Liverpool ‘encouraged' over Alexander Isak pursuit
Liverpool have been given encouragement in their pursuit of Alexander Isak with contract talks between the forward and Newcastle having failed to progress.
Newcastle are aware of interest in Isak from the Premier League champions and are keen to tie the Swedish striker down to a new deal. Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 games for the Magpies and is regarded as one of Europe's best number nines.
Liverpool view Isak as the ideal addition to their frontline and are aware that Newcastle have no intention of selling, after securing Champions League qualification.

However, Flashscore are reporting that a lack of progress on contract talks has offered Liverpool encouragement. Isak currently earns around £120,000-a-week at St James' Park and would reportedly command a deal closer to £200,000-a-week to remain at Newcastle long term.
That salary would make Isak comfortably the club's highest earner and Liverpool are 'alert' to the situation should an agreement not be reached.
Liverpool are aware it would take a British record offer of £120m, as a minimum, to begin talks for the forward. The Reds are set to finalise a club-record deal for Florian Wirtz on Friday, worth an initial £100m, and have agreed a £40m fee for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.
It continues a remarkable summer for Liverpool, who are looking to build from a position of strength. A number nine who can score goals and 'connect the team' is on the radar, with Isak top of the wish list. Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike has been monitored as an alternative.

Liverpool are expected to recoup further funds from a series of sales. Jarell Quansah is nearing a £34m move to Bayer Leverkusen, while there is interest in Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott and Andy Robertson.

Red Sox exec emphatically shoots down Liverpool conspiracy theory about Rafael Devers trade
Liverpool made a major splash in the soccer world last week, agreeing to a record-breaking £116m transfer ($157 million) to acquire Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Landing the midfielder could be a franchise-altering move. Advertisement Shortly after that, the Boston Red Sox made a franchise-changing move of their own, offloading Rafael Devers and the $271.2 million remaining on his contract in a trade with the San Francisco Giants. As John Henry and the Fenway Sports Group are the owners of both clubs, a conspiracy theory immediately circulated that the Red Sox were forced to trade Devers because Liverpool had landed Wirtz. On WEEI's Greg Hill Show Tuesday morning, Boston's Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow shot that idea down emphatically. 'That's not just a stretch, it's just completely untrue,' Breslow said. 'In none of the conversations that I have with John, with ownership, about our resources, is the financial implications or situations of any of the other teams a topic. Advertisement 'The Red Sox are run independently of any of those other organizations. The timing here was just a matter of lining up on getting the right players back and finding the right situation that represented a trade that we needed to make.' Breslow also denied a report from Geoff Pontes that the Red Sox had another deal on the table for Devers, but it was vetoed by Henry when the suitor wouldn't take on all of the designated hitter's contract. 'No,' Breslow said. 'When I read that, I was as surprised as anybody else would have been who had no idea that this was a thing or had happened. Absolutely not true.' Who is Florian Wirtz, the $156 million man joining Liverpool?
Premier League champion Liverpool has announced the arrival of German midfielder Florian Wirtz – a statement signing in this summer transfer window. Wirtz joins Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116.5 million (around $156 million), according to multiple UK media reports, and will only strengthen Arne Slot's title-winning side heading into next season. Advertisement It makes Wirtz the most expensive player in British soccer, his reported price tag potentially exceeding the £115 million ($146 million) that Chelsea paid for Ecuadorian midfielder Moisés Caicedo. 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me,' Wirtz told 'This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League. 'I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it's perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I'm really looking forward to playing my first game.' Advertisement At the age of 22, Wirtz has already made a hugely impressive start to his career with club and country. After joining the Bayer Leverkusen youth setup, he was soon elevated to the first team aged 17 years and 15 days, becoming the club's then-youngest player to feature in the Bundesliga. More records would follow, with Wirtz becoming the league's youngest goalscorer when he netted in a defeat against Bayern Munich in 2020, a record that has since been passed by Borussia Dortmund's Youssoufa Moukoko. A torn ACL three years ago halted the playmaker's progress and put him out of action for 10 months, but Wirtz bided his time on the sidelines and went on to play a starring role in Leverkusen's astonishing 2023-24 season, winning the German Cup and a first-ever league title. Only a defeat against Atalanta in the Europa League final denied Leverkusen a famous treble, putting an end to a 51-game unbeaten run. Advertisement Wirtz had 18 goals and 20 assists in all competitions that season, then went on to notch 16 goals – six of which came in the Champions League – and 15 assists in 45 games last year. In that time, the midfielder established himself as one of the most sought-after players in Europe. Understandably, Wirtz has been heaped with praise. Barcelona and former German national team manager Hansi Flick called him 'the full package,' while former Leverkusen striker Patrick Helmes went as far as to label him 'probably the best midfielder in the world.' Wirtz dribbles during the recent Nations League match between Germany and France. -Already an established member of the German national team, Wirtz missed out on playing at the 2022 World Cup because of his ACL injury, but did take part in all five of his country's games at last year's European Championships. Advertisement Together with Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala, he looks destined to be at the heart of Germany's attack for years to come. 'Florian is a more direct player (than Musiala), a strategic playmaker,' said former Germany coach Joachim Löw. 'He constantly has his head up, always looking for his teammates, and has the vision to play that decisive final pass.' At Liverpool, Wirtz will be part of a talented midfield featuring Alexis Mac Allister – a World Cup winner with Argentina – Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, as well as linking up with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, who the Reds also signed last month. On top of prolific goalscorer Mohamed Salah signing a new contract with the club at the end of last season, Wirtz's arrival gives Slot an array of attacking options next season. Liverpool break club record spend to sign Florian Wirtz
Florian Wirtz has joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record £100m. The German has signed a five-year contract after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms. Wirtz's fee could rise to a British record of £116m if Liverpool enjoy sustained success during his first five years at Anfield. Advertisement The most expensive signing ever made by a Premier League club was when Chelsea bought Moises Caicedo for £115m in 2023. Wirtz will replace Darwin Nunez as Liverpool's biggest ever buy. He also attracted attention from Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid but his preference was to go to Liverpool after he was impressed in conversations with them. Wirtz becomes Liverpool's second signing of the summer from Leverkusen after Jeremie Frimpong joined for £29.4m while Jarell Quansah could join the 2024 Bundesliga champions. Liverpool are also closing in on a third buy with Milos Kerkez potentially arriving from Bournemouth. Finally it's done and I was waiting for a long time, finally it's done and I am really happy. Advertisement 'I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League. 'I will see how I can perform there. The Reds have previously paid £75m for Virgil van Dijk and £64m, rising to £85m, for Darwin Nunez. Advertisement The highly-rated midfielder also attracted attention from Bayern Munich but told the German champions he wanted to go to Liverpool and agreed personal terms with the club three weeks ago. Wirtz has scored 34 goals in the last two seasons for Leverkusen, helping them win a first league title in 2023/24 across an unbeaten domestic season, when he was named the Bundesliga Player of the Year. He was integral to the club's newfound success under Reds legend Xabi Alonso, who guided them to within one game of a historic undefeated treble after lifting both the league and the DFB Pokal, only to lose the 2024 Europa League final to Atalanta.
