Abbott Elementary's Quinta Brunson breaks silence on divorce as she addresses 'major change' in life

Perth Now30-06-2025
Quinta Brunson has insisted that she "didn't announce" her divorce.
The 35-year-old actress married Kevin Jay Anik in 2022, and it emerged via public records earlier this year that she had filed for divorce but she has insisted that no one famous actually wants others to know when something happens in their personal life.
She told Bustle: 'I remember seeing people be like, 'She announced her divorce.'
"I didn't announce anything. I think people have this idea that people in the public eye want the public to know their every move. None of us do. I promise you. No one wants [everyone] to know when you buy a house, when you move, when a major change happens in your personal life. It's just that that's public record information.'
The Abbott Elementary star initially felt the need to present herself in a "certain way" once she found success with her Emmy Award-winning TV series and felt pressure to avoid doing things like changing her appearance, but then found it "very liberating" to stop thinking like that.
She said: "When Abbott started, it felt like, 'OK, I'm quite public now, and I'm responsible for so many people. I need to be consistent. I need to show up a certain way. I need to be reliable.
"I got it in my head that that's a bad sign
"You can't cut your hair, you can't pierce your nose, you can't get a tattoo. It's going to give, 'You don't know who you are.'
"Those are invisible voices that aren't in your home with you, that aren't in your personal life, that aren't your friends.
'I love my fans, I love the people who watch Abbott. So you want to hear them, and you want to listen to them, but when it comes to matters of your personal life and decisions you make, you do have to tune it out.
"When I finally cut it off, there was something very liberating about it.
"You can still change and evolve and start over. Cutting my hair helped remind me that I am an artist first. I want to feel things. I want to do things. I want to make choices. I want to be a person, and not just stuck in having to be a certain way for business."

Denzel Washington wishes he had 'prayed more'

Denzel Washington wishes he'd been more active in his faith when he was younger. The 70-year-old actor - who was baptised and obtained a minister license last year - has enjoyed a long and successful career and the only advice he has to offer his younger self is to have been more in contact with God. Asked the advice he'd give a younger Denzel, he told Extra: 'Pray more. That's it. Pray more. That's what I would tell that younger Denzel Washington. Pray more. Get on your knees more.' The Oscar-winning star is currently promoting his new film Highest 2 Lowest - in which he plays a music mogul who is targeted in a ransom plot - and the movie marks his fifth collaboration with Spike Lee, which is always comfortable. He said: 'I don't want to say, 'Just like old times,' but you know, you're back in the saddle. 'He leaves me alone. I don't know what he's doing. And he put together a great team of actors… Wendell [Pierce] and Jeffrey and Michael Potts and myself, and then the young buck A$AP [Rocky], and just let it rip.' Denzel was baptised in a special ceremony at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ, in New York City's Harlem neighbourhood just a few days before last Christmas. According to New York Post column PageSix, Archbishop Christopher Bryant revealed Denzel said: "In one week I turn 70. It took a while but I'm here. If [God] can do this for me, there's nothing He can't do for you. The sky literally is the limit." The actor's wife Pauletta Washington - with whom he has four adult children - also spoke of her pride in her husband's spiritual achievements, saying: "Forty-six years later, here I'm still standing next to him as only God will have it. "So, I'm very proud of you. You are the head of our house and you have set a great example for our children, who are now adult children who know the difference because we have shown them the difference." After the ceremony, Denzel posed for a picture holding his certificate of baptism and his minister licence - which will allow him to be ordained in the future. The Training Day star previously opened up about his faith in a recent interview with Esquire magazine, admitting he believes it's not "fashionable" to talk about religion in Hollywood. He said: "When you see me, you see the best I could do with what I've been given by my lord and saviour. I'm unafraid. "I don't care what anyone thinks. See, talking about the fear part of it - you can't talk like that and win Oscars. You can't talk like that and party. You can't say that in this town. "I'm free now. It's not talked about in this town. It's not talked about. It's not talked about. It's not fashionable. It's not sexy. But that doesn't mean people in Hollywood don't believe."

'That's leader behaviour': Former PM spotted taking on a surprising job

Drivers in a busy Sydney car park were surprised to find an unusual guide for exiting traffic - former prime minister Tony Abbott. Mr Abbott was filmed holding the boom gate of an underground car park open with one hand as he waved cars through with the other. The Pitt Street car park was reportedly battling congestion when the former PM decided to assist. It is unclear when the footage was filmed, but since was shared to the Instagram account Humans of Eastwood Daily, it quickly garnered thousands of likes and comments. "From budgie smuggler to car smuggler, a man of many talents," one person replied. Another said she was impressed, "that's leader behaviour". "He was always a worker. Bushfire CFA volunteer, surf lifesaver, he did a lot more civil service than most pollies," said another. Mr Abbott is well known for jumping in at times of crisis, in a personal capacity, including volunteering with the NSW Rural Fire Service. During the Black Summer bushfires he was seen working to save homes. Despite the good deed, others could not look past the 28th prime minister's other endeavours. "Remember the time he ate an onion," one quipped. Another said it was the "best thing Tony Abbott's done". Dame Helen Mirren stuns Pierce Brosnan, Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show audience with unexpected 'tomatoes are bisexual' revelation

Dame Helen Mirren has delivered a surprise botany lesson that sent The Tonight Show audience into fits of laughter. The 80-year-old British acting legend, appearing alongside her Thursday Murder Club co-star Pierce Brosnan, shared her newfound tomato knowledge while host Jimmy Fallon made salsa from his homegrown produce. "Incidentally, I just want to give you a tip about growing tomatoes," she told Fallon during the live show on Tuesday evening. "You know the little flower? Well, a good way to get a tomato out of a flower is you have to tremble the flower like this," she added, bending a finger and wiggling it in demonstration. "Did you know that?" Fallon instantly burst into laughter, urging her to "stop doing that" and insisting, "I'm not doing that- at all- to my tomatoes!" "You've got to. A tomato is a bisexual thing, you see," Mirren replied, doubling down with, "Well, it is!" prompting more laughter from Fallon, Brosnan and the audience. "I looked it up very recently because I had a problem with my tomatoes. "It's bisexual, so you have to go around to each tomato, each flower, and go like this," she added, repeating the hand motion. After asking Fallon if she could smell the tomato, Mirren took a sniff and responded to Brosnan's query about its bouquet with a blunt: "Not really." When Fallon prepared to slice the tomato for salsa, the Academy Award-winning actress hid her face, exclaiming, "Ahhhh! How can you be so cruel? I'm amazed." She later declared the salsa "really fabulous", saying "Demi died a noble death" in apparent reference to the tomato. Shortly after the live interview aired, fans flooded social media with praise for the bit. "Love British humour, Helen is hilarious!" one wrote, while another said: "Everything about this interview was perfection." Others commented on the pair's enduring charm, while a handful felt the segment "missed the mark". Regardless of fans' opinions about the interview, Mirren's research appears accurate. According to Seed Collection Australia, tomato flowers are indeed bisexual, as they contain both male and female reproductive parts. Mirren, a celebrated actress with a career spanning over six decades, was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2003. Her accolades include an Academy Award, five Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, four BAFTA Awards, and a Laurence Olivier Award. One can only assume that her fruit and vegetable garden is equally as impressive.
