Avengers star unrecognisable in genre-bending horror film now on Amazon Prime

The Cabin in the Woods, starring an almost unrecognisable Chris Hemsworth, is now available to watch for free on Amazon Prime Video for anyone who has an Amazon subscription
For those who fancy a night in, huddled on the settee with a cushion at the ready to hide behind, there's a top-notch horror film now available to stream for free on Amazon Prime.
Horror films might not be everyone's cup of tea, but when they're done well, they can take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride filled with suspense, relief after a scare, and adrenaline pumping through your veins. They often have a more profound impact on your emotions than your typical action-adventure flick.

If you're in the mood for a fright, then look no further than 2012's critically acclaimed horror The Cabin in the Woods. The film features a barely recognisable Chris Hemsworth and follows a group of university students as they head off to a secluded cabin for what they hope will be a pleasant getaway.

However, their trip quickly turns into a nightmare as they find themselves battling for survival against a relentless onslaught of terrifying creatures in a classic horror setting.
Minor spoilers ahead - but what sets this plot apart is that unbeknownst to the group, their time in the cabin has been meticulously planned out, as they unwittingly become part of a ritualistic sacrifice designed to appease ancient beings threatening to destroy the earth, all overseen by a facility full of bureaucrats dedicated to ensuring their sacrifice, reports the Mirror US.
The film is revolutionary in its approach, cleverly utilising traditional horror tropes but giving them a fresh twist and deeper meaning.
The movie boasts an impressive cast, including Thor's Chris Hemsworth, Grey's Anatomy's Jesse Williams, House of Cards' Kristen Connolly, and The Shape of Water's Richard Jenkins, who play the five students at the centre of the story.
This film breaks new ground by cleverly reworking traditional horror tropes to reveal the underlying themes, earning widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics. With a 92% 'certified fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's a must-watch.

One Google reviewer gave it a 5-star rating, saying: "One of the greatest films ever and not just because it cleverly borrows from HP Lovecraft and others to tell of the horror behind the horror we're so used to."
They added: "Well-written, produced, acted, scored and filmed, TCITW is a winner on so many levels, the less you know about it before screening it, the better. It fully transcends the genre of "horror" plus offers a cute peek into the myths of other cultures. But ultimately, it is NOT what you expect it to be about at all."
Another reviewer praised the film, saying: "I love this movie, I thought it was smart and interesting with twists thrown in that I never saw coming."
The film is now available to stream for free on Amazon Prime Video for subscribers.

Horror film with ‘greatest twist of all time' now available to stream

If you're a horror fan who gets a kick out of a good twist, this 2000s Nicole Kidman film is right up your street. Starring Oscar-winning Australian-American actress Kidman, 58, in the lead role of Grace, The Others is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, following a woman living on a family estate in the Channel Islands with her two photosensitive children. Set during World War II, Grace is awaiting news on her missing husband while attempting to protect her children from harm by the sun due to their rare disease. Things take a sinister turn, however, when Grace's mother, Anne (Alakina Mann), claims she is seeing ghosts, and while Grace initially brushes the spookiness off as their staff playing tricks, she soon comes to realise something far more menacing is at play. The 2001 supernatural flick is famous for its huge plot twist, which viewers have long branded one of the best in cinema. Thanks to its cast's performances and gripping story, The Others was a box office smash, grossing $210million (£182m) worldwide on a $17m (14.7m) budget. It was lauded by critics, earning 15 nominations and eight wins at the 16th Goya Awards, and becoming the first English-language film without a word of Spanish dialogue to triumph in the best film category at Spain's Goya Awards. Kidman was also recognised in other best actress categories for her role, including at the Golden Globes. Ultimately, the Alejandro Amenábar-directed horror is highly regarded as not just one of the 2000s' best movies but, for many, the greatest horror ever made. As for what fans have had to say, The Others, which was shot in northern Spain, has a respectable 77% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as well as 84% from critics. Among the 250,000+ reviews, user Ry H branded it with 4.5 stars as recently as July 2025, writing: 'My favorite horror movie ever with one of the biggest twists that I never saw coming.' 'The Others lives up to the unpredictability hype, you can't guess what's happening. The characters are incredibly well-written. Their decisions, the plot makes sense until everything gets a new meaning', writes Mate P. 'Has to be the best suspense movie of all time, period. The acting and filming are fantastic', echoes Josh K. Julian S agrees: 'THE OTHERS finds Kidman at her most mesmerizing, carrying a chilling slow-burn thriller that builds to a twist so sharp, it leaves you breathless.' 'This one still holds up as one of the great supernatural thrillers. Great twist, wonderful acting, especially by the children', pens Jason W. Others praise the fright flick for its ability to build tension and create a dread-filled atmosphere, with many compelled to watch for a second time after the twist is uncovered, forcing them to rethink everything they thought they knew. More Trending The Others is one of many of Kidman's projects in the horror and thriller genres, as she's also had roles in The Invasion (2007), Before I Go to Sleep (2014), and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), to name a few. She recently starred in 2025's Holland, alongside Matthew Macfadyen and Gael García Bernal, playing a mother who, upon unearthing her husband's infidelity, discovers her picture-perfect life was full of secrets. Of course, Kidman also famously plays the lead in Nine Perfect Strangers, a thriller drama series that recently dropped a second season. The Others is available to stream now on Amazon Prime Video. Amazon Prime's ‘amazing' new crime thriller jumps to top of streaming charts

