Did AR Murugadoss just blame Salman Khan starrer Sikandar's failure on his inability to understand Hindi?

Pink Villa2 days ago
Director AR Murugadoss is gearing up for the release of his next Tamil movie, Madharasi, starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead. As part of the promotions, the director was seen at an event where he seemed to have indicated the failure of the Salman Khan starrer Sikandar, due to his inability to understand Hindi.
AR Murugadoss about Salman Khan's Sikandar failure
Talking about his recent venture, director AR Murugadoss said, 'When we make films in our mother tongue, it gives us strength. We know what is happening here. Today, there's a trend going and suddenly the audience gets connected with that trend.'
'When we shift language, we don't know what the youngsters are enjoying in that language. All we need is a script to believe it,' the director added.
Highlighting how it feels working in other languages, Murugadoss revealed that Telugu is somewhat easy for him to understand, but he doesn't know Hindi at all.
The filmmaker continued, 'For once, I can take up Telugu films, but Hindi may not work for us because after we write the script, they translate it into English. Then it is again translated into Hindi. When you make a film in an unknown language and place, it feels like you are handicapped. It is like you don't have hands.'
More about Sikandar
Sikandar, starring Salman Khan in the lead, is an action drama flick featuring the Bollywood superstar as Sanjay "Sikandar" Rajkot, the final heir of the Rajkot dynasty in Gujarat.
Leading a life with his wife Saisri, he performs his duties as a king, standing up for his people. However, a fateful event leads to the death of his wife and the queen regent.
As he is dealing with her loss, Sikandar learns his wife had decided to donate her organs to various people in Mumbai. Struck with grief, the king decides to safeguard everyone who received his wife's organs, with an old foe waiting to resurface.
The movie was massively dealt with negative reviews upon release and eventually tanked at the box office. It is available for streaming on Netflix.
AR Murugadoss' next
Following Sikandar's failure, director AR Murugadoss' next film would be Sivakarthikeyan starrer Madharasi. The action thriller is slated to release on September 5, 2025, with the first single, Salambala, releasing on July 31, composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

Netflix's new K-drama facing boycott in South Korea turns global smash hit with 100% Rotten Tomatoes score

Netflix recently dropped a new dystopian K-drama set in a fictional South Korea where the country's strict gun laws go out the window. Starring Kim Nam Gil, Kim Young Kwang, Park Hoon and others, this new show titled Trigger sparked massive boycott calls even before its release. Many believed it was loosely inspired by the recent shooting incident in Songdo, Incheon. The director denied any such link, but that didn't stop the speculation. Trigger stayed a burning topic even after it hit screens. Meanwhile, globally, it's become one of Netflix's most-watched non-English shows, beating titles like Letters From the Past, Angela, and more. Also read: Trigger Ending Explained: Does Kim Nam Gil's Netflix thriller have a happy ending and who survives the rampage of gunplay? The K-drama dropped on July 25 and instantly shot to the second spot in Netflix's non-English global category. Now in its second week, the show, despite slipping a few positions, still holds strong at number 4, pulling in over 2.9 million views this week and securing its spot in the top 10 across 20 countries, including regions like Romania, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kuwait, Thailand, and, surprisingly, even South Korea. The number one spot is still being held by Squid Game 3 for five weeks straight, and with 28.5 million hours viewed. The animated series My Melody & Kuromi: Season 1 sits at number 2, while fan-favourite anime DAN DA DAN: Season 2 lands at number 3. Trigger imagines a South Korea where guns are easily available, and all hell breaks loose when a revenge-driven man, on the edge of death with a terminal illness, decides to flood the country with illegal firearms. It theme of the show alone serves as a warning and leans hard into the kind of turmoil South Korean screens rarely show. Even though the series didn't get much attention at first, it slowly became a critic's favourite too and one of the rare K-dramas to receive a Rotten Tomatoes score. For now, it has a 100% rating. The massive global reaction just proves how strong K-dramas still are for the platform. Netflix has already been stepping up its K-content game, moving beyond the usual rom-coms and exploring more psychological, thriller, and action-driven stories. Mercy for None dropped earlier this year, and Beyond the Bar is lined up for August 2. Some feel the show exaggerates or sensationalises gun violence in a way Koreans aren't ready to digest just yet. Others, though, appreciated its raw tone, especially given the world inching closer to real wars. Earlier, a Chosun Biz report revealed that a 62-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shooting his own son with a makeshift shotgun while prepping for a birthday celebration. In a country where getting a gun license is nothing like it is in the US, the case hit a nerve. Trigger's director Kwon Oh-seung later said, 'I feel heartbroken about the recent unfortunate incident. I regret it. I hope that such things do not happen in the future,' adding that 'the connection between this incident and Trigger is a different issue.' Still, despite the clarification, the show's fan event live broadcast was suddenly scrapped—no reason given.

