Erotic mosaic stolen by Nazi captain in second world war returned to Pompeii

The Guardiana day ago
An erotic mosaic panel stolen from Pompeii by a German Nazi captain during the second world war has been returned to the site of the ancient Roman ruins.
The relic, which depicts a pair of lovers and dates from between the middle of the last century BC and the first century AD, had been among the heirlooms of a deceased German citizen who received the mosaic as a gift from a Wehrmacht captain responsible for the German military supply chain in Italy during the war.
The presence of the mosaic in Germany only came to light after the relatives of the deceased contacted Italy's Carabinieri cultural heritage protection squad in Rome and asked how to return it to the Italian state.
After the unit established the authenticity of the artwork, which is thought to have adorned the floor of a bedroom in a Pompeii home, its repatriation was arranged by the Italian consulate in Stuttgart.
The mosaic will temporarily be kept at the Pompeii Antiquarium, a museum that houses relics found during excavations at the site, pending further studies.
'Every looted artefact that returns is a wound that heals, so we express our gratitude to the protection unit for the work they have done,' said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of Pompeii archaeological park. 'The wound lies not so much in the material value of the work but in its historical value, a value that is severely compromised by the illicit trafficking of antiquities.'
The exact provenance of the mosaic is unknown and may never be known, added Zuchtriegel. 'But we will conduct further studies and archaeometric analyses to ascertain its authenticity and to reconstruct is history to the extent possible.'
Since its establishment in 1969, the specialist police squad has retrieved more than 3m artworks and relics stolen from Italian cultural sites.
In 2021, six fragments of wall frescoes looted from the ruins of ancient Roman villas in Stabiae, a historical site close to the main Pompeii archaeological park, were returned. The relics had been taken in illegal excavations in the 1970s and exported.
They were traced during a broader investigation into the illicit trafficking of archaeological objects in 2020 and discovered to have been bought by American, Swiss and English antique dealers in the 1990s.
There have also been several cases of tourists stealing relics from Pompeii, only to repent after many years and return the items alongside a letter of apology. In 2020, a Canadian woman sent back pilfered Pompeii fragments, claiming the items were cursed and had caused her years of bad luck.
Pompeii was buried in volcanic ash after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79 and lay buried until the 16th century.

BREAKING NEWS Tragedy as missing Brit who vanished in Italian Alps is found dead close to where he sent final selfie to friend and message saying he'd 'lost the path'

A British hiker who went missing in Italy while on holiday has been found dead. Matthew Hall, 33, disappeared on July 9 after sending a message to friends saying he was lost shortly after heading into the mountains. Search teams spotted his body in a crevice a short distance from where he sent the final text and a helicopter had to be used to recover him because of the high risk to rescuers. IT worker Matthew had been staying in a B&B at Valchiavenna near Sondrio when he disappeared and the owner raised the alarms after he failed to check out. Friends of Mr Hall, who was from Hull and worked for broadband firm Quickline had flown out to join the hunt and his mother Sara Foster had also arrived to help. In a last text sent to friend Jacob White at 13:37 BST on the day he went missing, Mr Hall had told him he thought he had taken 'a wrong turn' on a trail and was 'having a rest'. Mr White said Mr Hall 'sounded relaxed' in the text, with the latter asking him about his own holiday in Cornwall. He added that his friend 'sounded as if any danger he might have seen was over'. He had also sent a picture of a landmark at Alpe Daloo near San Giacomo Filippo to friends and family which is on a well known path and search teams used this as the focal point for the hunt. Mr Hall, who was described as a 'competent walker' had arrived in Italy in July 8 for a four day hiking break in the Valchiavenna range and drones and dogs had been used in the search before the tragic discovery. Lt Gim Toni De Masi, of the local carabinieri police, told MailOnline:'The body of the missing man was found at around 7pm on Wednesday night. 'He was around 200m below the cross where he had sent a picture, in a crevice in a very dangerous area and a helicopter had to be used to recover him. 'We received a call saying someone had spotted something and a team was sent back up the mountain to have a look and the discovery was made. 'His mother, who has only just arrived in Italy, has been informed and I understand his father is due to arrive here on Friday. 'It is not the outcome we were hoping for, and we send our condolences to his friends and family. 'His body was taken to a local hospital in Sondrio and the prosecutor has been informed as per procedure but as it looks like an accident his body will be repatriated shortly.'

Conor McGregor showers fiancee Dee with affection on luxury yacht in desperate bid to smooth over beach snog storm

