Air India plane crashes into medical hostel, wreckage stuck in building

The aircraft, which took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:38 pm, crashed into a residential zone in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar barely five minutes later. A large portion of the plane, with its landing gear visibly attached, was seen lodged atop the medical hostel building, according to eyewitness accounts and video footage.

The flight was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew. According to Air India, the aircraft had 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese citizens on board.
"Those injured are being taken to hospitals," said an official statement from the airline. 'We have also set up a dedicated passenger hotline number — 1800 5691 444 — to provide more information. Air India is giving its full cooperation to the authorities investigating this incident,' the airline added.
UK Embassy responds
Responding to the incident, the British High Commission in India issued a statement acknowledging that 53 of its nationals were on board the ill-fated flight.
'We are aware that a flight from Ahmedabad to London has crashed near Ahmedabad airport. We are working with local authorities to urgently establish the facts and provide support. Our thoughts are with all those affected,' the UK Embassy stated.
PM Modi takes stock, minister rushing to site
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and taken a detailed briefing on the situation. The Prime Minister has directed the minister to ensure that all necessary support is provided immediately and to keep him regularly updated.
Naidu expressed his deep shock over the crash and confirmed he is en route to Ahmedabad to oversee rescue and relief operations.
"Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. We are on highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families," the minister posted on X.

