HBO announces casting for Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, Hagrid in upcoming Harry Potter series

Express Tribune14-04-2025

HBO has officially confirmed the first batch of actors for its upcoming Harry Potter TV series.
Among the newly announced cast members are John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. These actors were previously reported to be in talks for the roles, but their casting has now been officially confirmed.
Additionally, Luke Thallon, known for his work in Leopoldstadt, has joined the series in the recurring role of Quirinus Quirrell. Paul Whitehouse, famous for The Fast Show, will appear as Argus Filch in a recurring capacity.
Francesca Gardiner, the showrunner and executive producer, alongside director and executive producer Mark Mylod, expressed excitement about the talented cast, saying, "We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon, and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell, and Filch. We're delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can't wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life."
While the main roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione have yet to be cast, HBO launched an open casting call last fall, receiving over 30,000 submissions for the coveted parts. The series is expected to begin filming this summer.
Described as a "faithful adaptation" of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series, the show will explore every aspect of the wizarding world. Each season will introduce Harry Potter's magical adventures to both new and existing fans.
The series is written and executive produced by Gardiner, with Mylod directing several episodes. The project is a collaboration between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television, with Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman serving as executive producers.

HBO's 'The Mortician' explores David Sconce's funeral industry scandal and cremation crimes

HBO's The Mortician, a new three-part documentary series, reveals the disturbing true story of David Sconce, a crematorium operator who went to prison in 1989 for grossly mishandling human remains. The series, which premiered on June 1, features accounts from former employees, traumatised clients, and Sconce himself, offering a rare insight into one of the most unsettling scandals in US funeral history. In the 1980s, Sconce ran Lamb Funeral Home in Pasadena, California. He increased profits by cremating multiple bodies at once—often breaking bones to fit more in the chamber—and delivering mixed ashes to grieving families. His methods raised suspicions when he completed far more cremations than competitors at lower prices. A WWII veteran eventually reported the smell of burning flesh near Sconce's desert facility, triggering an investigation. Sconce pled guilty in 1989 to charges including mishandling remains and extracting gold fillings from corpses. He served time and was later returned to prison in 2013 for violating probation. He was released on parole in 2023. Former staff detail shocking practices, such as removing clothing and jewellery from bodies for resale. Sconce's ex-wife recalls catching him cracking teeth with a hammer and collecting gold in a cup labelled 'Au'. Sconce remains unapologetic, dismissing concerns over mixed remains and stating, 'That's not a person anymore.' Director Joshua Rofé includes Sconce's voice to provoke reflection, asserting that confronting such behaviour is essential for understanding the darker sides of humanity.

Arabella Stanton hailed as perfect Hermione for Harry Potter series, after audition tape goes viral

An audition tape featuring Arabella Stanton, the actress cast as Hermione Granger in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series, has captivated fans and drawn widespread comparisons to the original portrayal by Emma Watson. The 11-year-old Stanton, who has already gained acclaim for her lead role as Matilda in London's West End production of Matilda the Musical from 2023 to 2024, appears in the resurfaced footage showing her auditioning for the role of Hermione. While it is unclear if the video is her official audition for the Harry Potter series, viewers on social media were quick to praise her performance, noting striking similarities to Watson's interpretation of the character. On TikTok, fans expressed astonishment, with one user commenting, 'Are we sure she wasn't lip syncing Emma Watson's audio? That was uncanny.' Another wrote, 'Yeah that's Hermione Granger 100 percent. The facial expressions, the attitude, the tone. Nailed it.' Others echoed the sentiment, stating the clip should put any doubts about her casting 'to rest.' Fans have also compared Stanton's performance to a blend of Emma Watson and Jenna Ortega, applauding her for capturing the essence of the beloved book character. 'She's literally PERFECT for this role! I wasn't so excited they were remaking HP but I'm kinda looking forward to it now,' commented one viewer. The casting for the highly anticipated series was announced earlier this week, with Dominic McLaughlin set to play Harry Potter and Alastair Stout cast as Ron Weasley. Creator J.K. Rowling praised the young leads as 'wonderful,' stating she 'couldn't be happier' with the choices. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod praised the extensive casting process led by Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, saying, 'The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.' The series will also feature veteran actors including Nick Frost, John Lithgow, and Paul Whitehouse, adding further excitement to the project. The enthusiasm surrounding Stanton's audition tape highlights the anticipation and high expectations for HBO's new take on the Harry Potter universe.

Hunter Schafer considered for Princess Zelda role in live-action adaptation of 'The Legend of Zelda'

A live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is officially in development and scheduled to debut in cinemas on 26 March 2027. While no casting has been formally announced, industry insider Daniel Richtman reports that Hunter Schafer is being considered for the role of Princess Zelda. Schafer, best known for her portrayal of Jules Vaughn in HBO's Euphoria, has drawn attention for her resemblance to the iconic character. Her performances in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Cuckoo further strengthen her candidacy. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2023, Schafer responded to fan casting online: 'That would be so cool. I played that video game a bunch when I was a kid. That's such a good game.' While her casting remains speculative, voice actor Patricia Summersett, who plays Zelda in the video games, has also expressed interest in taking on the live-action role. Directed by Wes Ball and produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, alongside Joe Hartwick Jr. via Oddball Entertainment, this adaptation is among the most anticipated upcoming video game films.
