Woolworths quietly axes popular discount program - and Aussie shoppers are NOT happy

Daily Mail01-05-2025

Woolworths has come under fire for scrapping a popular discount program with loyal shoppers now threatening to cancel their subscriptions.
From June 1, Everyday Extra members will no longer be entitled to a ten per cent discount on one Big W shop per month.
Shoppers were shocked after a subscriber shared a screenshot of their Everyday Rewards app stating the discount would cease to apply from May.
'I wouldn't have noticed it if you didn't say something,' one shopper wrote on the post in the Everyday Rewards Discount Facebook page.
Members can access Woolworths Rewards for free, though Everyday Extra rewards are available at a cost of $7 per month or $70 per year.
Other shoppers vowed to cancel their subscriptions as the benefits no longer justified the cost of the popular membership program.
'Hope everyone cancels their membership over this... Not worth it anymore,' one said.
'I shop at BIG W [because] of this discount. Now I won't bother as Kmart is closer,' another wrote.

Shoppers questioned whether the cost of the Everyday Extra subscription was still worth it
Woolworths formally announced the change on Wednesday.
'We're writing to let you know that, unfortunately, from Sunday June 1 2025, the BIG W monthly ten per cent off discount will no longer be part of the Everyday Extra benefits,' an email to customers said.
The announcement came as a blow to shoppers who use the membership to afford big seasonal shops during the Christmas and Easter periods.
'This was great at Christmas time, guess it's a box of choccies now for everyone', one shopper said.
A spokesperson for Everyday Rewards told Daily Mail Australia annual subscribers can request an immediate cancellation of their memberships for a 'pro-rata' refund.
This means annual subscribers will be entitled to a refund for any unused time derived from the cost of the annual upfront fee. Monthly subscribers can cancel their subscriptions ahead of the change on June 1.
One shopper said they planned to join the Coles Plus platform instead.
'[I] have been getting good offers from Coles and am going to try theirs for a year. I was only thinking of staying at Woolies because we got the monthly discount at BIG W too,' they said.
A Woolworths Group spokesperson said the vast majority of discounts accessed through the program were done at Woolworths rather than BIG W, adding the outlet will continue to focus on keeping prices low.
'Over the past few years, BIG W has been focused on delivering more value to customers every day, reducing prices on thousands of products across their range and keeping prices down,' the spokesperson said.
'For example, 80 per cent of BIG W's clothing range is now under $20 and 50 per cent of BIG W's home range is under $20.'
In place of the Everyday Extra discount, the Woolworths Group will introduce subscriber-only monthly deals at BIG W from June 1.
'We will also continue to evolve the Everyday Extra program to give members new opportunities to earn and save,' the spokesperson added.
'Everyday Extra still provides great value to subscribers, with 10 per cent off one shop a month at Woolworths Supermarkets and 2x Everyday Rewards points on every shop at both Woolworths and BIG W, helping members save up to $50 a month for a monthly subscription fee of $7.'
