‘Shankar Vilas RoB to be built with quality,' says Union Minister Pemmasani
GUNTUR: Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Pemmasani Chandrasekhar on Monday said the proposed Road over Bridge (RoB) at Shankar Vilas in Guntur would be built swiftly and to high standards, addressing safety and traffic concerns.
Speaking at a compensation distribution event held by the Guntur Municipal Corporation, he urged citizens to support the project and not be misled by misinformation.
He handed over `71 lakh in cheques to 21 property owners who agreed to the project. District Collector S Nagalakshmi, Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu, acting Mayor Sheikh Sajeela, MLAs Mohammad Naseer Ahmad, Galla Madhavi, Burla Ramana Janeyulu, and AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) Chairman Degala Prabhakar Rao were present.
Pemmasani said the current bridge, built in 1950, is structurally weak and delays emergency access to Guntur Government Hospital. The new ROB, approved under fast-track clearances by the Centre and State, will be 930 meters long—more than double the existing 436-meter bridge—and elevated from 5.9 to 9 meters to accommodate double-decker buses.
While rejecting proposals for a Railway Under Bridge at the current site due to technical constraints, he said the design allows for one in the future. The project includes a 60-ft underpass at GGH and a 44-ft underpass at Arundelpet 5th Lane. Road widening is underway from Hindu College Centre to Lodge Centre along the 120-ft Master Plan road.
Out of 134 affected structures, 36 owners have provided consent so far, including six who had filed court cases. Compensation is being given through cash for structures and Transferable Development Rights (TDR) bonds for land loss. Utility relocation is ongoing on a set timeline.
Local leaders from the TDP, BJP, and JSP expressed support, stating ROB will link East and West Guntur and contribute to the Vision 2047 goal of making Guntur a global city.

India Commits $20 Billion For Maritime Infrastructure Development: Sarbananda Sonowal
New Delhi: India has committed $20 billion for infrastructure development focused on enhancing multimodal logistics, port connectivity, and trade facilitation, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on Thursday. Delivering the keynote speech at the India Country Session in Oslo and highlighted India's growing maritime capabilities, including a favourable policy-induced investment environment, proven shipbuilding strength, circular economy efforts, and innovative financing plans to accelerate sectoral growth, he said: "Under the able and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is moving decisively toward the goals of Viksit Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat. These goals envisage India as a modern, self-reliant, inclusive, and globally engaged economy." In this journey, the maritime sector is central - not just as a driver of growth, but as an enabler of resilience, sustainability, and strategic connectivity. "India has launched wide-ranging efforts to expand port infrastructure, integrate logistics systems, and improve ease of doing business for the private sector. These reforms are already bearing fruit in the form of increased port efficiency, stronger cargo flows, and rising investor confidence," he said. The Shipping Minister also highlighted strengthening of maritime connectivity and supply chains with strategic corridors like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), the Eastern Maritime Corridor (EMC), and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). "India is working to become a credible and competitive alternative. India's maritime digital ecosystem is undergoing a transformation. Initiatives such as ONOP (One Nation-One Port Process), National Logistics Portal (Marine), and MAITRI – Virtual Trade Corridor are creating a unified national platform for port services and EXIM trade. "These efforts are improving operational transparency, reducing transaction time and building real-time data systems. We are also engaging with global partners to establish Virtual Trade Corridors that will digitally connect ports, enabling seamless cargo movement and reducing bottlenecks," said the minister.

Stop cattle slaughter for Bakrid, says Vishwa Prani Kalyana Mandali
Sri Dayananda Swami of the Vishwa Prani Kalyana Mandali has appealed to the Union and State governments to stop cattle slaughter during Bakrid festival across Karnataka. In a letter to the governments, he demanded that cattle slaughter and animal sacrifice be banned on Bakrid falling on Saturday (June 7 this year) and subsequent days as per provisions of the Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act 2020 and the Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959, Rules 1963 and Amendment Act 1975. He has attached copies of some Supreme Court and High Court orders in support of his demand. Members of the mandali, including Uttam Chand Jajed, Suresh Runawal, Ashok Nagore, Sukhveer Jain, and others have signed the letter.
