Strong currents sweep away Rohingya girl who fell in drain near Kampung Cheras Baru
KUALA LUMPUR: An 11-year-old Rohingya girl has gone missing after being swept away by strong currents in a drain in front of the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) Hall in Kampung Cheras Baru yesterday.
Ampang Jaya Police Chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail said police received information about the incident at 6.07 pm via the District Control Centre of the Ampang Jaya District Police Headquarters.
'Upon receiving the report, police and the fire and rescue department personnel were dispatched to the scene and were informed that two girls had fallen into the drain but one of the girls, a 10-year-old Rohingya, was rescued by members of the public,' he said in a statement today.
He added that a rescue team was conducting search and rescue operations for the second missing Rohingya child, together with the Ampang Jaya police and firefighters from the Ampang Fire and Rescue Station.
'The search and rescue operation was called off at 10.30 pm due to darkness and rain, and will resume tomorrow at 8 am,' he said.
Mohd Azam urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the police to assist with the investigation.

'For the next three days, they kept beating us, and we were starving', reporting that they were then dropped overboard in the mangrove swamps of the Sundarbans, which straddle the border between the nations. 'They dropped us... the coast guard rescued us and handed us over to the police'. AFP could not independently verify his account. India shares a long and porous border with neighbouring Muslim-majority Bangladesh. The mostly Muslim Rohingya have been persecuted in Myanmar for decades, with many fleeing a 2017 military crackdown. More than a million escaped to Bangladesh, but others fled to India. The BGB official said 'some of the Rohingya' were registered with the UN refugee agency in India. Md Touhid Hossain, who heads the foreign ministry in the caretaker government, said Dhaka was 'putting all our efforts' into resolving the issue through dialogue. Indian media report that, since a four-day conflict with Pakistan last month, authorities have pushed back more than 2,000 alleged illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. In February, Amit Shah, India's interior minister said 'the issue of illegal intruders is also related to national security, and it should be dealt with strictly', adding that 'they should be identified and deported'.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah, in a statement today, said the operation was conducted between 11pm and 3am by a team of traffic police from the Miri District Police Headquarters. The offences including expired vehicle licences, driving without a licence, structural modifications, modified exhausts, missing side mirrors, missing or fancy registration numbers, failure to display the 'P' (probationary) plate, and faulty motorcycle brakes. 'Three local men, aged 16, 21 and 25, were inspected and detained on suspicion of committing offences under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. 'If convicted, all suspects will be charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment, a minimum fine of RM5,000 up to RM10,000, and disqualification from holding a driving licence,' ACP Mohd Farhan said in the statement. Additionally, 11 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act for documentation purposes. ACP Mohd Farhan urged the public to report any street racing or road hooliganism by contacting Traffic Investigation Officer Inspector Mohammad Amiruddin Hamdan at 018-952 9957 or 085-430 479, or by visiting the nearest police station. He added that such operations will continue periodically, advising road users—especially motorcyclists—to ride responsibly and avoid illegal street racing, modifying their vehicles, and not gather by the roadside in a manner that causes traffic congestion or create noise disturbances that disrupt public peace as negligence will pose a danger to themselves and other road users.
