Apple TV+ Programming Head Matt Cherniss on When ‘Severance' Might Return and Why the Streamer's Execs Didn't Cameo on ‘The Studio'

Apple TV+'s whopping 79 Emmy nominations — a new best — doesn't even tell the whole story of the streamer's solid batting average. While HBO Max (142) and Netflix (120) boasted more, it was also from a larger pool of submissions. Apple TV+ submitted from 26 programs this year, while Netflix sent in submissions from 113 shows and HBO Max had 86.
'It's great for the service,' Apple TV+ head of programming Matt Cherniss told Variety. 'I'm especially happy for all the talent that's involved in making these incredible series. All of the talent takes a leap of faith when they're deciding where to bring their shows, and I'm just thrilled that they're rewarded for believing in us as a home for all their hard work.'

Apple TV+'s haul included 'Severance,' which earned the most nominations this year at 27 (which means it also led all dramas), and 'The Studio,' which landed 23 nods — the most of any comedy. 'There's a lot of texts and calls flying back and forth,' Cherniss said. 'I wouldn't say that anyone goes into it expecting something like this. These are eight to 10 episodes for for the viewers, but this is years for all the creators involved. It's a great feeling for everyone, and for everyone here at Apple that has put their heart and soul in promoting these shows in marketing and giving everyone the support that they need.'
The success of 'Severance' came after a three-year gap between the show's first season and its second, due in part to the Hollywood strikes and other production delays. Asked whether Season 3 was on track, Cherniss said, 'I think everyone's just going to take a deep breath and enjoy where we're at. I know they're going as as quickly as they can. When you have the success that a show like 'Severance' has, you want to make sure you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time. But they're on it, and I think I'm feeling really good about where we're at.'
Does that mean another three-year delay? 'No one wants it to be another three year gap… I don't believe that we have a production start date yet, but we're moving in that direction,' he said. 'I'm as excited as everyone else to see where the series goes. I may have a few ideas about where it's heading, but I like to be surprised as much as anyone.'
As for 'The Studio,' the show pulled off four of the five comedy guest star noms: Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie and Martin Scorsese, all as versions of themselves. Cherniss credited creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for pulling off that caliber of cameos.
'Those are not easy, those cameos to come by inside of shows, and I think that everyone did it with a lot of joy,' he said. 'They went all in on those characters. And I think you really feel it inside the show.'
Other cameos included Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. But why no Apple execs like boss Tim Cook, Apple worldwide video heads Jamie Ehrlich and Zach Van Amburg, or even Cherniss himself? 'We're happy exactly where we are,' Cherniss said. 'I like where I sit.'
Among other nominations on Tuesday, Harrison Ford's first ever Emmy nod — thanks to Apple TV+'s 'Shrinking' — stood out. Meanwhile, exec producer David E. Kelley is busy at work on an entirely new story for Season 2 of 'Presumed Innocent,' which earned four noms. 'David has a great plan and a great story for season two, but I think we're keeping that under wraps for now,' Cherniss said.
Cherniss didn't have any news on further seasons of 'Pachinko' (which landed two nods for Season 2) or 'Dope Thief,' which earned a limited/anthology nom for Brian Tyree Henry. 'We all cheered as that moment came across this morning,' Cherniss said. 'He's so great in 'Dope Thief,' I think his performance is just amazing. That's a show that the audience really enjoyed as well. His performance was so deserving.'
As for what's next, Cherniss pointed to Jason Momoa's upcoming 'Chief of War,' as well as Season 4 of 'The Morning Show.' 'That show is always pushing boundaries and entertaining, and Season 4 is no different,' he said. 'They have fun with the subject matter. But I also think they always treat it with the the import that it deserves.'
And never forget, 'The Morning Show' sent a morning news anchor into space before 'CBS Mornings' did.
'That's a rarefied air when you can be as predictive as 'The Simpsons' is,' Cherniss quipped.

