Odisha student battling for life following self-immolation, says sexual assault complaint against professor went unheard
Assistant professor Samir Kumar Sahu heading the education department in Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore district was arrested while principal of the college Dilip Ghosh was placed under suspension with the Mohan Majhi government facing intense criticism from Opposition political parties.
The girl attempted suicide during a student protest over the inaction on her sexual harassment complaint. She was rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where doctors found she had suffered 90% burn injuries. Two male students, who tried to save her, were also admitted with burn injuries.
The situation escalated after the girl repeatedly accused Professor Sahu of sexual harassment, alleging that he had threatened to sabotage her academic record if she did not comply with his demands. Although an internal committee was formed to look into the matter, no concrete action was taken for a prolonged period, sparking student protests.
There were allegations that Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi had been informed about the sexual harassment complaint but no action followed. College authorities dismissed the allegations, stating that the internal committee had not found any substantial evidence to support the complaint.
Her classmates and other college students charged that there was no student representation in the internal committee while colleagues of accused teachers tried to suppress the matter.
Meanwhile, the Higher Education department had constituted a high level inquiry committee to look into all aspects of the incident.
The BJD held a press conference holding college authorities, the police, and Mr. Sarangi responsible. The party said the student on July 1 had submitted a written complaint alleging that a lecturer had demanded sexual favours from her.
'However, the principal did not take the allegation seriously. As a result of the principal's inaction, the student was compelled to approach the police. When she failed to get justice there, she personally met Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi and shared her distress. Pratap Sarangi has also admitted this interaction in the media,' the party said.
Earlier this year, a Nepalese student was found dead in her hostel room on the campus of a private university after repeated complaints against male classmate were overlooked.

KIIT's unlawful acts led to suicides: UGC panel
NEW DELHI: The fact-finding committee constituted by the University Grants Commission (UGC) has held KIIT Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar, responsible for the suicide of two students earlier this year, stating that "illegal and unlawful activity by the university" led to one of the deaths and that the administration's actions "amount to criminal liability. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now " Along with these findings, the committee has issued a set of strong recommendations, based on which the commission is contemplating a freeze on the university's expansion and departmental action against erring officials, among others. The UGC committee, chaired by Professor Nageshwar Rao, submitted its report on May 20, 2025, after campus visits, stakeholder interactions, and detailed analysis. The report cited the university's failure to act lawfully on sexual harassment complaints, inadequate hostel facilities, excessive student intake, and use of brute force on students as key failings contributing to the incidents. The committee's observations and findings include serious lapses in infrastructure and governance. It found that hostel facilities were "substandard" with "three students put in a small room" and female international students accommodated without cultural considerations. It also noted that complaints of sexual harassment were ignored or illegally compromised, that the administration forcibly removed Nepalese students without support, and that security personnel used physical aggression against students. The university, it said, prioritised its "reputation of university over regulations, law of land and international relations of the country." Observing that members of the internal complaints committee (ICC) and senior administrative personnel of the university "are liable for criminal punishment as per law", the report stated, "... university's internal complaints committee (ICC) failed to take lawful action in reported sexual harassment cases. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now There was no transparency that protocols for investigation were followed. The girl had made complaints to the administration twice much before this tragic incident. In both the complaints, they decided to go for illegal compromise... The university has the power to punish the boy even when the first complaint was lodged. Instead of punishment, they favoured the boy by pushing forced illegal compromise with the girl. Later on, this has led to suicide. This suicide case could have been averted." On Feb 16, Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year BTech student from Nepal, was found dead in her hostel room. The report also called for departmental action against ICC members who acted in violation of rules. "Had KIIT University taken action to decide the reported harassment case as per law in the first case, the tragedy could have been avoided," the report stated. On May 2, another Nepalese undergraduate student was found dead in her hostel room at KIIT.

