DMK to commence membership drive on June 20
Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin will personally meet party functionaries from all 234 Assembly constituencies as part of the programme titled 'Udanpirappe Vaa'.
The initiative was announced by DMK organisation secretary R.S. Bharathi, who confirmed that Stalin plans to complete these constituency-level interactions before the party's annual Mupperum Vizha celebrations scheduled for September 17.
Under this programme, Stalin will interact directly with grassroots-level party workers -- excluding district secretaries, whom he will meet separately.
The meetings are being held at the party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai. The first session took place on Friday, where Stalin met functionaries from Chidambaram, Villupuram, and Usilampatti constituencies.
Sharing a message on X, Stalin wrote, 'To reach out to the people with the achievements of the government, to defeat those who are desperate to bring down Tamil Nadu, and to boost the party's robust structure -- Udanpirappe Vaa.'
The Chief Minister is being accompanied during these interactions by a panel that includes R.S. Bharathi, party spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan, joint organisation secretary Anbagam Kalai, and deputy organisation secretaries S. Austin and Thayagam Kavi.
Each meeting was originally planned to last five minutes, but several interactions were extended as Stalin engaged actively with the cadre.
According to party sources, Stalin came prepared with detailed performance reports of each functionary, which formed the basis for his questions and discussions. He also sought suggestions and feedback to strengthen preparations for the 2026 Assembly polls.
In a notable gesture, each participant received a signed copy of Stalin's autobiography 'Ungalil Oruvan' during the meeting. An 'opinion box' has been placed at the venue to collect written feedback from those who wish to share ideas or concerns they were unable to voice during the meeting.
'We will carefully review all the inputs we receive,' Bharathi said.
Stalin also reportedly enquired about the level of coordination between local functionaries and district secretaries, indicating a focus on improving intra-party communication.
The next round of meetings will resume on June 17.
Stalin is expected to be in Thanjavur on June 15 and 16 for official engagements. The DMK president has already urged party cadres to intensify efforts at the grassroots level and ensure that the INDIA bloc secures at least 200 of the 234 Assembly seats in the next state elections.

"The idea is to chart progress in every sector and ensure Uttar Pradesh makes the highest contribution to the nation's development," he said. "CM Yogi will take the essence of these presentations to create a roadmap for moving forward till 2047. Our aim is for Uttar Pradesh to play a decisive role in making India the world's most developed country, a global leader, and the foremost economy," he added. Highlighting technological improvements, Singh, who is also the Transport Minister, said, "Earlier, getting a permit was a major hassle. Now, even at night, you can apply through your mobile phone, and the Transport Department will issue it online. Our Vision 2047 addresses issues of fuel, pollution, and road safety. By then, vehicles will not only run on roads but also fly and operate on water." Minister Anil Rajbhar told IANS, "This has been a very meaningful discussion. Several respected MLAs have offered valuable suggestions. All ministers presented their department's schemes in depth on the Assembly floor. It is truly a historic moment for the state." Speaking to IANS, Minister Ashish Patel said, "Only leaders with a big vision can bring forward such a document. This 24-hour continuous discussion, with participation from all Assembly and Council members, is undoubtedly commendable." Minister Sanjay Nishad stated that CM Yogi's vision for 2047 shows how India can "only become a leading global economy if Uttar Pradesh advances." Suresh Kumar calls for urgent reform of government schools in Karnataka
BENGALURU: BJP MLA and former primary and secondary education minister of Karnataka, S Suresh Kumar, has warned that the state risks 'losing an entire generation' unless it overhauls its entire government school system. 'Education is the true strength to uplift the downtrodden,' he said, urging the legislature to treat education reform as an urgent priority rather than a distant goal. In an interview with The New Indian Express, Kumar highlighted a troubling reality. It's the lower middle class and poor families that are spending nearly 20% of their income on private schooling because they fear government schools cannot deliver. 'Ironically, many private schools are worse. We must restore faith in our government institutions,' he stressed. His vision includes setting up a model school in every gram panchayat, offering quality education from LKG to Class 12. 'No child should be denied education because of poverty or geography,' he added. Citing his visit to a government school in Wayanad, Kerala, Kumar said its quality stunned him. 'If Kerala can do it, so can Karnataka. What we lack is not potential, but political will,' he asserted. Though he has not yet visited Delhi's much-praised AAP model schools, Kumar said the state should at least begin discussions in the Assembly to chart a reform roadmap. On the state of teaching staff, Kumar offered a blunt assessment: 25% are outstanding, 10% unfit and 65% 'fence-sitters'. The solution, he said, lies in empowering the best teachers to inspire the rest, backed by a full SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis of the system. Kumar also cited the example of philanthropist Dr Venkatappa, who pledged Rs 6 crore to build a modern school in Channapatna, but ultimately spent Rs 14 crore when costs escalated. 'Such heroes should be celebrated and supported,' he said. The former minister's call has drawn a mixed response. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acknowledged the importance of the issue and agreed it merits an exclusive discussion in the Assembly.