Emmys milestones: Kathy Bates makes history, Harrison Ford gets his due

The familiar faces amongst the 77th Emmy Award nominations are, in many cases, first-timers while others are making history for their contributions to the small screen's latest season. Marquee names and shows alike have milestones to celebrate after Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song announced the nominees on Tuesday for the Sept. 14 ceremony hosted by Nate Bargatze. Below, a roundup of milestones in the latest crop of contenders: Kathy Bates makes history as the oldest performer nominated for Lead Actress in a Drama Kathy Bates, a 15-time Emmy nominee and two-time winner, is certainly no stranger to awards, among them an Oscar win for 1990's 'Misery' and three subsequent nods from 1999 to 2020. But it's the role of Madeline 'Matty' Matlock in the CBS series 'Matlock' — not to be confused with the original Andy Griffith-led legal drama, though it's referenced in the remake — that snagged Bates her first Emmy nomination in nearly a decade, and at 77 years old. Bates, last nominated in 2016 for 'American Horror Story: Hotel,' now takes the title of the oldest lead drama actress nominee from the late Angela Lansbury, who was nominated at age 70 for 'Murder, She Wrote,' Variety reports. 'The Studio' is doing double time with record-breaking nominations Apple TV+'s 'The Studio,' starring Seth Rogen as the new head of a Hollywood studio, is tapped for 23 nominations total, making it the most-nominated freshman comedy series, according to Variety. That crown was previously worn by the streamer's 'Ted Lasso' and the 20 nominations it earned from its first season. 'The Studio' is also now tied with FX and Hulu's 'The Bear' for the most-nominated comedy. Beyoncé and Jay-Z will face off Husband and wife collaborators-turned-competitors Beyoncé and Jay-Z are both up for Outstanding Variety Special (Live). The former is tapped as both executive producer and performer for Netflix's 'Beyoncé Bowl,' her Christmas Day NFL halftime show, while the latter is nominated for executive producing Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl LIX halftime show. Beyoncé also helmed 'Beyoncé Bowl,' for which she scored a nod for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special. Harrison Ford earns his first Emmy nomination Harrison Ford may have conquered space, androids and temples of doom, but the Emmys have remained an untapped frontier until now. Just two days after ringing in his 83rd birthday, Ford, who currently stars in the 'Yellowstone' spinoff '1923,' was tapped for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy for his work as Paul in 'Shrinking,' another Apple TV+ offering. Other first-time Emmy nominees include 'Severance' breakouts Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry and Britt Lower; 'Nobody Wants This' stars Kristen Bell and Adam Brody; and Academy Award-winning filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard, as well as Zoë Kravitz and Anthony Mackie, who all appeared as themselves in 'The Studio.'

Why Dad Influencer 'Threw' His 7-Year-Old Son Off a Cliff

"This is NOT parental advice. This is NOT something I advise you try," wrote content creator Garrett Gee, who runs The Bucket List Family alongside his wife Jessica. A travel and family influencer has gone viral for unconventional method to help his son face his fears. Garrett Gee -- who runs the brand, The Bucket List Family, alongside his wife Jessica -- shared a video on Instagram, in which he threw his 7-year-old son Calihan, aka "Cali," off a cliff in Lake Powell to teach him how to cliff jump. In the viral video, which has amassed 3.6 million views since it was posted on Sunday, Gee and his son can be seen talking while on a small cliff, before it cuts to Gee grabbing his son from under his arms and tossing him into the water below. Cali screamed on the way down, and landed with a splash. He appeared to be happy while treading water, before his dad joined him and swam over as others can be heard cheering for Cali nearby. The clip then showed Cali jumping off the cliff without his father's help, with the 7-year-old leaping off the rock with his sister. "Most people won't love how we teach our kids how to cliff jump," Gee wrote over the clip, before opening up about why he did it in the first place in the caption. "This is NOT parental advice. This is NOT something I advise you try," he began. "Also, this is NOT something we've done with all of our kids. Each kid is quite different so the way we parent, discipline, and teach HOW TO CLIFF JUMP is quite different :)" "For sure 1st priority is safety. 2nd is learning that YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS. 3rd is HAVE FUN :)," Gee said, before further discussing the importance of safety. "Well speaking of the top priority, took our youngest Cali to a cliff height that we knew he would be safe. Really the biggest danger would be if he hesitated, didn't jump far out, and fell down the cliff side." "So to be extra safe, because he wanted to jump but was not feeling confident.. I threw him," he added. "Eventually a baby eagle needs to leave the be tossed out of the nest ;) and learn HE CAN FLY! But warning : teaching your kids to be brave starts to backfire when they become older and begin jumping from heights that you don't even dare!! /// BE SAFE OUT THERE! YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS! HAVE FUN! - @thebucketlistfamily." Fans and followers took to the comments section to react to the video. While some praised Gee for his method, others criticized him. One commenter asked Gee for more information. "Honest question, no judgement. Did he know he was going to be thrown?" the user asked, to which Gee replied, "YES. He had the choice to climb down, jump himself, or have me throw him. He chose to be thrown." "But regardless it was still scary for him," he added. "Scary for me too because I need to make sure he doesn't cling onto me and hit the cliffs and also make sure he hits the water feet first. Kinda tricky but I feel like it's part of the dad job description ;)." Meanwhile, another commenter said cliff jumping is "very very dangerous! Ask an ER doctor or nurse," before asking, "How do you reconcile that as a parent? "WTH is wrong with you 🤦‍♀️," another said. "He didn't look happy. He looked traumatized." However, there were many people who applauded Gee. "What I love so much about Cali is that he's the first to wanna try it! He might be scared but he's always first in line! Go buddy go!" a person wrote. "He chose to be thrown and they have built that trust all his life ♥️," another shared. Meanwhile, The Valley star Kristen Doute -- who recently welcomed a baby girl -- commented, writing, "👏👏❤️❤️ i want my daughter to try everything and be braver, bolder than I am. love this." Calihan is the youngest of Gee's three children he shares with his wife Jessica. According to The Bucket List Family's website, they describe themselves as "5 Family Travel Journalists." The Gee family launched their Instagram and YouTube channel in 2015 after they sold their Utah home and began traveling the world as a family. Per their website, the Gees lived "full-time on the road" for three years, visiting 65 countries together, before they moved into a bungalow in Hawaii. However, Garrett, Jessica, and their kids, Calihan, Dorothy, and Manilla, have continued to travel and go on family adventures together. Solve the daily Crossword