Son of Sardaar 2 vs Dhadak 2 box office clash: Can Siddhant Chaturvedi, Triptii Dimri romance spoil Ajay Devgn's party?

August begins on a promising note for Hindi cinema at the box office. Saiyaara is still doing great numbers even as it begins its third week at the theatres, while Mahavatar Narsimha has struck gold in the Hindi version. Now, two new releases will vie for the audience's attention and eyeballs this week. Ajay Devgn returns to comedy in the goofy caper Son of Sardaar 2, while Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri battle the world for their love in Dhadak 2. In this battle of sequels, will there be a winner? Or will Saiyaara continue to hold on to its numero uno position? Son of Sardaar 2 vs Dhadak 2 box office: Ajay Devgn's comedy collides with Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri's love saga. Son of Sardaar 2 vs Dhadak 2 box office Son of Sardaar 2 is an ambitious film for Ajay, who has had a stellar time at the box office in the last few years. Raid 2 and Drishyam 2 - both sequels to his hits - were big successes. And the makers of Son of Sardaar 2 would hope the actor can continue his form. Industry insiders say the film is poised for a rather low ₹7-crore opening on Friday. If word of mouth can lift the film, it may go up to ₹8 crore or beyond, but a double-digit opening looks unlikely for the comedy. That is a rather disappointing start, considering the first Son of Sardaar had opened at ₹10.7 crore, and that too back in 2012. Dhadak 2 is a love story with Triptii and Siddhant, two stars much fresher than Ajay. It is expected to take a smaller opening than the masala comedy. On top of that, Dhadak 2 is getting a staggered release with limited screens on Friday, which will gradually be increased given demand. Sources put Dhadak 2's opening estimates at around ₹2.50-3 crore. However, it may do better than Son of Sardaar 2 via word of mouth. Can it catch up to the Ajay Devgn-starrer by Sunday? It will be an uphill battle, but not an impossible one. Dhadak 2 is also lagging behind its predecessor. Dhadak, which starred Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, had opened at ₹8.7 crore in 2018. The Saiyaara effect It is highly likely that for the third week in a row, Saiyaara will be the top film at the Indian box office despite new releases. The Mohit Suri film earned ₹6.50 crore on Thursday, and it's likely to see a small jump and potentially again cross ₹7 crore on Friday. That puts it level with Son of Sardaar 2 as per estimates. And since the word of mouth is still good for the Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda romance, chances are it will do better over the weekend than both new releases. About Son of Sardaar 2 and Dhadak 2 Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, Son of Sardaar 2 stars Ajay with Mrunal Thakur, Ravi Kishan, Deepak Dobriyal, and Sanjay Mishra. It is the final release of Mukul Dev's career, who died earlier this year. The film is produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, N.R. Pachisia and Pravin Talreja. Dhadak 2, on the other hand, is directed by Shazia Iqbal and produced by Dharma Productions, Zee Studios and Cloud 9 Pictures. Apart from Siddhant and Triptii, it also stars Zakir Hussain and Saurabh Sachdeva. Both films have released in theatres on August 1.

‘Kingdom' day one box office: Vijay Deverakonda's film off to a decent start but fails to beat ‘Liger' record

Vijay Deverakonda's latest film, Kingdom, has gotten off to a decent start at the box office. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri of Jersey fame, the Telugu movie hit the screens on July 31, 2025. According to the movie collected ₹15.50 crore at the box office on its opening day. Kingdom has surpassed The Family Star, which collected ₹5.75 crore on its first day. The movie starred Mrunal Thakur opposite Deverakonda. Kingdom also went past the opening day figure of Khushi, the 2023 romantic drama featuring Deverakonda and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. However, Deverakonda's latest release slightly fell short of the opening-day result of Liger, which released in 2022. Directed by Puri Jagannadh, Liger, which amassed ₹15.95 crore on its first day of theatrical release, eventually went on to become a box office disaster. Kingdom is about a constable who sets out as an undercover spy to bring back his long lost brother. During his pursuit, he faces daunting challenges. Deverakonda was eyeing a comeback with Kingdom, after his previous outings — The Family Star and Khushi — performed underwhelmingly at the box office. However, his latest release has opened to mixed reviews. ALSO READ: Anirudh Ravichander says Vijay Deverakonda's 'Kingdom' will be a 'milestone film' in their careers The Hindu review of the movie said, 'Unlike many half-baked franchise-minded action dramas, Kingdom gives us a fairly complete arc while still laying the groundwork for a sequel. Despite a slightly uneven and unconvincing latter half about the hero and his crown, the film scores with its emotional ambition, immersive craft, and a striking Vijay Deverakonda performance that reminds you why he matters. If only it had held its nerve till the very end, this could have been a knockout.'
