Migrant boat capsizes off Italy, leaves at least 20 dead: UN
Rome, Aug 13 (AP) A boat carrying nearly 100 migrants capsized off the Italian island of Lampedusa, killing at least 20 people and leaving another dozen missing, the UN refugee agency said Wednesday.
Sixty survivors have been brought to a centre in Lampedusa, said a UNHCR spokesman in Italy, Filippo Ungaro. According to survivor accounts, there were 92 to 97 migrants on board when the boat departed Libya. Authorities have recovered 20 bodies, and were searching for another 12 to 17 survivors, according to the UNHCR. (AP) GSP

Robert Sullivan, pastor of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood, Alabama, was accused by Heather Jones, now 33. Jones said the relationship began in 2009 when she was 17 years old and working at a strip club Sullivan regularly visited. She claimed he offered financial support in exchange for 'private companionship," which included sex, The Guardian reported. Jones described how Sullivan, who initially introduced himself as a doctor, frequently took her shopping, dining, drinking, and to hotels in at least six cities across Alabama over several years. She also said he bought her a phone and paid for her rehab treatment while she struggled with addiction and depression. In 2024 and 2025, Jones alleged that Sullivan paid her nearly $120,000 through more than 125 Venmo transactions. In addition, she received $273,000 through two wire transfers of $136,500 each from an attorney's office as part of a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Jones shared bank records, an email from Sullivan's church address, and a copy of the unsigned NDA to support her claims. She came forward because she fears others could be vulnerable to similar exploitation, as Sullivan continues to work closely with families and children in his parish. The Catholic Diocese of Birmingham confirmed that Sullivan has been placed on 'personal leave" while an independent review board investigates the allegations. The diocese has also forwarded the matter to the Vatican's office that handles clergy misconduct cases. Bishop Steven Raica, leader of the Birmingham Diocese, said there was not enough evidence to open a criminal investigation, but a diocesan inquiry is ongoing in line with Church law and policies. He also assured that the woman has received appropriate support from the diocese's Victim Assistance Coordinator. Sullivan has served as a priest for more than 32 years and was previously president of John Carroll High School for six years. NIA court convicts 3 men for smuggling fake Indian currency notes from Malaysia
Mumbai, Aug 14 (PTI) Three accused have been convicted and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment (RI) by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court here for involvement in smuggling of high-quality counterfeit notes from Malaysia into India, an official statement issued on Thursday said. Danish Haji Mohammed Petiwala and Sarasvati Dattaram alias Muskan have been sentenced to five years, six months and two days of RI and a fine of Rs 6,000 each, it said. J Kaleel Rahman will undergo RI of five years, five months and 18 days along with a fine of Rs 5,000, according to the orders of the court, which held all three guilty under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, said the NIA statement. The 2020 case emanated from information received by the Customs Department, Mumbai, regarding the import of a parcel from Malaysia containing fake Indian currency notes (FICNs) of a total face value of Rs 68,000 (Rs 2,000 × 34 notes), it said. The parcel was addressed to one Sangita Kapoor at her Goregaon (West), Mumbai, address, the NIA said. Investigations revealed the involvement of Danish Haji, a resident of Mahim, Mumbai, and his girlfriend Sarasvati, along with a Malaysian resident, Amir Mirza alias Rafiq Shaikh, a wanted absconder against whom a non-bailable warrant was also issued in September 2020. The Customs officials also recovered one FICN from Hotel Adya International, Andheri East, where Danish and Sarasvati had stayed before their arrest, the NIA said. After taking over the case, which exposed the use of banking channels and postal services to transfer FICNs in exchange for genuine currency, the NIA found that Danish and Sarasvati had conspired with Amir and Kalil to smuggle high-quality counterfeit currency from Malaysia to India, with the intent of destabilising India's financial system, it added. Two women held for stealing newborn from hospital in MPs Sagar
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Sagar, Aug 14 (PTI) Two women were arrested for allegedly stealing a newborn on Thursday from a ward of the government run Bundelkhand Medical College and Hospital (BMC&H) in Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh, a police official said. The child has been rescued, additional superintendent of police Lokesh Sinha told PTI over phone. 'CCTV footage from the hospital showed a woman in a red sari carrying the infant. We traced her location to Karra Pur, about 15 km from the hospital. A bus was intercepted at Karra Pur area after learning that the woman with her accomplice had boarded it. The woman and her daughter in-law have been arrested. One of the women is 70 years old," he said. The accused have told police they stole the child since their family did not have a son, Sinha said. Somati Adivasi (25),who was admitted to BMC on August 8 and delivered on August 9, told reporters a woman was roaming in the ward since morning and took away the child. 'BMC & Hospital Dean Dr P S Thakur has formed a three-member inquiry committee in connection with the incident. A security guard on duty at the ward for 15 days is a suspect. Another guard who helped investigators to locate the child will be felicitated on Independence Day," the facility's Public Relation Officer Dr Sourabh Jain told PTI. The child was medically examined after being rescued and he is fine, officials added.
