Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has written to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, expressing concern over the 'humanitarian crisis' following the demolition of the Madrasi Camp in Jangpura on June 1. The demolition displaced around 370 families of Tamil origin who had been residing in the area for decades.Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP TR Baalu personally handed over the letter to the Delhi Chief Minister on Friday.advertisementWhile 189 families have been allotted flats under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) housing scheme in Narela, Chief Minister Stalin stated that these accommodations lack basic infrastructure and remain unfit for living.
He also flagged the absence of arrangements for over 150 Tamil-medium students, despite court directions to ensure continuity of education.Stalin further highlighted the lack of transportation facilities to the workplaces of many of the relocated residents, which are situated nearly 20 km from Narela. The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister urged the Delhi government to ensure dignified rehabilitation and take steps to restore the livelihoods of the affected families. The Delhi High Court had earlier declared the 'Madarasi camp' located in South Delhi along the bank of the Barapullah Jangpura drain, near Nizamuddin Railway Station as 'illegal'. The Tamil Nadu government said that it would assist affected residents in returning to their native districts in Tamil Nadu, if they choose to do so.advertisement

Delhi govt set to unveil new excise policy, social security top priority

Delhi government is preparing to roll out a revamped excise policy aimed at modernising liquor distribution while placing strong emphasis on transparency, accountability, and social responsibility. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced that the proposed changes are rooted in public interest, with special attention being paid to ensure no adverse impact on sensitive sections of society. A high-powered committee led by Delhi's Chief Secretary, Dharmendra Kumar, is spearheading the policy revamp, with inputs being gathered from stakeholders and a comparative review of excise models across various Indian states. The panel is tasked with finalising its recommendations by 30 June, following an in-depth examination of Delhi's past excise strategies alongside those implemented elsewhere. Quality, accountability and a 'people-first' approach According to an official statement, the new excise framework will include several key reforms, such as digitisation of the liquor sales system, scientific testing to ensure liquor quality, and robust mechanisms to curb illegal sales. The policy also aims to enhance transparency in the licensing process and introduce strict regulatory oversight to minimise corruption. 'The trust of Delhi's people is paramount. Unlike the past regime, which prioritised corporate profits over public good, this new policy will eliminate avenues of corruption and misuse,' said CM Rekha Gupta. The Delhi CM criticised the previous excise regime, calling it 'corrupt, biased, and anti-public interest.' She alleged that the earlier policy facilitated undue advantages for select private players, to the detriment of public revenue and welfare. 'That model has been discredited not only in the public eye but also through ongoing investigations, which led to its eventual scrapping,' she said, adding that former ministers and the ex-chief minister faced legal consequences for their roles in the debacle. Social safeguards at the core of the reform Beyond financial and administrative overhauls, the proposed policy places social welfare at its heart. The Delhi CM affirmed that the government would not allow the policy to compromise the safety, health, or peace of vulnerable and marginalised communities. To that end, public awareness campaigns will be launched to curb misuse of alcohol, and strict enforcement measures will be implemented to prevent consumption in public places. The government has also committed to integrating best practices from other states, especially those that have achieved success in tackling illicit liquor trade and enhancing consumer protection. 'This is not merely an economic reform—it's a social compact,' she noted. 'We're committed to ensuring that economic modernisation does not come at the cost of public interest. The new excise policy will reflect a holistic, people-centric vision for Delhi.' As the deadline for the policy framework approaches, all eyes are now on the high-level committee's recommendations—expected to set the tone for a cleaner, fairer, and more accountable excise ecosystem in the national capital.

DMK to commence membership drive on June 20

Chennai: The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will begin its state-wide membership drive on June 20, as part of a major organisational initiative ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin will personally meet party functionaries from all 234 Assembly constituencies as part of the programme titled 'Udanpirappe Vaa'. The initiative was announced by DMK organisation secretary R.S. Bharathi, who confirmed that Stalin plans to complete these constituency-level interactions before the party's annual Mupperum Vizha celebrations scheduled for September 17. Under this programme, Stalin will interact directly with grassroots-level party workers -- excluding district secretaries, whom he will meet separately. The meetings are being held at the party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai. The first session took place on Friday, where Stalin met functionaries from Chidambaram, Villupuram, and Usilampatti constituencies. Sharing a message on X, Stalin wrote, 'To reach out to the people with the achievements of the government, to defeat those who are desperate to bring down Tamil Nadu, and to boost the party's robust structure -- Udanpirappe Vaa.' The Chief Minister is being accompanied during these interactions by a panel that includes R.S. Bharathi, party spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan, joint organisation secretary Anbagam Kalai, and deputy organisation secretaries S. Austin and Thayagam Kavi. Each meeting was originally planned to last five minutes, but several interactions were extended as Stalin engaged actively with the cadre. According to party sources, Stalin came prepared with detailed performance reports of each functionary, which formed the basis for his questions and discussions. He also sought suggestions and feedback to strengthen preparations for the 2026 Assembly polls. In a notable gesture, each participant received a signed copy of Stalin's autobiography 'Ungalil Oruvan' during the meeting. An 'opinion box' has been placed at the venue to collect written feedback from those who wish to share ideas or concerns they were unable to voice during the meeting. 'We will carefully review all the inputs we receive,' Bharathi said. Stalin also reportedly enquired about the level of coordination between local functionaries and district secretaries, indicating a focus on improving intra-party communication. The next round of meetings will resume on June 17. Stalin is expected to be in Thanjavur on June 15 and 16 for official engagements. The DMK president has already urged party cadres to intensify efforts at the grassroots level and ensure that the INDIA bloc secures at least 200 of the 234 Assembly seats in the next state elections.

MCD yet to receive Rs 820 crore announced by BJP govt, says Opposition leader Ankush Narang

NEW DELHI: The Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Ankush Narang, on Friday alleged that a fund of Rs 820 crore announced by the government a week ago has not yet reached the civic body, pushing it into a financial crisis. On June 6, the Delhi government announced it would release Rs 820 crore to the MCD under the Basic Tax Assignment framework. The LoP alleged that within weeks of reclaiming control of the civic agency, the BJP has triggered a fresh wave of salary delays for municipal staff—reviving the very crisis it had presided over during its previous 15-year rule. He claimed that employees across all categories are now receiving their salaries 10 to 20 days late. He said that under the AAP government, salaries had been regularised and deposited on the first of every month. Alleging mismanagement, Narang said, 'Last week, CM Rekha Gupta claimed Rs 820 crore had been released to the MCD. But till date, not a single rupee has reached the civic body.' He further said that Delhi is now being governed by a'four-engine BJP government'—at the Centre, in the MCD, in the Delhi government, and via the Lieutenant Governor , whom the CM herself refers to as the fourth engine. 'Despite all four engines being powered by the BJP, governance is in shambles,' he said. 'Last week, the BJP announced that the Delhi government would release Rs 3,282 crore to the MCD, of which the first tranche of Rs 820 crore had been cleared. Media reports claimed the amount had been transferred, and CM Rekha Gupta herself asserted that the money had been released. Yet to this day, that Rs 820 crore has not reached the MCD's account,' the AAP leader added. He also said the BJP had claimed that having the same party at the Centre and in Delhi would ensure better coordination and delivery. 'But even after the DMC Act was amended to give the Centre more powers, both the BJP-led central and state governments have failed. Their words and actions are miles apart,' Narang said.