Five women from Nepal being trafficked to Kuwait rescued
Bahraich: The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has rescued five Nepali women from being trafficked to Kuwait via Delhi. SSB's anti-human trafficking unit intercepted the group at the Rupaidiha check post on the Indo-Nepal border on Friday. According to commandant of the 42nd Battalion of the SSB, Ganga Singh Udawat, the women, aged between 18 and 20, were stopped for questioning when officers noticed them traveling together in a suspicious manner. During interrogation, one of the women revealed that she had previously worked in Kuwait as a domestic helper for Arab families and was being paid well. She claimed that due to demand for more workers, she was taking others along. However, none of them possessed any valid travel documents. When asked, they said they were supposed to receive their documents in Delhi, raising further suspicion of trafficking. Following intense questioning and verification, the SSB found that the women were likely victims of a human trafficking operation. All five were handed over to their respective families. He said that in regular meetings with Nepalese counterparts, they report around 20 similar cases every month.

Puri Teen Set Afire Ran With Hands Tied, Mouth Gagged, Witness Tells NDTV
Puri: The 15-year-old girl set on fire in Odisha's Puri yesterday was running on the road as the flames burned her skin away. Her hands were tied and her mouth gagged as she ran through a neighbourhood, her eyes screaming for help. Dukhishyam Senapati, an eyewitness who helped douse the flames and contacted the girl's family, recounted the horrifying sight he witnessed in an interview with NDTV. "The girl was on fire when she came running towards my house. Her hands were tied and she had suffered serious burns. My wife, daughter and I doused the flames and gave her new clothes. Then, I spoke to her. She told me she lived in a nearby village." Asked if he had heard any screams before he spotted the girl, he said the criminals had tied up the girl's hands and gagged her mouth. "We heard nothing. She was gagged, and her hands were tied. She told me that three men on two bikes forcibly brought her here, poured kerosene and set her on fire," he said. According to the preliminary investigation, three men on a bike waylaid the girl, forcibly took her to a riverbank and then set her on fire. The girl somehow managed to escape the clutches of the criminals and started running; she was still on fire. The criminals fled the spot and are on the run. The girl has suffered 70 per cent burns and was airlifted to AIIMS Delhi for treatment. Mr Senapati said the girl was in a lot of pain and could only tell him that three men had set her on fire. "I also went and looked around for the attackers, but they had fled. I then contacted the girl's family and called the police. We then took her to the nearby community health centre from where she was shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar," he said. The shocking incident in Puri follows the self-immolation of a college student in Odisha's Balasore district to protest sexual assault by a faculty member and inaction by the college authorities. The Balasore student died of her severe burn injuries. The Puri teen was airlifted to AIIMS Delhi for better treatment today. Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena told the media that a green corridor was emptied to take the patient from AIIMS Bhubaneswar to the Biju Patnaik International Airport. The ambulance covered the 11 km distance within 12 minutes and an air ambulance flew her to the national capital. "The patient's condition is stable, and her blood pressure, which was low yesterday, has improved. It's safe to transfer her," AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Ashutosh Biswas told reporters before her departure. The girl can speak now and police have recorded her statement and stepped up their investigation. Her mother has registered a complaint, in which she has said the teen had dropped out of school and her father is a motor mechanic. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi has said he is "deeply saddened" by the Puri incident and that he would pray to Lord Jagannath for the girl's speedy recovery. The Opposition BJD has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led state government. Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has said this incident has taken place within a week of the Balasore tragedy. "Such unthinkable incidents against women are now being reported almost daily across Odisha. These are not stray cases of violence. These incidents occurring with shocking regularity point to a deep systemic failure of governance. It shows that criminals have become emboldened under the present government and are not worried about being punished. It shows how Odisha is becoming highly unsafe for women due to government inaction and political patronage," he said. "Will the Odisha Govt wake up from this deep slumber and take speedy action so that the criminals are arrested? And more importantly will the government respond so that such incidents are not repeated? The girls and women of Odisha await a response," Mr Patnaik added.