The Assassin, which was released on Amazon Prime Video last month, has leapt to the top of the platform's streaming charts. The action thriller stars Keeley Hawes as titular assassin Julie, who reunites with her estranged son (Edward, played by Freddie Highmore) after he tracks her down with questions about her past. The pair soon become entangled in a high-octane, high-stakes conspiracy when her past catches up with her. With a huge target on their backs, mother and son are forced to go on the run, in an ambitious plot Metro's own Sabrina Barr describes as 'Mamma Mia combined with Taken.' Released on July 25, the series earned rave reviews for its 'entertaining action' and shocking twists. This has helped The Assassin to fend off heavy hitters like Clarkson's Farm, The Summer I Turned Pretty and Neighbours in the battle of the UK streaming charts. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video As per a report by Flixpatrol, The Assassin has become the most streamed piece of entertainment on Amazon Prime, beating 2023's Barbie and the Eddie Murphy vehicle The Pickup on its journey to supremacy. The Assassin is currently sitting at a 92% 'Fresh' rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with Empire Magazine praising its 'cutthroat action' and 'cutting' dynamic between its stars. Elsewhere, The Guardian described it as 'so much fun,' while The Telegraph called it 'Mamma Mia! with a sniper rifle.' While the audience score is more divided at 38%, those who enjoyed the show have responded well to its dark sense of humour and explosive action. 'Super fun. If you liked the tourist you'll like this series. Dark quirky humour with lots of action. This isn't for everyone you'll need to be able to think on your feet to enjoy the ride!' wrote Rotten Tomatoes user Kay M. 'This was fun, exciting and thrilling. I wished it lasted longer,' said Yeremiah A. Sas B chimed in: 'I loved this – the acting is amazing, the characters and situations fairly hilarious.. it's a dark comedy! More please!' Speaking on the blend of comedy and action, Freddie told Metro: '[The humour's] not too broad or too silly, but it complements the seriousness of it and gives it a bit of texture and nuance, and also keeps it quite real,' Freddie outlines. 'The characters are all accessible and approachable and definitely make mistakes. Even with Keeley's character, who's incredibly accomplished at what she does, the show doesn't try to make her impossibly perfect. 'I think a part of that is the sense of humour and that British dose of self-deprecation.' Meanwhile, Line of Duty and Finding Alice star Keeley has weighed in on her turn as the titular assassin, describing herself as 'basically the new Tom Cruise.' More Trending Reacting to the description of her character as a 'perimenopausal James Bond' she told The Observer: 'When I saw that line in the script, I howled with laughter. You even glimpse her popping HRT pills. I don't think I've ever seen that in a drama before. Going into the specifics of her action hero training she revealed: 'I had weapons training. There's a scene where I assemble a sniper rifle in a slick way. It's worryingly easy, actually. Even if you put the components of a rifle in front of me now, a year later, I could probably do it quite quickly. It's a bit like riding a bike.' 'Amazon Prime war drama is dubbed perfect but I stopped watching within minutes'

I tried to watch a new war drama that everyone has been talking about, but I soon had to switch off. The reason I couldn't see it through may surprise a lot of people With so many choices available, it can be hard to decide what to watch on TV nowadays - after all, there are so many different streaming services and channels to choose from. Even so, every now and then we look for something different to really get our teeth into. ‌ I haven't watched a war drama for quite some time but one had grabbed my attention, as so many people had been talking about it. The Narrow Road to the Deep North has recently made its way onto BBC iPlayer and the Australian drama miniseries, which is based on the novel of the same name by Richard Flanagan, stars Jacob Elordi, Odessa Young and Ciarán Hinds. Since its release, it's been labelled "magnificent" in reviews I've read; however, I personally had some issues trying to watch it. ‌ The series, which was initially released on Amazon Prime back in April, focuses on the character of Dorrigo Evans across three periods - the time before his deployment to the Second World War, during his time as a Far East prisoner of war and years after the war too, and it's said to be a truly captivating tale. ‌ Not to mention, a love affair also features in the narrative. Being intrigued by the plot, and being a big fan of Elordi, I tuned in hoping it would become my latest TV addiction, but I couldn't make it past a few minutes in. While I have no doubt the show is gripping in many ways, I just couldn't bring myself to watch it. I'll admit the reason why left me a little surprised. ‌ A few minutes into the show, bombs started to drop, which is naturally expected when you're watching a war series; however, it wasn't until I tuned in that I realised I couldn't watch anything about war for the time being. As much as I wanted to stick with it, I couldn't, as I quickly learnt it left me feeling triggered and upset. Perhaps it's because I work in the world of news, or perhaps it's because I watch too much news, but I soon realised war wasn't something I could watch played out on my screen. All of a sudden it hit me that there's been so much conflict in the world in recent years that I'm not quite in the right mindset to dive back into WW2. Though I don't shy away from the news, in my downtime, it seems as though I do need to stay away from such horrific stories. ‌ It made me wonder if we are all seeking a bit of TV "fluff" lately or, at least, something a little lighter, funnier or simply less sad. As much as I wish I could watch The Narrow Road to the Deep North and see what all the fuss is about, I feel like some of us are just craving something different when it comes to TV at the moment. In time, I'm sure this feeling will pass, and I'll be able to watch these historic tales again. But, for now, I just feel like I need something comforting and less violent as I had to switch off within minutes. Despite me being unable to tune in, the show has received rave reviews from fans on social media. My inability to see it through perhaps says nothing about how good it is. ‌ One person said: "Wow... there has never been many shows or movies I've watched and thought at the end 'that was perfect'. Honestly five stars in my books. "Visually stunning, amazing acting - it pulled at your heart and you really truly felt everything. The trauma, pain and love. It was dark and beautiful. That was worth every minute of my time." Another added: "It was a profoundly moving but dark series. As one that had not read the book before watching it, I found the love affair to be nuanced and tragic. "The scenes of torture and beatings were horrific to watch. But to me, the ending was gut wrenching." One more also wrote: "Just finished watching this series, and I'm in awe of the storytelling, the cinematography and the music. Truly depressing through and through until the bitter end, but will definitely stick with me for some time."
