Workers lay siege to Virudhunagar panchayat union office demanding job under MGNREGS

The Hindu19-05-2025
Residents of Chathrareddiyapatti panchayat and farmers affiliated to All India Agricultural Workers Union on Monday laid siege to Virudhunagar Panchayat Union Office protesting against not non-provision of jobs under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in the district.
The protesters said they had been visiting the panchayat union office seeking employment after the panchayat failed to give them jobs. Despite visiting the union office for the last four days, officials were not properly responding to their plea.
They also charged one of the employees at the union with demanding bribe money from the workers to allocate employment under the scheme.
Block Development Officer Srinivasan held talks with the agitators and promised them that he would visit the village on Tuesday and give them jobs under the scheme. He also assured them of an inquiry into the bribery charges and promised to select a field supervisor from among the workers.
Union district functionaries S. Poongothai, M. Sundarapandian and K. Rajendran, were present.

Employees' unions owing allegiance to the Congress organised a protest in front of the Secretariat on Wednesday accusing the Left Democratic Front government of pushing the welfare of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme workers to the back burner. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, who inaugurated the protest, demanded that the government increase the number of working days to a minimum of 200 per year and also bring the workers under the ambit of the social welfare and security net. He demanded that the government institute ESI and EPF pensions for the workers, a majority of whom are women from the lowest economic strata in society. INTUC State president R. Min directs officials to resolve agri labourers grievances

Mandya: Agriculture minister N Cheluvarayaswamy, who is the Mandya district in-charge, has directed officials to prioritise resolving the grievances of agricultural labourers. He said petitions submitted to the district administration must be addressed swiftly in accordance with the rules, and a report on the action taken should be filed. Speaking at a meeting in the zilla panchayat, the minister instructed officials that if matters remain unresolved, they should be escalated to the deputy commissioner and chief executive officer. On the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), he pointed out that though the scheme guarantees 100 days of wage employment, the central govt releases funds only for approved work days. Providing 100 days of work without wage allocation would create future problems, he warned. Deputy commissioner Kumara highlighted that within Mandya city limits, over 2,000 poor families remain without housing sites. Providing homes for them would require 35 acres, which is not available within the city. However, land under gram panchayat jurisdiction is available within a 10-km radius, and a request has been sent to govt to consider this as a special case. He also noted that upgrading primary health centres to community health centres would be undertaken as per govt norms. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Villagers push for resolution on preventing utilisation of abandoned quarries in Tiruppur as dump yards at Grama Sabha meetings

Residents of villages surrounding Tiruppur Corporation on Friday pushed for adoption of a resolution at the Grama Sabha meeting conducted as part of Independence Day celebration to prevent any move by the civic body to dump unsegregated wastes in abandoned quarries. The resolution said the act of the Tiruppur Corporation amounted to violation of entitlement of citizens to unpolluted environment enshrined in the Constitution. The dumping of wastes had caused pollution of soil and water and burning of the wastes had caused air pollution, said R. Satish Kumar, State Secretary of the Legal Wing of Tamilnadu Farmers' Protection Association. The resolution urged the Corporation to pay compensation to the village panchayats for having caused air, water and soil pollution through the dumping of wastes in the quarries. Other resolutions highlighted by the participants of Grama Sabha meetings encompassed replacement of palm oil with coconut or gingelly oil for distribution to the public through fair price shops; fixation of adequate Minimum Support Price for farm produces; empowering village panchayats to handle wild boar menace; dovetailing of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for giving a thrust to farming; adequate godown infrastructure at procurement centres; raising of per-kg raising charges for broiler chicken to ₹15; waiver of farm loans by Central Cooperative Banks; fixation of ₹50 per litre for cow milk and ₹75 for buffalo milk; exemption of agriculture from international agreements; use of genetically modified crops only after bio-safety tests; and restoration of basic customs duty on crude and refined vegetable oils to 20%.
