NHL Trade Rumors: Montreal Canadiens eye Mason McTavish, but Anaheim Ducks' asking price for star center is steep
Trade chatter is swirling around Anaheim Ducks center Mason McTavish, with the Montreal Canadiens emerging as a frequent link. While Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek has made it clear he wants to keep the 22-year-old, reports indicate he's open to moving McTavish if the return is right.
That return, however, comes with a high price tag, one that could force Montreal into a tough decision.
Anaheim Ducks set high asking price for Mason McTavish, targeting Canadiens prospect
David Reinbacher
According to multiple reports, including Jimmy Murphy's, Verbeek would only consider parting with McTavish for a young, right-handed defenseman capable of playing in a top-four role immediately, with the potential to grow into a first-pairing cornerstone.
Within the Canadiens' system, that description points directly to David Reinbacher, the fifth overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft.
The 20-year-old is widely viewed as Montreal's top defense prospect and a key part of their future blue line.
The Ducks' reported request is straightforward, Reinbacher for McTavish — but it's a steep cost for the Habs, who have been cautious about moving their top young assets.
Why Mason McTavish could be the perfect addition to the Montreal Canadiens' roster
McTavish, 22, stands 6-foot-2, weighs 220 pounds, and plays a strong two-way game. Selected third overall by Anaheim in 2021, he has already compiled 140 points in 229 NHL games, including 60 goals.
Last season, he tallied 52 points in 76 games, often in a third-line role and with limited power play time, suggesting even more offensive upside.
For Montreal, McTavish would slot perfectly as a second-line center behind Nick Suzuki, giving the team a reliable scoring threat and added size down the middle. His combination of skill, strength, and playoff-style play makes him an appealing target, but surrendering Reinbacher could leave a long-term hole on the right side of their defense.
The McTavish-to-Montreal speculation highlights a classic NHL trade dilemma, balancing the allure of an NHL-ready young star against the value of a blue-chip prospect. While McTavish could address an immediate need for the Canadiens, Anaheim's high asking price ensures this deal, if it ever happens, will require serious consideration from both sides. Until then, the trade rumors are likely to remain a hot topic.

Test cricket needs quality not quantity to stay alive: Australia chief Todd Greenberg
India won the fifth and final Test vs England at The Oval (Getty Images) Australia cricket chief Todd Greenberg on Wednesday said a reduced Test calendar could help smaller nations, as the five-day format thrived most 'where it means something.' With 100 days to go until the home Ashes series against England begins in Perth, the Cricket Australia CEO stressed that quality, not quantity, was key to keeping red-ball cricket strong. "We're trying to send countries bankrupt if we force them to try to play Test cricket," he told reporters. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "We need to make sure we invest in the right spaces to play Test cricket where it means something. "That's why the Ashes will be as enormous and as profitable as it is -- because it means something." England recently wrapped up a thrilling 2-2 home series draw against India in front of sold-out stadiums. In contrast, New Zealand and Australia cruised to easy overseas Test series wins against the struggling West Indies and Zimbabwe respectively, raising doubts over the competitiveness of Test cricket in those nations. One proposal is to introduce two or more divisions of Test cricket to maintain competitiveness, though Greenberg said he had no firm view on the ideal number of Test-playing nations. "Let's consider what the future might look like," he said. According to Greenberg, the five-day game remained in excellent health in Australia, with Ashes interest 'off the charts.' "This will be the biggest sports event in Australia this year," said Greenberg. "The interest is quite extraordinary with ticket allocations for 11 of the 20 days on sale already exhausted." IOA formally approves India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games
Logo of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). The Indian Olympic Association formally approved India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games during its Special General Meeting (SGM) in New Delhi on Wednesday. The bid proposal features Ahmedabad as the host city, with India already having submitted an Expression of Interest and needing to submit final bid proposals before August 31. India's chances of securing the 2030 Commonwealth Games have improved following Canada's withdrawal from the bidding process. A team from Commonwealth Sport, led by Director of Games Darren Hall, recently inspected venues in Ahmedabad and met with Gujarat government officials. A larger delegation is expected to visit later this month. The host country will be decided by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow during the last week of November. India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. "The approval was given unanimously by the General House. We will now move ahead full steam with our preparations," said IOA joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey after the brief SGM. "The 2030 CWG will be a full-fledged Games. We will have all the sports we are good at and have a chance of winning maximum medals," said Executive Council member Rohit Rajpal, addressing the reduced sports roster for the 2026 Glasgow edition. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Eat Ginger Everyday for 1 Month This is What Happens Tips and Tricks Undo "There are three groups of sports. First is core sports of the Commonwealth Games which are always there, then are sports which the host nation can choose and the third one are the additional sports. The 2030 will be an inclusive Games and will feature our traditional and indigenous sports also," Rajpal added. "The plan is to have all our medal-earning sports like shooting, archery, wrestling etc. Our traditional sports like kabaddi, and kho kho should also be there," said Chaubey. The announcement comes in response to the 2026 Glasgow edition's decision to exclude major sports like hockey, badminton, wrestling, and shooting due to cost considerations.
