one of the two changes the visitors made from the first game, holding onto a spectacular low catch at mid-wicket to dismiss Green in Maphaka's first over.
In sharp contrast, Australia was scrappy in the field.
Substitute fielder Matthew Kuhnemann dropped Brevis soon after the power-hitter had completed his half century off 25 balls. The ball burst through his hands on the long-on boundary, much to the disappointment of bowler Maxwell.
Maxwell, who finished with 2-44, had earlier seen Adam Zampa drop a skier off Lhuan-dre Pretorius in the powerplay.
Despite losing three quick wickets, Brevis didn't hold back in a 126-run fourth-wicket stand with Tristan Stubbs, who contributed 31 off 22 balls.
Brevis pummelled spinners Zampa (1-46) and Maxwell soon after getting his life on 56. He also took charge against Josh Hazlewood (1-56) in the second half of the innings as he completed his second fifty off just 16 balls.
Zampa broke the century partnership by having Stubbs caught at backward point
Australia rallied to take four wickets at the end, but Brevis had done enough damage by that time to give South Africa its imposing total.
Marsh, whose side beat West Indies 5-0 after chasing successfully in all five games in the preceding series, praised Brevis.
'He is a young, powerful man,' Marsh said. 'An upcoming player in international cricket and well played to him. Chasing that down was going to be tough. We needed a few partnerships early and could not do that.'
The final game will be played on Saturday before the teams compete in a three-match ODI series.

West Indies Claim First ODI-Series Win Over Pakistan In 34 Years

On Tuesday, the West Indies men's cricket team celebrated a bilateral ODI series victory against Pakistan, a triumph that they had not experienced since 1991. The 34-year-old losing streak ended with a massive win for the Windies in Tarouba. In a series decider on Tuesday, Pakistan suffered one of the toughest losses in ODI history, with West Indies sealing the series with a 2-1 win. The match saw captain Shai Hope score an undefeated century, followed by West Indies' top-notch efforts in the second innings. As a result, the men in green were unable to chase a score of 295 runs and got bowled out at just 92 runs. Hope, who is quietly turning tables, helping the team to resurge on the international level, paved the way for the West Indies with an undefeated score of 120 runs. The team struggled with the tricky pitch and had scored less than 200 runs by the start of the 44th over. However, Hope soon changed the pace of the innings by hitting multiple boundaries against Mohammad Nawaz. In the following overs, Pakistan completely lost "their momentum," with Hope (120-94) and Justin Greaves (43-24) exceeding the expected score of 250 runs. In the last deliveries, the Windies continued to add cushion numbers, posting a total score of 294 runs on the scoreboard. "We had Ayub and Salman bowling. We thought Abrar would come and bowl. But Hope batted well and hence he didn't complete his overs," Pakistan's ODI captain Mohammad Rizwan stated The team's trouble didn't stop there. Facing a massive 202-run defeat right after losing the second ODI in the series crushed Pakistan's hopes yet again. The men in green were dominated from the start and eventually succumbed to the pressure, unable to even cross the 100-run mark. They lost their top batters in the first three overs for scores of zero, including Rizwan. Babar Azam, hopeful to turn the game back around, got dismissed at nine runs by 23-year-old Jayden Seales, who continued to be a force to be reckoned with on an already tricky pitch. By the 20th over, Pakistan lost six wickets and the following overs continued to collapse the remaining order. Eventually, in 29.2 overs, Seales (6-18) and Gudakesh Motie (2-37) forced Pakistan to conclude their innings with just 92 runs. Salman Agha was the top scorer for the Pakistani side (30-49). "It was very important for us to go deep. You want to set the tone in the power play. I wanted to give the team the best finish as well. We have struggled at times. We had 270-280 in mind. We had wickets in mind, wanted to capitalize," Hope stated in a post-match interview as the Caribbeans continue to chase "for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup." On the other hand, Pakistan left the host turf with a historic loss, their fourth most significant loss in ODI history by runs. This loss highlights the current Pakistani team's lackluster state, especially against an opponent like the West Indies, which has struggled in all formats of cricket over the last few years and was certainly playing under more pressure. The Windies also carried the fatigue of the 2-1 T20I series loss against Pakistan earlier this month, but emerged with a gigantic and historic win.

Stormers unveil new logo replacing iconic 26-year-old ‘lightning bolt'

The Stormers unveiled a new logo symbolising unity and progress, replacing their 26-year-old design. The rebrand reflects their commitment to building stronger community connections and continued success under new leadership and financial stability. They aim to embrace growth, develop players and inspire their passionate fanbase with the campaign: 'In it Together.' The Stormers have rebranded and on Wednesday unveiled a new logo that replaces their iconic 'lightning bolt' that had been worn on their kits for 26 years since 1999. The new logo, which is based on a theme of 'in it together' and attempts to bring the franchise into the modern era, still shows the Stormers 'S' and also a redesigned lightning bolt of a storm that is hovering over a depiction of Cape Town Stadium. According to a Stormers statement, the new logo 'features the iconic hoops of the Stormers jersey wrapping around and interlocking in a striking design which gives a nod to the heritage of the team, while also showing constant movement as the Stormers head towards an even brighter future. 'The hoops connect with a subtle lightning bolt in the centre, while the shape of the logo itself invokes the dimensions of the team's home ground - Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town. 'The new identity is however about far more than just a new logo. The Stormers' unique strength is the incredible diversity of communities that come together to be united under the blue and white banner of the team.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by DHL Stormers (@dhlstormers) The decision to change logos was not taken lightly and came after months of consultation that included conducting focus groups with fans. With the franchise now financially stable under the ownership of businessman Johan le Roux and the private equity investment of Red Disa Investments, the Stormers are now looking to kick on into an era of growth and continued success in the Cape Town community. Already the most supported franchise in the United Rugby Championship in terms of crowd attendance, the Stormers are looking to build for a run at the European Champions Cup in 2029 and are planning on developing their own players rather than relying on recruitment to get there. 'We have seen some major developments to the way we operate and where we see ourselves going as a club. This felt like the right time to update our identity as we embrace a new era, with all of our stakeholders 'in it together' with us. 'The previous logo was over 25 years old and past due an upgrade. This new logo holds far more symbolism, with the hoops of the jersey making up an icon which represents the unity of the various communities that support our team,' said Le Roux. 'But this is about far more than just a logo. This is a statement about how we see ourselves and the way we connect with those that support us. We want all of them with us every step of the way as we break new ground.' Director of rugby John Dobson, who has been in the Western Province structures since 2010, also embraced the change and said the mission of the squad going into the new campaign was to 'make Cape Town smile'. 'This team is one of the best-supported in the world. We have some of the most vibrant rugby communities and no shortage of passion at every level,' said Dobson. 'This is a big step forward in many ways as we take the Stormers from being a rugby team to so much more. We are 'in it together' with everyone who is coming on this exciting new journey with us.' The mastermind behind the new logo was chief commercial officer Leontine de Sutter. 'Our new identity and the campaign that we have launched seeks to bring our team and the communities that make us who we are closer than ever before,' she said. 'The 'In it Together' campaign and our brand film beautifully encapsulate the essence of our team and our new brand proposition.'
