A novice driver who caused a 'catastrophic' crash on the A1 near Newcastle has been given 14 months' detention.
Mazyar Azarbonyad, 20, caused a huge crash on the A1 when he suddenly braked at 120mph, which left seven police officers injured, while taking a woman home from their first date.
The personal trainer sped away in his powerful BMW SUV after cops spotted him driving over the speed limit and with defective rear lights in the early hours of April 9.
Police cars were left mangled on the dual carriageway when the officers chased Mazyar down the road.
One officer was left with nerve damage to her back and soft tissue damage to her knee, while another officer needed stitches on his forehead after a cut.
Mazyar had bought the car on finance although he only had a provisional licence, no insurance, and he later admitted having paid for only three driving lessons.
It was a 'miracle' that no one died or was injured more seriously, Judge Tim Gittins said during sentencing at Newcastle Crown Court today.
Mazyar, who moved to the UK after fleeing Iran when he was 14, was given 14 months' detention in a young offenders' institution.
The judge said: 'You should have been nowhere near the driving seat of any vehicle that night, let alone one such as a BMW X5, a large and powerful SUV.
'It is nothing short of a miracle that no one was more seriously injured or that there were not multiple fatalities.'
Mazyar was driving his date, Courtney Redfern, home in the SUV after the pair's first date.
To make matters worse, the personal trainer was back behind the wheel just two days after the crash as he drove to get to work at a gym in Newcastle on April 11, 12 and 13.
He had been stopped for driving without a licence and insurance in 2023.
He admitted several driving offences, including driving without insurance multiple times, even after the crash and failing to stop.
On the night of the horrific crash, he had first pulled over, but when an officer approached on foot, he said 'nah' and sped away, his passenger, Courtney, said.
The driver's defence said that Mazyar had claimed Courtney told him she had drugs on her and he 'panicked.'
Judge Gittins said: 'Whether or not you were made aware of the small amount of cannabis in her possession, I am satisfied you made a deliberate decision to make off substantially because of your unlawful driving position.' More Trending
Jolyon Perks, prosecuting, said Courtney told him to stop several times and she thought he 'could have killed someone.'
He was going at 119mph when he suddenly braked harshly in the middle of the carriageway, causing the pursuing officers to crash, the court heard.
The prosecutor said: 'A number of these officers were trapped in vehicles. There were liquids involved, thankfully not petrol. A number of officers were rendered unconscious. It was clearly a very traumatic incident.'

Tourist restrains influencer after ‘cruel' Apple Pay prank plagues Londoners

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Tiktokers who think they are funny are pranking London commuters with fake Apple Pay payments, but victims are quite literally fighting back. The viral trend sees Tiktokers play the Apple Pay 'ding' sound next to a stranger's phone, saying 'thank you' and walking away. This leaves the victim of the prank thinking they have had money taken from them. One influencer, F Boogie, walked up to a tourist on the River Thames and pretended to take £1,000 from them. But the tourist, enraged at the thought he had so much money taken from him, physically restrained the Tiktoker. A plainclothed police officer then arrived at the scene, and handcuffed F Boogie who shouts: 'Oh my hand bruv, my hand, you've f***ed up my hand.' The prank does not cause any financial or physical harm, but it can leave victim's distressed and confused. Users who are choosing to pull the prank on someone, pretend to make a contactless payment with their phone against someone else's. The prank is complete with the classic Apple Pay 'ding' and a a graphic on the user's phone signifying payment has been complete. Pranksters tend to say 'thank you' at the end to really ham home the act and get a reaction out of their victim. Some commenters beneath the videos have said it is cruel, and is only being done for Tiktok hits. Londoners will be pleased to know that money can never be taken from them from someone else's phone. Apple Pay requires authorization and a payment terminal. So phones are unable to transfer funds just by touching. Metro has contacted the Met Police for comment. Soldier who raped stranger in 'harrowing' street attack jailed for nine years

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A soldier who tried to hide in a railway station cubicle after raping a stranger in a doorway in a 'harrowing' attack has been jailed for nine years. Private John Harvey, 25, initially gave police a full confession after accosting and attacking the young woman as she walked through Shrewsbury town centre. But he then forced her to 'relive the worst moment of my life' by pleading not guilty and making her give evidence at his nine-day trial. In a victim impact statement read at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, the woman, who cannot be identified, said her 20-minute ordeal had left her with post-traumatic disorder. She said: 'My home has become the only place I feel calm. The offender has convinced me terrible people who can do terrible things are everywhere. 'I was forced to endure rape. The offender also forced me to fight my corner in a trial. I was forced by him to relive the worst moment of my life repeatedly. 'This event from the beginning to the end is the worst and hardest thing I have ever had to endure.' Harvey, of Clive Barracks in Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, Shropshire, was found guilty of two counts of rape and one of assault by penetration. Judge Richard McConaghy told him the offence was aggravated by the fact he was drunk and the 'vulnerable' woman was walking alone at night. He told Harvey: 'She walked away and rang 999, audio of that call in the state that she was in is harrowing to listen to.' The court heard Harvey, who had missed his last train, went back towards the woman after the sexual assaults, but was 'put off' as she was on the phone to police, and went instead to Shrewsbury railway station. Video released by West Mercia Police after Harvey was jailed showed him being arrested by officers at the station at 6.32am in July last year. The video clip shows officers ordering Harvey to open the cubicle and then handcuffing him before he provided his name. Harvey, who was also ordered to serve an extended three-year period on licence after his eventual release, was said by the judge to be an 'educated man with a degree' and to have had a 'respectable career' at the time of the attack. The judge told Harvey, who is now working as a prison cleaner and training as a mentor: 'You co-operated on arrest and made full admissions to having raped her. 'You however chose to throw that mitigation away by contesting the trial in the face of very strong evidence and made her give evidence despite your own confession of what you had done.' After the sentencing, Detective Constable Sam Jones said Harvey 'is a danger to the wider public, in particular, women'. More Trending The officer added: 'In July last year Harvey committed a purely evil crime, and despite admitting to the offences during a police interview when he was arrested, he then changed his story at court, subjecting his victim and her loved ones to sit through a trial and relive that awful night.' No details of Harvey's military service or his employment by the Army were disclosed at his sentencing hearing. Clive Barracks is the long-term home of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment. In a statement which did not confirm details of Harvey's unit, an Army spokesperson said: 'We can confirm that Private John Harvey appeared for sentencing at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on June 5, 2025, convicted of a sexual offence. He was sentenced to nine years imprisonment.' Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ For more stories like this, check our news page.