UP: Devotees seek blessings of lord Banke Bihari on Hariyali Teej
Mathura (UP), Jul 27 (PTI) People from different walks of life flocked to the temples in Mathura and Vrindavan and sought the blessings of lord Banke Bihari on the occasion of Hariyali Teej on Sunday. 'A large number of devotees are visiting the Shri Banke Bihari Temple (in Vrindavan) today. Banke Bihari jee Maharaj, in a green attire, gave darshan to devotees on a 'Hindola' (swing) made of gold and silver along with Radha Rani," temple Sewayat Gyanendra Kishor Goswami said. Elaborating on the significance of the day, he said that apart from a religious point of view, this ritual has a connection with India's independence as the tradition started on August 15, 1947, the day of India's independence. 'Earlier, Hindola darshans were available only in the evening, but after a Supreme Court order in 2016, Hindola darshan is now available both in the morning and evening darshans. Ghewar and Pheni are two special additions made to Thakur ji's prashad today," Goswami said. 'The swing was crafted by two goldsmiths of Varanasi in Vrindavan with 1 lakh tola of silver and 10,000 tola of gold, some 79 years ago," temple Sewayat and scholar Prahlad Vallabh Goswami said. Hariyali Teej is also celebrated in 'Sapt Devalaya' (seven ancient temples) of Vrindavan. In Radharaman temple (in Vrindavan), the day marks the beginning of the 485-year-old festival, which culminates on Rakshabandhan. 'Radharaman is wearing green clothes with a 'pagrhi' while giving darshans in a golden swing kept at the temple. The deity will give darshans in the golden swing for the next two days, followed by darshans in silver swing for the subsequent three days and in other types of swings thereafter," temple Sewayat Dinesh Chandra Goswami said. A special prasad called 'Sinhare', which includes Ghewar and Pheni, is offered to the deity on the occasion. However, a sweet puri called 'pua' is offered during the Sawan month, he said. In the Dwarkadheesh temple in Mathura city, two silver and one gold swings are put in the temple's courtyard, from the beginning of the Sawan, and they will remain there till Nandotsav, Rakesh Tiwari, media in-charge of Dwarkadheesh temple, said. The swings are decorated with fruits and flowers, and the temple is also decorated with different colours of cloth, each of which is associated with Lord Krishna's different Leelas, Rakesh Tiwari said. Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh, in an appeal to devotees, asked them to celebrate this festival without plastic and maintain cleanliness. 'Adequate arrangements are in place to ensure smooth darshan of Shri Bankey Bihari ji without compromising the safety of the devotees. Sector magistrates are instructed to maintain continuity in movement of devotees," Singh said. Mathura Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said, 'The area is divided into four zones and 22 sectors and is supervised by magistrates and police officers. A traffic plan is in place to prevent traffic jams. Holding areas and parking places are identified to regulate the crowd." Haryana CET conducted smoothly, CM Saini says everyone worked as a team
Chandigarh, Jul 27 (PTI) The Common Eligibility Test (CET) was conducted for the second day on Sunday across Haryana amid tight security, with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini saying 'everyone worked as a team" to ensure that the exams were conducted smoothly. The exam was conducted over two days — Saturday and Sunday — in morning and afternoon shifts. The Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) conducted the CET for the 'Group C' posts recruitment. Around 13.48 lakh candidates were eligible to appear in the examination. Arrangements were made across 22 districts of Haryana, and in Chandigarh too, where exam centres were set up. Special bus services were arranged by the Haryana transport department to ferry candidates to the exam centres. HSSC Chairman Himmat Singh visited Rohtak and some other centres to take stock of the arrangements. Candidates were allowed in only after a thorough check, officials said. 'When everyone works as a team, the challenge becomes small," he said, when asked if the government faced any issue in conducting the exam. He lauded the coordinated efforts of officers and employees across Haryana in ensuring smooth conduct of the exam. The CM said that the government ensured hassle-free facilities so that candidates could appear for the exam in a positive and comfortable environment. Administrative officers, police personnel, and Haryana roadways staff worked in close coordination, while local residents also extended support by setting up refreshment points for candidates at various locations. Deputy commissioners, superintendents of police, and other senior administrative officers inspected the exam centres, bus stands, and other locations. CCTV surveillance, flying squads, duty magistrates, and nodal officers were deployed at all centres, officials said. Meanwhile, the government had arranged transport from home for the physically challenged candidates. Across various districts, social and religious organizations arranged food, water, and accommodation for examinees. Responding to the government's appeal, social activists supplemented the government's efforts by arranging free transport for candidates at some places. In Sirsa, a volunteer Ajmer Singh used his own cars to ferry candidates to exam centres. The police too went the extra mile, helping candidates who reached the wrong centres or faced vehicle breakdowns. Quick responses to emergency helpline 'Dial 112' ensured that no candidate missed their exam due to unforeseen issues. There were many cases where candidates reached wrong centres and police and civil administration authorities quickly stepped in helping them reach the allotted exam centre. Two candidates who mistakenly reached Rania instead of Sirsa exam centres were safely dropped off by the police after a quick helpline call. In Karnal, Nilokheri's Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Ashok Kumar set an inspiring example when a candidate, Renu Devi, was injured in a motorcycle accident on her way to the exam. The SDM personally ensured she received first aid and then drove her in his own vehicle to the exam centre in time, enabling her to take the exam. In Faridabad, special helpline numbers and 'Dial 112' worked as problem-solvers for candidates. Deputy Commissioner, Vikram Singh and Commissioner of Police (CP), Satender Kumar Gupta personally monitored complaints, ensuring immediate resolution. Around 200 calls related to bag storage, parking, and transport assistance were addressed and resolved. The Emergency Response Vehicle teams actively transported candidates to their exam centres. Parents accompanying candidates appreciated the government's arrangements. Special provisions for bag storage were also made for students who came alone. At one exam centre, two women police personnel took care of an 11-month-old child of a female candidate, allowing her to appear for the exam without worry. The HSSC has said both the cops will be honoured with a cash award and a certificate of appreciation from the commission. Haryana Transport Minister Anil Vij said that the successful conduct of the CET exam has been possible due to the cooperation of all including employees of all departments, and the candidates. He appreciated the Haryana Roadways bus drivers who were on duty from 5 am. The Transport Minister said that providing safe and timely bus services to CET candidates along with ensuring transport facilities for the general public was a big task. 'As it is the Teej festival and also a weekend (Saturday and Sunday), most people prefer to travel to and from their homes using public transport. We ensured that besides CET candidates, common passengers were also taken care of," said Vij, who interacted with several candidates in Ambala. Later, he boarded a bus in Ambala to interact with the candidates and enquired about their exam experience. Border courtesy continues between BSF, Pakistan Rangers
1 2 Amritsar: Even as Operation Sindoor remains on hold, an unwritten understanding continues between India's Border Security Force ( BSF ) and the Pakistan Rangers , reflecting mutual respect for rank and established border decorum. This courtesy persists even as the border gates between the two countries remain closed under the operation. At joint check posts (JCPs) in Punjab, where the two borders are separated by mere feet, junior officers or personnel customarily salute or come to attention upon encountering a senior-ranking official from the other side. This practice is most evident during patrols, security reviews, and joint meetings between the two forces. Referring to his recent visit to the Hussainiwala post, inspector general (IG) BSF, Punjab Frontier, Atul Fulzele said, "When I visited the Hussainiwala JCP, officers on the Pakistan side saluted me." He added that the gesture is reciprocal, with junior Indian officers also saluting senior-ranking Pakistani officers. He explained that this is a standard border practice, as personnel interact daily. Regardless of nationality, junior officers show respect to senior officers based on rank, which is universally recognised. Since the rank badges, dating back to British colonial times, are similar on both sides, personnel can easily identify and acknowledge each other's rank. "It is simply a routine gesture of respect," he said. Another former IG BSF, Punjab Frontier, Himmat Singh, added that junior officers mostly salute seniors during official meetings. "But sometimes, out of traditional border courtesy, the junior officials come to attention on seeing a senior officer of the other country," he said.
