Maheshwar Rao appointed as new chief commissioner of Bengaluru civic body
Rao, who currently serves as the Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), will now hold additional charge as the BBMP Chief Commissioner.
Rao replaces Tushar Giri Nath, who has been posted as the Additional Chief Secretary in the Urban Development Department. Nath will concurrently hold the charge of Additional Chief Secretary (Home) and BBMP Administrator, following the retirement of Umashankar S R on April 30.
The government notification further clarified that the posts of BBMP Chief Commissioner and BBMP Administrator are now deemed equivalent in status and responsibilities to the cadre post of Additional Chief Secretary, in line with the provisions under the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) rules.

Bengaluru has been without an elected municipal body or mayor for over five years. The last elections for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) were held in August 2015, and the council's term ended in September 2020.
Elections, originally due in 2020, have been repeatedly postponed, with officials citing reasons such as the Covid-19 pandemic, delays in ward delimitation, and disputes over reservation of wards.
In February this year, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar urged party members and leaders to gear up for the upcoming local body elections in the state, including the long-pending Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) polls, saying they could be announced at any time.
On the BBMP elections, he noted that the legislative panel reviewing the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, chaired by MLA Rizwan Arshad, had gathered public feedback and was expected to submit its report soon. "Polls can be declared at any moment, so we must be fully prepared," Shivakumar said, adding that he would form region-specific committees for the local body elections, including zilla panchayats, taluk panchayats, and municipal corporations. These committees, led by the party's working presidents and vice presidents, would visit different regions before March to oversee coordination, seat reservations, candidate selection, and report their findings, he added.

Govt doubles pension for JP senanis
Patna: The govt on Wednesday decided to double the pension amount for 'JP senanis'—the political activists who had been imprisoned during the Emergency for supporting socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan-led movement. The proposal was cleared at a cabinet meeting chaired by CM Nitish Kumar , who himself played a lead role in the 'JP movement' that began in 1974. "The pension for 'JP senanis', who had spent more than six months behind bars, has been raised to Rs 30,000 per month from Rs 15,000, and for those who served shorter prison terms, it has been hiked from Rs 7,500 to Rs 15,000," cabinet secretariat department's additional chief secretary S Siddharth said. "The JP senanis who participated in the JP movement and the subsequent emergency period between March 18, 1974 and March 21, 1977 will get double the amount as "samman pension" now," he said. There are altogether 3,354 JP senani who are currently getting pension in the state, a home dept official said. Nitish had launched the pension scheme named after Jayaprakash Narayan in 2009. Ganpati mandals in Mumbai want to dig roads and pay no penalty
Mumbai: Ganeshotsav mandals have demanded that govt authorities revoke the Rs 2,000 per hole fine levied upon mandals that dig public roads to erect mandaps. Naresh Dahibawkar, president of the Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti, said they held their annual Ganeshotsav preparatory meeting with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and senior state and civic officials on Wednesday. "BMC had recently raised the fine to Rs 15,000 per hole, which it then retracted. However, we want the old fine of Rs 2,000 per hole to also be abolished. In 2024, the then CM Eknath Shinde had removed that penalty. We want his practice to continue. After all, Ganeshotsav has been designated a state festival now," Dahibawkar said. HC dismisses plea for National Centre for Ageing in every district
Madurai: The Madras high court has dismissed a public interest litigation seeking the establishment of a National Centre for Ageing in all districts across the state. The petition, filed by K K Ramesh of Madurai, claimed that many elderly parents are neglected by their children and sent to homes that often lack proper facilities and medical care. He sought a court direction to set up such centres in every district. A division bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice A D Maria Clete noted that welfare schemes for senior citizens are already being implemented by both the state and central governments. The adequacy or number of such centres, the judges said, is a policy matter for the government to decide and cannot be determined by the court. The bench therefore dismissed the plea.