CONOR McGregor has been spotted showering his fiancee Dee Devlin with affection on a yacht just days after snogging a mystery woman on a beach. The UFC star, who turned 37 on Monday, could be seen smiling and snapping pics with Dee aboard the luxury yacht off the coast of Italy. 6 6 Conor had been seen cosying up to a mystery woman for his birthday dinner last week, just days after kissing her on a beach in Florida, despite having been engaged to Dee since 2020. Pictures from his luxury yacht trip in Italy show the MMA fighter sparring and soaking in the sun alongside Dee. In moments, Conor could also be seen gently patting his partner on the bum on the expensive boat, which was adorned with balloons in the colours of the Irish flag. Dee had shared a birthday tribute to Conor earlier this week, amidst the explosive allegations about the fighter's behaviour. Not only has the fighter come under fire for snogging the mystery brunette on a Florida beach but US rapper Azealia Banks has accused him of sending her unsolicited "d*** pics". The 212 hitmaker shared the explicit photos that allegedly show the UFC brawler on X, alongside his threat 'don't be a rat cos (sic) all rats get caught'. While Dee - who's dated Conor for 17 years - hasn't commented on Azealia's claim or the fighter's holiday snaps, she's weathered even more sensational accusations levied against him in the past. There have been alleged affairs, punch-ups outside the ring and Conor being forced to pay £206,000 in damages to a woman who accused him of 'brutally raping and battering' her. Mum-of-four Dee, 37, has stood by Conor throughout. This comes as Conor was seen at a birthday dinner with the same mystery woman he was snogging on a beach last week. Rapper posts 'Conor McGregor's NUDES' online & claims disgraced UFC star 'sexually harassed her' The pair were cosying up to celebrate the Irishman's 37th birthday in Florida just days after their coastal kiss. Conor and the mystery woman were dining at Padrino's Cuban Restaurant on July 13 - tucked up against a wall. The fighter was snapped about to have a spoonful as the mystery woman beams at something across the room. McGregor donned a turquoise top, matching shorts and a trilby while his companion sported a navy blue top and jeans. 6 6 6 They then left a few moments apart. The same day as the dinner, Dee Devlin - McGregor's fiancee - wished her partner a happy birthday. They have been engaged since 2020, and they share four children together. She shared a post from a fan account which read: "Happy Birthday to the person who always keeps Dee entertained and makes her smile." Prior to his beach encounter, the MAM fighter was spotted cosying up to a mystery blonde in a nightclub birthday bash. The star was seen in a Dublin nightclub getting close to a fellow reveller. The former UFC champion was pictured smiling with his hands around a blonde woman's waist. A shocked fan snapped the pair on July 6 at Soho nightclub in the Irish capital. On top of his behaviour in Florida and Dublin, Conor has found himself in his latest spat with rapper Azealia Banks, who alleges that the fighter sent her the photos on X unprompted - despite her not following him back. The rapper claims the messages were sexual harassment, but also said that she sent the boxer nude pictures as well in a sexting-back and-forth since 2016. MCGREGOR'S LEGAL ISSUES Last year, the MMA star was found liable in a civil case that accused him of sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room in December 2018. It was alleged that he had choked the claimant, leading to her fearing for her life. He disputes the charges, arguing that they had consensual sex. A second woman accused him of sexual assault following a June 2023 incident at an NBA Finals game in Miami. The 49-year-old victim accused an "intoxicated" of slamming her face against a bathroom stall and placing her in an armlock before raping her. The woman alleged that McGregor engaged "in unlawful sexual contact" to fulfil his "own sexual gratification" and to "degrade" her. Florida prosecutors, however, declined to pursue criminal charges for the alleged assault with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, citing insufficient evidence in the case back in October 2023. McGregor denies any accusations of wrongdoing.

Mother of Brit who vanished in Italy a year ago during trip with woman he met online says she has received mystery messages

The mother of a British tourist who has been missing for a year after vanishing in Sardinia has been sent messages saying: 'I tried to believe it was an accident.' Michael Frison, 26, from Chard in Somerset, disappeared in rural Luras on July 13, 2024 while staying with friend Niomi Orlandini, 27, from Jersey. His mother, Cristina Pittalis, said that the pair had met online in July 2023 and seen each other in person just once before he asked her to join him on the Italian island. While in Sardinia, Ms Orlandini called Ms Pittalis to say her son had come back from a walk in a confused state, rested, and then ventured off again without returning. The mother-of-two told The Sun that she has now received 'anonymous and disturbing Facebook messages' from someone she believes may know more. The messages, she said, 'reference guilty, fear, and the ability to remain silent.' 'I tried to forget. I tried to believe it was an accident. But the fear… it doesn't go,' one message read, according to The Sun. Ms Pittalis has since moved back to Sardinia, where she was born, in the hopes of finding Mr Frison, but says she has found nothing to explain his disappearance. Earlier this week, she told Sky News that she was living a 'never-ending nightmare' and called for Interpol to intervene. Mr Frison, who grew up in Bristol, flew from Bristol Airport to Olbia on July 2 last year to celebrate his 25th birthday and his grandmother's 70th. He asked his friend to join him on the island and cancelled his return flight home to stay with her for another week. Ms Pittalis understands that they left the grandparents' home together on July 12 and went to volunteer on a farm in return for food and lodging. They stayed in a tent near the German couple that owned the land. Mr Frison went missing on July 13. He is understood to have gone for a walk and returned 'confused', with symptoms of heatstroke. He left on another walk and never came back. Ms Orlandini found his clothes, including his trainers, nearby. 'Human beings do not disappear from the face of earth without leaving traces unless […] something extremely bad happened to them,' Ms Pittalis told Sky News. She said it was 'completely out of character' for him to leave barefoot, and assessed it 'extremely unlikely' he was suffering from heatstroke. He had lived on the island before and knew the climate, she said. Ms Pittalis previously said the last message she received from her son was the night before he went missing saying he would call her the next day. The mother revealed in October it was 'out of character' for her son to vanish without contacting his family. She said she has had no response from Ms Orlandini since she left the island but insists 'I'm not accusing her of anything'. She previously pleaded to her son's friend, as she believes she may have details regarding his whereabouts. 'I need you, Niomi. I need your help. You've done nothing wrong,' Cristina pleaded in October: 'However, you were the last person to be with Michael.' A fundraiser has been set up to try and raise funds to get volunteers out to Sardinia in the search for Mr Frison.
